Found a slot for him in my Karador tool box EDH deck. Felt good tutoring up a Lord of Extinction, casting it, and sacrificing it to Jarad. My playgroup hated it.

Highly entertaining in The Mimeoplasm, Karador, Ghost Chieftain, and similar decks. Could even make a strong Voltron/Dredge Commander on his own. As he is, he' s a legendary, harder-to-pay for Lhurgoyf with a couple extra abilities, would be much scarier if he counted all cards in all graveyards.

Right so if ALL you do is don't read or play Magic AT ALL, and you just try to make a Zombie-Elf Tribal Deck based PURELY on the strategies of White Weenies with Green and Black faces, then you will accidentally end up with stupidly synergistic ABILITIES between your cards, FORGET the P/T because that's just how Black-Green works so well together. This guy is absolutely amazing and will be a bomb in both limited and constructed. At first I thought that he only partially comboed with scavenge because when you scavenge, you exile, but, because I am a pro, I quickly realized that you can scavenge and put the counters on top of him!
This guy has a lot of synergy with stuff in his own guild, but it is still questionable to use him, even in sealed/draft. Sure you can get in a lot of damage, but you have to lose a card to do it. Then again, Jarad will get himself stronger once your own dude hits the graveyard. But once Jarad bites the dust you just put all that gamble to waste (unless your willing to sacrificing 2 lands). I really don't know about this guy =/
Might be good as a general because you will have more bombs and Jarad deals damage to each opponent with his ability. Sacrificing a guy with 6 power among 5 opponents is 30 damage for only 3 mana. Still, kind of iffy since each opponent only takes 6 and you lost your great creature =/ I personally wouldn't use this guy ever.

This guy has tools as a Commander The Mimeoplasm and Karador, Ghost Chieftain only wish they had. His second ability wins games, period. Sure you can potentially do Mimeoplasm and Triskelion, but that requires an arbitrarily large creature in a graveyard (like a Lord of Extinction) plus the Triskelion. Just sac a Lord of Extinction to this guy and odds are you've killed most of the people at the table, and if not they are likely very close to dead. In the event someone gets out of hand with Lifegain he's still able to get quite large and get in for 21 commander damage.
Jarad is my commander and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Haters gonna hate.
Clearly underestimated. He's a direct damage spell on a stick, a sac outlet and a regenerating lhurgoyf. He's a good finisher in limited, I anticipate him having a run in constructed, and he is screaming out for a EDH deck. 5/5, hands down.

Um, this isn't a reprint... Jarad was a preview card in the dual deck - he was always intended to be in this set, but anyone who bought that deck got to use him early.
Anyway, he's a great card and clearly designed for Commander. Powerful, fun, and yet not overwhelming or boring in some non-interactive way.

Unless you scavenge onto Jarad himself, he kind of has antisynergy with his own guild's theme. Then again none of the guild leaders really have good synergy with their keyword minus Trostani and maybe Isperia, Supreme Judge

He's not totally busted and the art isn't amazing, but I still think he's a pretty cool and interestingly designed card. Obligatory good in EDH comment....maybe not as a commander though.

Takes a while to set up, but once you have 3-4 critters in the 'yard and a bunch of lands, this guy is unstoppable. In my first RTR draft, I lost to this guy because I couldn't figure out how to deal with him. (As it turns out, Rakdos's weakness is not having Arrest or Exile or Detain...)

I built a pretty fun Commander deck using him. It is a Black Green reanimator dredge style deck. It works very well. Most the time Jarad isn't that good in the early game because of how few creatures are in your graveyard at the time. But once the game starts to drag on a bit longer he becomes a powerful force. Usually I don't win using him, but rather the large creatures I reanimate. But when that strategy fails, Jarad is ready to beat people over the head for 20+ damage. I know Graveyard hate ruins the deck pretty hard, but the people I play with don't run graveyard hate that often.
I have / had (it's in limbo) a kresh edh deck that used red to grab my oppnents creatures, and then other sac engines like birthing pod, and altar of dementia once I had them. It was a good idea but needed work, I think this is a great help for that deck.

I was playing a three-way game of Commander earlier today. I was using Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord in particular. I had a Mossbridge Troll out, with plenty of Zombie tokens from a Grave Titan, pumped it up to a 45/45, and sacrificed it to Jarad...
Both Opponents took 45 life and died. Brought a tear to my eye...

I ran this guy in sealed, and he was a BRICK HOUSE. His second ability was instrumental, and late game, I had no problem floating mana and sac'ing lands to bring his straight back to the field for round 2. It helped if I had my Deathrite Shaman out to make use of the sac'ed lands. In constructed, he can be mediocre...unless he's in the right environment. In a BGx Frites deck, he could be incredible. Especially since unlike Splinterfright or Boneyard Wurm, he doesn't die completely with your graveyard should Rakdos Charm or Tormod's Crypt come a-knockin'. I can dig this guy.

@hedronMatrix, Unfortunately Worldspine Wurm's second ability would trigger, so would be shuffled back into the library before the undying effect from Mikaeus, the Unhallowed brought it back on to the battlefield. Creatures always go to the graveyard when they die. Something like Ghoultree would be better friends with Jarad and Mik :) Someone correct me if I happen to be wrong.

So much bad information in here, at least, IMO.
-He does not combo well with scavenge: They rely on the same resource. -He does not combo well with Red steal effects: A third color with 4 color weight is a death sentence to reliability; further, it doesn't help him at all since he relies on creatures in your grave.
Anyway, obviously he's great with dredge. -Consider (as general advice) Riftstone Portal to help achieve a reliable mana-base. -Consider evoke creatures, Specifically shriekmaw and briarhorn. -Despite the anti-synergy, consider things like Ichorid (he can also be resusably-sacced for a consistent 3 life-loss on top of the 3 attack) -Very handsome synergy with Golgari Grave-Troll and Lord of Extinction. In multiplayer you'll probably 1-hit a guy on the attack, then 1-hit another guy on the sac. -Because of the huge effects, consider fast reanimators (instant speed) like necromancy and shallow grave

I'd disagree on the notion that he doesn't synergise well with scavenge. For one, it'd be a misnomer to think that the guild leader wouldn't work well their mechanic (save perhaps Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius). Secondly, he puts stuff directly into the graveyard for you to scavenge. The fact that decreases his overall toughness is largely irrelevant when he's evasively draining life from your opponents.
That said, there are no doubt good combinations you can employ with him that don't use scavenge. Imagine using Lotleth Troll to discard Rot Farm Skeleton, then later on returning him to the battlefield and sacrificing him to Jarad. Rinse and repeat.
I feel like Golgari is going to make a comeback when M13 and Innistrad roll out, since it seems a good portion of graveyard hate will hopefully go with it. I'll definitely be giving it a go.

I really do love this card. In a Golgari deck with Scavenge cards, you can pile on +1/+1 counters on, say, a Corpsejack Menace, and then just sacrifice it and throw 20 damage in your opponent's face. The fact that he loses some stats if you scavenge your creatures is irrelevant if your opponent is dead.

Okay so what do you guys think of this:
You start the match first-
Turn 1: Elvish Mystic Turn 2: Lotleth Troll, discard and scavenge a Slitherhead Turn 3: Jarad Golgari Lich Lord, discard and scavenge another Slitherhead, swing for 6 Turn 4: Dying Wish on Lotleth troll, swing with Lotleth for 6 (And maybe Jarad for 2?), sac lotleth with Jarad's ability to deal an extra 12 damage and gain 6 life.
You go second in the match-
Turn 1: Elvish Mystic Turn 2: Lotleth Troll, discard and scavenge a Slitherhead, Enchant with Forced Adaptation or use a Blessing of Nature or any counter buff that costs 1 green Turn 3: Jarad Golgari Lich Lord, Discard and Scavenge another Slitherhead on Lotleth, swing (and maybe with Jarad as well for 2?) Turn 4: Dying Wish on Lotleth, Swing for 8, Sac Lotleth with Jarad's ability to deal an extra 16 damage while gaining 8 life and thus most likely killing them. (Used Forced Adaptation as an example as the turn 2 extra counter source so your overall damage may be even higher)
So if you start first you're quicker and safer from dying, but do less damage.
If you start second then you're slower and a lot less safe from damage or spells, but you'll do a lot more damage as well.

I can't believe no-one has realised that it is not he himself that has the synergy with scavenge. It is who he sacrifices. I just wiped out 5 players in one turn with Corpsejack menace out, scavenged a dreg mangler onto a 6/6 vastwood hydra to make him 12/12, sac'd him to jarad, put his 12 counters on a 4/4 feral hydra to make him a 28/28, sac'd to jarad. 28+12=40 whole table dead. Boom! Even the judge was like wtf just happened?!

I don't have a EDH deck yet, but I may just have to build one. Lots of combos mentioned already, but I'm thinking he would work well with Pattern of Rebirth, Defense of the Heart and Garruk, Caller of Beasts to dig out the fatties and get them into play (including Worldspine Wurm, any Eldrazi (except Emrakul, who is not EDH playable) or anybody else with the right colors). And if you could throw down a Lifeline to go along with those, you could just keep lobbing fatties at your opponents all day. Not that it would take more than a couple of turns to kill them all at that rate, of course.
And on a side note, I tend to agree with spiney about the scavenge thing. Removing a creature from the graveyard reduces Jared's toughness, but you can place the +1/+1 counters on him to more than make up for the difference. Pairing Jared with someone like Varolz just seems brilliant to me. Jared throws the fatties for damage and Varolz cuts them up for dinner afterward. It's a win-win situation. Unless you're the opposing player, of course, in which case you're unlikely to win once this setup gets going.
He's only really good in standard; in almost any other format, it's worth it to have a couple Essence Harvests instead.

@ spiney please look up what the word 'misnomer' means, and what do you mean by 'evasively' draining life? That adverb doesn't make sense in that context at all. You were right about Golgari getting better, though. I'm thinking of building Ravnica themed EDH, now, and I'm stuck between using Varolz or Jarad as my commander.
