Okay, so first we had Deadbridge Goliath, a four-mana 5/5 with no restrictions and scavenge.
...And now we have a four-mana 5/5 trampler with flash that can be populated! This is insane!

Advent of the Wurm is a super card for standard! It is like a 5/5 trample and flash creature, except instant putting a token on the battlefield. Excellent for offense and defense and it can be used as a creature kill. Casting in your opponent's turn can also create an opening. Great card! Takes sublimes spot in rotation. 4.5/5.

For everyone who is coming here to say something about powercreep, Sheltering Ancient has been a card for 7 years. Green gets creatures that are above the curve. That is what it does, and it has been a standard for longer than most people have been playing.

I'd be very happy to block a 4/5 Goyf with this, it's gonna be scary to attack into an untapped opponent, even more than to restoration angel
More wurms! Good to see they're getting some attention in this set.

Worse than a 5/5 flash because it's killed with bounce or flicker, but it also can be populated and flashed back. Although, a 5/5 flash would never be printed for four, and it could possibly fit into some sort of midrange/control deck that can leave mana open for a turn.
About being a Gruul card, tokens are Selesnyan, Wurms were in every green guild but Simic in the old block, and it's busting through the Rakdos guild gate, thus all the red (and black) in the background.

I mean...it's good. Really good. It's not, like, incredibly interesting though. It's very good at winning, but not very good at any of the other cool things I love about Magic that go beyond 'building decks that work.'
Which means this card is incredibly vulnerable to Power Creep. After it is no longer so good at winning games as whatever comes in the future, it will be pretty much a Craw Wurm, except not as cool as Craw Wurm because Craw is way way older.
To amend this, the flavor text should have supported believing that Mat'Selesnya really has a special love of Wurms as its Beatstick of Choice, which would have matched our expectations after Armada Wurm. This current flavor text makes me think that any old Simic Monster would have been just fine to use, that it's not all that important that it's a Wurm, meaning it's really pretty hard to care about these Ravnica Wurms in a long-term way. :P
They're Spike-Timmies, like Baneslayer. Baneslayer is going to suffer the same fate to Power Creep, whereas Serra Angel and Akroma will not, just like Craw Wurm will actually outlive this in the minds of nostalgics. :P "If you're gonna use old bad cards, might as well use the worst oldest ones ever that used to honest-to-god make people happy to pull. Magic was a different game back then." Not that Akroma is ever likely to really be called bad. Just saying that even if something better than Akroma gets made, she will stick out in the history books entirely based on that Creature Type line, rules text quality or not-- Legendary. Angel. with a block based on her story. She's HISTORY, whereas Baneslayer is depending on being considered Spikey for people to care about her.
Deathrite Shaman is an Outstanding Example of a Spike card that is also Vorthos enough to always be Cool, whether it's any good in the Future or not.
Well, it does die to bounce / flicker / phasing effects and the like, and unlike regular creature cards, you can't reanimate it. Still, it's of course very powerful. It's a pity that the power of the card is the only remarkable thing about it.

★★★☆☆ (3.7/5.0)(7 votes)
Wow! A card that will please Timmy (big creature lover), Spike (competitive player) and Johnny (combo-guy) players alike! For Timmies, this is a big card 5/5 trampler for only 4 mana. Same reasoning for Spikes, except that the reason is more centered on the mana-cost rather than the fact that it's a big fatty. For Johnnies, well, this is a creature token, so it can bolster a deck that plays around that kind of stuff (yes, the obvious mechanic is Populate).
I can't see any reason for a 5/5 trampler with flash that can be populated AND Snapcasted won't be completely ridiculous in everything it's in.

Bit of a flavor fail.
The true ADVENT of the Wurm should give you a wurm every turn for 24 turns. Then you get Christmas of the Wurm - tons of wurms at once all wrapped up in shiny paper, one with a glowing red nose.

I guess I just don't see why this card is a rare... It's strong yes, but when you consider Havenwood Wurm is essentially the same creature (+1 toughness/in a vacuum) at common, I don't see how this translates to rare, unless it's strictly to make it cheaper. I don't think card's power to rarity should be based on 'how cheap can we make this to make it playable?' This card just screams like it wants to be a chase uncommon, not a rare.

talk about gate-crash. Selesnya might as well chose this wurm guy to be their champion over Emmara and let her be a cheerleader instead. Come to think of it, must be cool to be the 1st Legendary Wurm.
What a weird name for a card. I mean, there's not even a wurm in the art. When I look at this card, all I see is a Power-Creep Elemental bursting out of the ground. WTF, Wizards?

This card is just insane. 5/5 trample with flash for four mana makes me sick. Luckily it is more easily removed than in other creatures. Hey, even a simple Unsummon could do it. Still, the raw power it provides for four mana is unmatches.

this card should be worth more $. by turn four everyone should have out a pretty powerful creature attacking at that point. but when you cast this instantly and take it out sound like a strong move when your turn is coming right up. add wake the reflections to this and you get 2 5/5 wurms for 5 mana.

I'm just going to come out and say it. I don't really like this card much.
Don't get me wrong, it's a very powerful design and I'm sure that there was a good reason for it being included in Dragon's Maze. But I just don't like it much from a synergistic standpoint.
When a card has a lopsided design, it encourages you to build a deck that uses the strengths of the card, but to cover for its weaknesses as well. A card like Adaptive Snapjaw for example... that makes you think. You see that 6 power and you want to use it, but that 2 toughness seems to stop you from attacking effectively. So what do you do? You find other cards that synergize well with it. Maybe a Crocanura would evolve it into a better fighter, or maybe Hindervines or even Trollhide! The only limit is the creativity of your own design.
A card like Advent of the Wurm doesn't encourage this so much. A 5/5 Trampling Wurm token with Flash doesn't need much support. You could ramp up to the 4 mana, but it's already cost-effective. You could populate the token, but that kind of goes without saying. All of the thinking has been done for us as players already, the card is perfect, it doesn't need our input.
As a guy who plays Magic for the creativity of the game, cards like this just aren't my thing.
