Both effects are highly useful. +4 is nice, especially with double strike or another buff. The detach is great for spell like lightning helix or whatever other instants that might be hiding in your library.

As maxim said, lightning helix is obviously one of the best uses for this card, you get to search your deck repetitivley for all of them and use them. There are plenty of other choices as well, combo with balefire liege to do a consistent 6 damage 6 life gain a turn.

Hahah, thought of a nifty combo with this: Get up to six mana, dropping some overpowered boros creature like Hearthfire Hobgoblin, and this, and then equip, with three mana up, and then on your opponent's upkeep, use the equipment's ability, grab an Orim's Chant and kick it. And repeat this for the next four turns, an since you're attacking with a 6/2 dbl strike, they'd have to be pretty lucky to live.

This one also grabs Boros Fury-Shield, Mortify, Wrecking Ball, split cards, counterspells with red or white in the cost, and most tri color charms from Alara. Versatility at its best in terms of equipment. The drawback, of course, is the cost to repeated use the ability and re-equip.

Sunforger is nothing to sneeze at, especially not when paired with Boros Swiftblade or other double strikers.

People, You are missing the point here. The real way to use it is...
Opponent: I cast "insert threatening game changeing card here".
You: I unattach sunforger. Double Negative.
Opponent: I Scoop.
Such a fun card. Not many equipment give you such a unique ability AND a useful pump (+4/+0). It really works best when your deck is constructed to work with or without it. That way you don't run into games where you're just waiting for Sunforger so you can get started. When you do have it equipped it's a total cannon. You can do so many things with it it's just absurd. Some of my favorites to run with it are: Return to Dust, Ghostway, Wild Ricochet (Mentioned also by RedRapist), Debt of Loyalty, Dawn Charm, Retaliate, Final Fortune, Ancient Grudge. Anyways, lots of fun. Makes me worry whenever my opponent drops it into play.
The +4/+0 in itself is not to be underestimated. The only other equipment(Vulshok Gauntlets) that parallels it has a hefty drawback. If what you need is raw power, this is the best you can get.
Of course in most situations Loxodon Warhammer would be better, but I still might get one of these to throw into my equipment deck.
And I also love that it IS a volcanic hammer. Art-wise, I mean.
EDIT: Okay, what with Ogre's Cleaver and Argentum Armor, that's no longer as true. But this IS only three to equip, to that five and six.

I built a casual deck around this, using auriok steelshaper, leonin shikari, Kor duelist, paradise mantle, Thousand-year elixir, wheel of sun and moon, to arms, and an eclectic mix of tri-color charms (all of them include either red or white). Rith's charm to toss out saprolings, equip each of them in turn with paradise mantle and tap them for mana, equip sunforger, cast another rith's charm, equip all of those saprolings, equip sunforger, cast to arms from my deck, untap all of my creatures. A stupidly long-winded combo that lets me cast any of the charms infinitely. Even without the full combo the deck manages to cast the charms fairly easily, and the creatures are all white, so it's a little easier to maintain a defense. Not amazing one on one, but very entertaining in multiplayer.
I love sunforger, Found it can work well with odds and ends, if its in your deck you have counter/copy, if its in your hand you can force them to sac creatures.
to those of you pointing out the high cost stuff like searing winds and whatnot, may i point out "Converted mana cost of 4 or less"

I love this because it's basically Thor's Hammer Mjolnir as a magic card. You throw it and it shoots lightning bolts!

blugm: I almost hate to say it, but Sunforger says "CMC 4 or less". Nine is higher than four, thus, Searing Wind is useless.

Another poor (but awesome) card to get kicked in the groin by M10 rules. Not nearly as bad as some others, but still, stacking the +4 damage then to throw in a surprise Lightning Helix was sweet.
Definitely a candidate for mythic rarity. This kind of repeatable tutor effect opens up way too many possibilities, it's a one card toolbox that's limited only by the cards in your deck. But it's also absolutely AWESOME.

Hey, check it out! You can use it to cast Mudhole!
If you want something actually painful, put it on something that keeps getting chumped and throw out a Brimstone Volley every time.

Its nice since it lets you search for a wrath or akroma's vengence and play it. Thats straight up the best use for this card.
Opponent: I cast something... ME: STOP! HAMMERTIME!

Interacts with Melek, Izzet Paragon. Shame that white is off colour—would have been excellent in Melek EDH. And there aren't many commanders in those colours either. Still, a nice kitchen table combo—it essentially becomes : search your deck for a card with a CMC of 4 or less and cast it twice.
So this card is pretty awesome, right? what would make it even better though? What if instead of only choosing red or white instants you could choose from any colour*? Trait Doctoring has a use!
* provided you know during your main phase what colour you want.
@pedrodyl
"Sunforger, Wheel of Sun and Moon, Seething Song. Infinite Storm."
Ok, so 2 to unequip, find seething song, cast it for free, wheel of sun and moon puts it back into the library, you have 5 red mana, 3 to re-equip, RR left over.... where are you getting the W mana from in this scenario?
EDIT: I know there are cards to filter mana, just seems like it was omitted. Also, too bad sunglasses of urza isnt the other way around
Excellent card. I remember this being a huge bomb in draft. I wish i still had some now that I'm more into EDH. Great build around card, also great even if you didnt build a "tool box", per se. Very good indeed.

It gets funnier with Wheel of Sun and Moon tossing your counters back in for you and Auriok Windwalker giving you free instant equips.

Also, Sunforger + Brass Squire + Wheel of Sun and Moon while having To Arms!, Manamorphose, and Seething Song is a wonderfully complicated way of drawing as many cards as you want, and utilizing as many tap abilities of your other creatures an unlimited number of times.
I'm a simple man.

Also flavorful to cast Volcanic Hammer.
