Assuming you have two EA's in play, would you split the damage done to you between the two or would you be dealing the same damage to both of them

I think all goes to one of them of your choice. After "all damage" was dealt to one of the angels, there's no more for the other one. And I don't think you can split.

I'm pretty sure if you take 8 damage, both Archangels are killed. The damage to EA is individually considered. Nice card tho, I drafted a Foil :D

★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0)(2 votes)
actually, damage is considered individually. basically you deal any damage done to you do one of them, you couldn't split the damage unless you split it for different sourses. it's the same thing with a few of the other creatures out there who have simular effects

Since the Angel has shroud, you can't target it with most damage prevention effects, so can you prevent damage that would be done to you before it's redirected to the Angel?

This card with Reya Dawnbringer is pretty much good game if your opponent can't get rid of reya or if you have good chunks of reanimator spells *cough* Recurring Nightmare *cough* then she pretty much comes in and out.

pretty much anything with deathtouch would be the only way to get rid of this card.

You would not split the damage taken from creatures in combat. The combined damage done by all creatures resolves as a single object on the stack (310.1; 310.4).
If you have two EA's in play you would only choose one of them for each instance of damage occurring, and you get to decide which one (419.1a; 419.6c; 419.9a).
Deathtouch most certainly would kill the angel, since this redirection effect doesn't change the source of the damage.

I thought this would work but my friend thinks it won't heck i'm kinda questioning it, I have Mark of Asylum out plus EA now if someone initiates combat and i let the damage come through and then its redirected to me is it still considered combat damage or just regular damage redirected towards the angel because the combat was to me this is assuming that EA doesn't block the creature or anything will Mark of Asylum prevent that damage from being dealt because i think its non-combat damage because the combat is to me not EA but the damage is just redirected to the Angel, question is would Mark of Asylum prevent the damage or not? Please explain why if you can to clear this matter up.

? ? ? ? Why is everyone discussing how damage is dealt when all of you should be talking about the positive and negative aspects of the card? If your unsure of how the EA's ability then look in a rule book or consult a rule-guru! Almost every previous comment here is wasted on senseless talk about the way the mechanic works.
As for what I think of the card, here's what I have to say: epic yet expensive. At such a high a cost EA is restricted to control (and possibly combo) decks only. Although combo and control decks usually will have an entire board set up by turn eight, ensuring that the EA is utilized to its full potential. What I mean by this is that, by the time EA is casted, you don't want it as the only card that you have in play. In such a case your archangel would be subject to lethal damage from the opponents creatures and spells, so rather it would be logical to have several enchantments and creature in play first. Of course, I would imagine that most players would! At its best (when combined with other cards) EA can act as an invincible shield to your opponents offensive maneuvers. As for its downside, well, pretty much its cost is really high and shroud prevents you from enchanting it (although troll shroud probably would have been too good). Despite a few minor flaws, EA is just shy of a perfect card; a large creature that appeals to Timmy's, a combo potential that interests Johnney's, and a game winner that catches the eye of Spike's.

I love everything about this card, except it's 8 mana cost. You wouldn't be able to play it until so late in the game it probably wouldn't make a difference anymore. On the other hand, it has the shroud and 8 toughness like a wall of denial, while still being able to take damage for you directly. It has shroud, so you wont just play it and it will get killed by a doomblade, and obviously crazy combos like vigor are awesome here. Mayael's aria wouldn't hurt either, with 2 of the same colors, and making the empyrial archangel grow bigger every turn simply for being in play. Sure, if you mana accel into her using green you could maybe have her out turn 5 or 6, but if you draw her in your first hand and no major mana accel, then you can treat it as an unplayable card. Since you can get nearly similiar effects from having a lower mana creature you can enchant like uril mistalker and a shield of the oversoul, it's not reasonable to suggest that the angel would help win the game by that late. Having pointed that out, if you have to pick one of the eight mana "lords" of each shard, it's hard to go wrong with this one, it's a tie between empyrial archangel and the sphinx of the steel wind in my book, with sphinx of the steel wind being much more epic, but not quite as protected from removal.

The EA produce a shield in front of you. If you have 2 AE you have 2 shields. You choose in what order they interact. So basically your opponent attack you for 8, you choose that your AE1 shield take the damage first. Then if there is any damage left you can choose (well you have too since there is no MAY) redire t them to the second angel. But since the ability take ALL damage the second shield cannot be used, unless there is multiple sources of damages.

I think this card is under-rated
I have 4x wall of denials in my deck, 1x Iona and 2x EA
I have manaproduction and a few summoning traps plus a few creature removals
Deathtouch creatures are its weakness yes but wall of denials stop the power of your opponents big creatures and its usually decks with a lot of creatures a lot of the time are mono coloured. With so much protection you are normally still in the game long enough to cast Iona or if your lucky hit it with a summoning trap.
Its also great if your opponent doesnt have many creatures to drop a luminarch ascension which then basically reads.. if you cant deal 8 damage to your opponent for 3 turns you get 4/4 angels for 1W
On its own this card isnt great but put in a deck with the right cards..it can be great
4/5
Also on another note - mark of asylm - the damage it still classed as combat as it redirects the damage and doesnt change the type. Combat damage to player = combat damage to EA

I see it going hand-in-hand with Bant's friendly-neighborhood planeswalker, and Gilder Bairn. Start up your mana-production with Zendikar's mana-ramp, play Gilder the next turn, something else to keep your opponent occupied, next turn,Elspeth the Knight Errant, Swing with Gilder, untap him Elspeth's ultimate during the 2nd mainphase after GB attacks, drop Empyrial Archangel. Also, it goes extremely well with Sudden Spoiling for equipment, Replenish for Enchantments. Can you say a 15-18 with trample? I love Eldrazi Con***ion. Anyone have any tips for getting enchantments in the graveyard?

It is a fairly pricy card, but I would say you're getting what you paid for and if you have some angel's herald's you can get this card out before you get the 8 land to pay his mana cost. You might be able to get it out on your forth turn if you build your deck right.

Due to it having shroud, you'd have to combo it with something like Elspeth, Knight-Errant. Otherwise, it's only going to function for you as a twice-powerful Force Bubble.
If you're looking for a card that does what this does, and isn't this card, go for Pariah and things like Indestructibility, Heart of Light, or protection from X (protection from creatures is a nice choice to avoid color problems).

Aura Graft gets past Shroud (it doesn't target, and Shroud only protects against targeting, it doesn't affect enchantments that somehow got slapped on the creature (unlike Protection from X)), so you could use that to slap an Indestructibility on it. But for all that mana, Platinum Angel is just better.

It would actually be worth using without its second ability, because this will just get killed if you take 8 damage, and with all the direct damage going around, its going to be easy at 8 mana. It should at least give exalted or something like "Permanents with exalted you control have exalted (This ability stacks)" because that's a game ending ability, like the others of its cycle except Sphinx Sovereign (Which will probably kill somebody at that point in the game anyways.)

Chances are you're already running {W} and {U} if you're using Empyrial Archangel. So why not use something like Sovereigns of Lost Alara or Glamer Spinners to put Indestructibility onto EA? Or Eldrazi Monument? You'd have a nigh-unkillable creature that takes all the damage you'd be taking otherwise, so all you have to worry about is "Lose life" effects.

@Sorrensen: To your first question: No, with an exception. Questions like this can easily be answered by going to the rulebook (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/rules) and simply looking it up. Rule 702.6, appropriately labeled Equip, gives the reminder text for Equip: "Attach this Equipment to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.'" And Shroud tells us that the creature cannot be targeted. So no, she's stuck how she is, unless you use Quest for the Holy Relic or Stonehwer Giant, which put, which doesn't involve targeting, so they would work.
Second question: Even if you went through all that trouble to put Sword of Kaldra on her, she would be indestructible, but Infect and anything that says all creatures get -8/-8 (such as with Mutliate when your opponent has 8 or more swamps), as anything that says all creatures and infect don't target and would kill her by giving her 0 or less toughness.
So is all that worth it when you could follow nammertime's advice and use Vigor, which would help all of your other creatures as well? I don't think so.

Errr... I'm pretty sure Deathtouch doesn't kill it if it takes the damage after it has been shelled out and dealt to the player first (since the state is checked before the damage is assigned to the player. Empyrial Archangel is not blocking the creature, and deathtouch has no effect the player, so the damage is assigned normally to the Archangel in the same way that it would take Infect damage as normal damage because it would become poison counters on a player, but it's state is as damage against a player, rather than -1/-1 counters on the Archangel. The source hasn't changed, but the damage is all funneled in together as ususal before being deat to the player, and then assigned to Empyreal Archangel, meaning that the state-check has already occured.
Infect gives her -1/-1, and no poison counters to you, deathtouch will also kill her (if it has any power, most deathtouchers do) for the same reason.
Her ability says "instead" which is a replacement effect, its like saying, if you would tap a land for mana, you get double instead, you never add one mana to your pool, you add two. She is the same way, if you would get hurt, she does instead, you never get hit, she does (unless she dies).
Deathtouch states, any damage dealt by this creature is lethal, the creature is inflicting damage to Archangel, so she dies.
Infect says, deals it to players as poison counters and to creatures as -1/-1 counters. The damage never hits you, it just hits her, which gives her -1/-1 counters. The effect is static, its not like you can stack on it, and get it to change targets (you can't almost take infect poison and redirect it to a creature, and have that creature take poison counters, it will be -1/-1 counters)

This is a pretty good card, but what I really like is the art! I could never imagine an angel in any color but white (or maybe Fallen Angel in black), and I was really surprised to see one in blue and green. However, I think that the art not only captures the essence of Bant (majestic, honor based), but also of blue and green (the cool tones of blue and green, along with an emphasis on Fog (no pun intended) and the sky/nature). Overall, this is a great card, especially because of the shroud!

Comprehensive Rules 616.1: "If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object's controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply"
So you get to choose which one takes the damage.
