Used him at the pre-release. In limited, this dude gets out of hand really fast. In many cases, he got a bit bigger than some of the Eldrazi I was playing. Sacrificing all of those little Eldrazi spawns with this guy in play makes ramping for mana a threat with some teeth.

Multiplayer game? He'd grow a lot faster if other players are sacing creatures too.

Mortician Beetle: Because Gatekeeper, Fleshbag, and the Eldrazi weren't good enough. :)

How exactly does this thing not work? It makes even Demonic Appetite playable.

In a G/B token deck, this guy absolutely loves any devour, Grave Pact, Eldrazi Spawn, and any of the three sacrificial edicts.
Slap on Blade of the Bloodchief and hit 'em with any sacrifice, maybe even sacrifice something you own.
Fun times.

good 1 drop, possibly should have been an uncommon. definitely printed due to annihilator, only problem is it will eventually get hit and will almost never be big enough to take an eldrazi, but then again it is a 1 drop

The flavor text is sweet poetry. Play with a playset of Awakening Zone and things might get nasty

A perfect addition to my sacrifice deck. Especially awesome with sadistic glee, when I'm sacrificing 7-8 creatures in one turn it gets huge. Then it itself becomes a good target to sacrifice with carrion for all the tokens to then sacrifice to the fallen angel.

A 1/1 that gets stronger every time someone sacrifices a creature in a block where black is all about sacrificing creatures? And then Eldrazi? And then potential for things like Grave Pact?
And it costs just B to play?
This card is, in the very least, a 1-drop. A 1-drop that can potentially own the hell out of an Eldrazi.

It's a beautiful thing when opponents waste removal on one mana drops. Mortician and Scute Mob are amazing for that. Low risk high reward cards.

I love this card. I find it works even better than carrion feeder as a 1 drop in my black sacrifice deck. It allows me to swing for 2 after a chainer's edict, then for 4 after a fleshbag marauder. and if they used removal on it it's still a 1 mana turn 1 drop. also I got a foil and the way the dead drone's skulls shine is awesome.

i bought this sucka the day RoE came out for my gravepact/sac deck, and i found that it actual doesn't get me very far... it always got bolted or killed fast or something else, maybe i should give it another shot in the deck, cuz i really really like him
For those not playing standard. Ersatz Gnomes targeting your beetle + All is Dust = One big Mortician Beetle.

Useful in any black deck, good in a black deck facing a sac deck, a complete BEAST in a black deck made for it.

There is already a very tight black sacrifice deck with this that has won tournaments. Go to tappedout dot net and search for "For The Dark Gods."

So rarely you get a 1 drop that says " ey mister opponent, kill me quick or suffer!", only other I can think of with this much potential power in standard is scute mob. This is so insanely good, forget about annihilator, your eldrazi spawn sacs will quickly make this grow out of control in a sac deck. Make your opponent wate his removal on your 1 drop. This is the kind of creature I like, fine by itself, and an absolute wonder in the right deck.

I run this guy in a B/G deck with fallen ideal. thats +3/+2 each sac which has him keep +1/+1 of that. I then run it with a mitotic slime, which can be sacced seven times. 7x3=21. turn 5 flying 22/15 mortician beetle please. and that is without the use of dark ritual or culling the weak.

I agree with fog raider. Bloodthrone vampire and such are amazing with this guy, especially with a blade of the bloodchief equipped and two Nether Traitors to endlessly cycle. Have a pawn of ulamog to double the fun. It gets crazy real quick, and once you get a pumpable creature through your opponent is dead.
I run this in my Teysa EDH/Commander deck and I had him up to a 15/15 in a one on one game. So awesome and fun times.

THIS IS A REPRINT! Noone has noticed it yet, but actual, it's a nice reprint of Khabál Ghoul, where someone missed the colorless mana. ^_^

It feels redundant to mention the potential of this guy plus Reassembling Skeleton, but him plus Bloodthrone vampire the skeletons and Pawn of Ulamog equals 4 counters on him for 2 mana, assuming the skeletons are already out, and the the bloodthrone gets + 8 that turn so you are hitting for 14 on turn 4 potentially.

It is, however, a pretty darn good card otherwise.

Begs to have a deck made around him, and with all of the fun sacrificing effects in the game, you can make it crazy fast. Innocent Blood anyone?
I play a zombie sacrifice deck with Carrion Feeder and Nantuko Husk as my beats, but I was always missing one more threat to dominate the board with. This creature filled that missing gap.
Surprised this guy isn't run in EDH more often. He works with a bunch of commanders, Teysa, Thraximundar, Savra, Ghave, and Kresh off the top of my head.
I guess the downside is that it doesn't provide its own means to sacrifice creatures or make your opponents do so, so in a sense this is kind of a win-more card. Still, sometimes you just need something to beat face, and in the right deck this guy can manage that.

Do I have to directly sacrifice a creature for Mortician Beetle's effect or can I just say I'm sacrificing a creature for another effect and just add Mortician Beetle to stack?

This guy gets ridiculous in Teysa edh. I removed two things with Teysa and attacked with this guy, now a 7/7. Super synergy with Teysa control. Starts with other players trying to stop me from getting teysa fodder, ends with them desperately trying to block/remove this. 5/5 would recommend to all Teysa players.

I'd be more than happy to run this as my 1-drop in a Thallids deck. All the thallids have a sac-a-saproling mechanic, my favourite being Psychotrope Thallid.
An extremely good one-drop for black. If you build around it, it either becomes huge, or it draws removal. A one-drop that draws removal is always a good thing.

the aforementioned Devour (Tar Fiend being the only mono-black devourer)
the aforementioned Fleshbag Marauder
Gatekeeper of Malakir
Any Lord of the Pit type effect, like Xathrid Demon or Archdemon of Unx
Consuming Vapors
Any Eldrazi (Ulamog's Crusher just for one example)
Any card that creates Eldrazi Spawn to sac for mana (Corpsehatch for one example)
And that's just in mono-black and in standard.
Also, devastating synergy with Phyrexian Plaguelord.
Fun times.

Also Mimic Vat, along with Fleshbag Marauder makes a great black creature lockdown. Alongwith Geth's Verdict and Barter in Blood and Gravepact can make this thing unbelievabley huge.
He is going in my infinite deck for sure.
It is, however, a pretty darn good card otherwise.
Just throw in Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, Geralf's Messeger, Entomb, Cabal Therapy, and let it rain pain.
