Thank God this thing isn't blue. I can just imagine what an Artful Dodge could do to someone. Also, a Plansewalker with Deathtouch? That's just mean.

This card will either be godly or lameskis, it is far too early to tell. The metagame hasn't been established yet. Return to Ravnica brings so much to the table that anything can happen. Im sure dreadbore will lead to her destruction at some point though.

I would very much like to see her and Liliana of the Veil go at it though.
I mean those tentacles on her head must do some very talented work ;P

Her +1 does nothing other than let you get more uses out of the -3. Still, the -3 is good enough that getting a couple more spins out of it seems worth it.

That art is freaking amazing. The card it's on probably isn't going to see Standard play...at least, not yet. The -3 is pretty useful, as is the +1. The ultimate is a huge gamble, and unless you can give the tokens evasion, it'll probably prove to be a huge waste.

Well I like the fact that she can blow up Nicol Bolas as soon as she hits the board. Eat it, elder dragon! And her ultimate has cool synergy with Rogue's Passage! It's more build-around than other walkers but she's definitely cool.

Not really terrabad, but nothing I would actually play during any serious circumstanses. +1 is pretty neat but weak I'm afraid, -3 is kinda good but expensive, 5 mana to remove 1 non-land permanent sorcery speed can feel alittle awkward but is sometimes justified. The ultimate is terrabad. Sorry, but I can never see anyone playing this ability over the -3.. There is just to many effective boardsweepers in the format right now in all guild colours for the ultimate would be worth using. But who knows, this PW will maybe see the meta. But I doubt it.

Am I the only one wondering why this is green/black when all of her abilities are black flavoured? Could of been mono-black easy. Anyway she is ok, people will never be using her ultimate as with mostly all planeswalkers as a win con because its just kinda silly. Everyone is looking at that awseome -3 and rightfully so 4/5

Honestly, I would have preferred it if the tokens had Deathtouch and First Strike( a la Glissa) over the "Nyah nyah, you lose!" thing. I'm not a fan of those odd wincon concepts, nor do I like the "you can't lose the game if..." things. I feel like, if that's the only way you can win/stay alive, you should probably find a different game to play. But, to each his own...

I really like Vraska. I love Golgari, and this new planeswalker looks like so much fun! She's got a really flavorful backstory if you read DailyMTG, and the card itself looks very bomby and fun. She is just the way a planeswalker should be: fun, splashy, and not an overpowered "I win" card. I especially like her ultimate, in that it is really unique and powerful, but also easy to deal with by virtually any removal spell. Plus, she is very multiplayer friendly

5/5 for being a force to be reckoned with, but in a fun way!

You guys do realize that the assassins are only 1/1? If someone can get a 1/1 through on turn 7 at the earliest, and I would say later just because the +1 is so poor, then you deserve to lose the game.
Only thing that would make this card good is counter doubling or something that would get the tokens out sooner. Three tokens on turn seven, which would also send this card to the gyard, is really poor. It's not like the tokens have any sort of protection or anything to get them through.

Pulled one of these at the pre-release. I bought into two of them choosing a Selesnya and Golgari guilds and dropped from the tourney and this was in one of the packs I got. Ironically enough in the Selesnya packs.

I don't play normal magic anymore and stick with EDH. This is a fun PW and is the perfect colors for some kind of B/W/G or B/G token generator. She is the only planeswalker that can really protect herself also by giving herself deathtouch at +1! then she comes with a vindicate, and the ultimate at 7 is freaking broken.

If you're lucky enough to have doubling season and or parallel lives in play, that's an immediate 10 counters, and then 12 1/1 assassins of doom in play.
Vraska
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Pulled this card in the prerelease and it scrapped people up. You would be surprised at how many people flung their creatures into it in a desperate attempt to taker her out. The plus one is not useless. Its a blast to play. My new favorite card.

★★★★☆ (4.6/5.0) (6 votes)
I like her, but honestly the best strategy against Vraska is to just ... ignore her.

Her +1 is really only very good against creature-heavy strategies, which should just act as though she's not there and gun for the player instead. WHen she does finally pop her -3 to nuke something, then send in a few of your guys to finish her off. If she builds to her ult, just block them or use something like Electrickery or Golgari Charm.

Against strategies that aren't as creature heavy, she's a bit more of a threat, because she can vindicate, build up to her vindicate again (and if you rely on a few big bombs you probably don't want to swing into her), and if she should ever get to her ult, a strategy that doesn't have as many blockers could be in real jeopardy. But if you're not playing a lot of creatures, you should be playing spells that can handle Planeswalkers, anyway (Dreadbore is going to be extremely popular, I think).

Don't get me wrong. Vraska is really cool and a really fun Planeswalker. But I don't think she's a 30-dollar card.

+1 Greatly protects herself and dares anything to come at her while building counters.
-3 Deal with any threat, except if that threat is a land.
-7 One of the most hilarious ultimate's I have seen on a planeswalker.

I would play her in a control deck, and spam her +1 building a ton of counters. I would not ult unless I could duress first, and be given insurance that it would be a real threat to win the game. Basically I would use her as a nonland vindicate on a stick, and very conservative to spend her loyalty.

I foresee her price staying up there for a while, crossing my fingers that it gos down for some reason so I can play with her.

Fantastic art, creative planeswalker, 5/5

I love Gorgons. Favorite mythological creature of all time. And I have yet to see a MTG card with a gorgon on it that I didn't like, besides Masked Gorgon. And despite how mediocre of a card this is, I still think this one is awesome.

I know some of you may think "Mediocre? WHAT! She is amazing! Doesn't die and can destroy anything! Plus she puts Mini Phages into play." But the truth is she isn't that impressive. Here is how she looks

+1 > Do nothing.

-3 > Vindicate without touching lands.

-7 > Waste a ton of resources and several turns trying something that will really only helps you if you are winning and does nothing if you are losing.

If she wasn't a gorgon I probably wouldn't look at her a second time. The only part about her that is worth using is the -3 ability. Everything else is going to be a waste of time. That said, she is worth at least a 3 for the vindicate ability. And I'll give her a 4 for being a gorgon. Because I <3 gorgons.

Sad things this planeswalker has a so weak impact on the board. If an opponent sets himself all tapped to cast Vraska, I won't counter it. He uses Vraska's +1 ? Well, I'll just bash him as if Vraska didn't exist. He uses Vraska's -2 ? He'll have spent five mana for a Maelstrom Pulse then I'll bash Vraska. He threatens me to use Vraska's ultimate in three turns ? That means three more bashes plus enough time to search for a board sweeper. Vraska is not a bad concept in itself, it's just that it costs a hell lot of mana for what it does. For five mana you can expect something that clearly impacts the board. Gideon turns the tide of the battle, Tamiyo locks the opponent and her ultimate is 1000 times better, even Jace 3 (which is not played at all) is a one-sided Howling Mine. Vraska reads as a Maelstrom Pulse that makes you gain two life, for five mana at sorcery speed. I love planeswalkers, but this one is really disappointing.

I like her a lot. It seems to me her Vindicate is her main attraction: she's excellent at killing other planeswalkers, or your opponent's most powerful stuff otherwise. She can do it right as she comes down too. Making three mini-Phages is hilarious, and while it's not that powerful, it's very combotastic with anything that gives evasion.

On the one hand, I like her. Definately got some interesting ability. On the other hand... Her + ability doesn't protect her. Creatures and burn and the like can kill her just as easily as if she wouldn't have that ability. Yes, creatures die, but that can even be an advantage for the opponent. Some creatures have powerful "die" triggers, or you want them in your graveyard for other reasons, such as scavenge.

The -3 ability is great. But To use it even twice without her dying, you'd have to spend a total of four turns. That's a long time.

And the last ability is pretty unique and interesting. But also less powerful than many other commanders ultimates.

★★☆☆☆ (2.5/5.0) (2 votes)
She's pretty good, I find that the assassin tokens appear rather late in the game to make a successful attack though, they just tend to get the attention of the other player who has to address them while other things are attacking. Maybe if the Korozda Guildmage or similar could give intimidate it could be quite spicy.

Best to focus on the abilities you are most likely to use in game, she comes in at a robust 5 which makes her strong among current planeswalkers and deters attackers by effectively having deathtouch while her second ability can remove almost anything, creatures and opposing planeswalkers alike.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Wow, she's really strong compared to a lot of other Planeswalkers. Nothing like Mindscupltor (thank god), but strong nonetheless.

Her starting Loyalty is by far one of the greatest assets. If it were 4 or 3, an opponent probably would trade a creature just to take her out before she gets pumped up. With that in mind, Vraska's pretty much got no weaknesses other Planeswalkers would have. Her high starting Loyalty gives her survivability, her +1 is a brilliant defense mechanism (If I'm going down, you're going down with me!), her -3 instantly removes a very probable threat on the board, and her ultimate itself is a win condition.

Just IMHO, I still like Ted Mos- I mean, Jace Beleren, Architect better. I still find it funny his +1 can shut down her game-winning goons.
MechaKraken
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Be careful not to forget that Vraska is vulnerable to spell damage, and with the Izzet League chock full of those, she may not last as long as intended. Best to use her as a distraction at that point and not a bomb, while you work your other stuff on the opponent.

Also, don't forget that her +1 ability does not make her invulnerable to combat damage. She can still be sent to the graveyard if the damage is high enough, even if she destroys the creature(s) attacking her.
Sironos
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
A planeswalker that can kill all other planeswalkers and most creatures the turn it comes into play is hard not to love. The opponent doesn't want to let her charge up, but he doesn't want to send creatures at her. I really like her, she is the first true assassin style planeswalker. Whacking permanents usually means a cost of 7+ in planeswalkers, but Vraska does it at 5 CMC.
Her ulti is fun, but not her defining feature.

In a format full of Terminus, Detention Spheres and Supreme Verdicts, Blowing up such an awesome Walker for 3 tokens doesn't seem like much of a good idea. But permanent destruction? Boom. For being a 5-cost, she's worth two on command Terminates, and a hoss of a target for your enemy to tackle.
4/5, because I would've liked to see her compete for a 4CMC-slot.

★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (2 votes)
Salience: The damage from Rakdos Charm isn't combat damage. All Rakdos charm accomplishes against these little dudes is bolting their controller.

This card seems better than it is on account of the fact that your opponent can usually just ignore it and then attack once you use the -3, but it's still nice and I really like that planeswalkers are starting to protect themselves more effectively than simply putting a chump blocker with no evasion onto the board each turn.

★★★★☆ (4.4/5.0) (4 votes)
@Etheral-Dunny:

In short, yes and yes.

Activating the +1 immediately gives her a loyalty counter (it's actually a cost, you might as well read it as: "Put 1 loyalty counter on Vraska the Unseen: Do..."). it has nothing to do with what your opponent does with his creatures the following turn.

There are Assassin token creatures you can draw in boosters, but they are extremely rare, roughly as rare as getting Vraska. I've opened about 13 displays (!!) of RtR and drawn a total of three Assassins. This is because the rarity of the tokens is linked to the rarity of the cards that produce them. Vraska's Assassins and Utvara Hellkite's 6/6 Dragons are "Mythic", the 5/5 Trample Wurms are also "mythic" but you get about twice as many, as both Worldspine Wurm and Armada Wurm make them. Centaurs and Rhinos are dime a dozen, as they are made by commons (Centaurs by several different cards).

Vraska feels a little weak, because the ultimate is so bad and her +1 doesn't really affect the board.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Xineombine, that's exactly what I've been thinking.

I think Vraska was one of the Sisters. Her +1 is exceptionally similar to Sister's second ability. The reanimation would've been too similar to Liliana, so it's a good thign her ultimate wasn't a one-sided Living Death or something.

Then there's the obvious fact that Vraska is probably affiliated with Golgari, while Sister was the guild champion of Golgari in the former set...

Lastly, Semperpi, the ability for the Assassin's works only if it's combat damage. Rakdos Charm doesn't make the creature deal combat damage to its owner.
if it weren't, it'd actually make Razor Boomerang... well, useful!

With Doubling Season out, she comes in with 10 loyalty counters and puts out 6 tokens with 3 loyalty counters left to spare. Her ultimate becomes a "game over" event if it goes off and you can't remove the tokens. I'm not sure it's in the game's best interset for ultimates to be game ending given how easy it is to set them up, especially when people drop planeswalkers so early or use others mechanics to increase the counters (less common). Planeswalkers fit into two categories in this regard then: those that are game changing (their abilities assist you in winning the game), and those that are game ending (their abilities enable you to win the game or make it nigh-impossible for your opponent to win). The planeswalkers in the latter category, while not always the most often used or the most expensive, are the most likely to affect how others perceive you (if you care about that).

@psychichobo

She can definitely kill Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, but she is most likely going to be out on the board before him, and he will react to her by annihilating her first. Hilariously, he gains in loyalty for killing her. She loses loyalty for killing him. Nicol Bolas is definitely a powerful planeswalker, but at 8 CMC and 3 colors, it requires a bit of time before he comes out, and requires two turns to get his ultimate off (which isn't necessarily game ending -- I've had opponents with so many permanents out that seven is just a small inconvenience -- of course, that's when you use Curse of the Cabal and then Nicol's ultimate).

Parallel Lives actually IS as good as a Doubling Season for breaking THIS Planeswalker? o.O
Wow.
Well, not quite, but I don't see any other tokens REMOTELY as good to Parallel than these....d.a.y.u.m.
I'm building a Parallel Lives deck, then X.X
Can't wait to see what Simic let's me do to/with these :) I just am sort of suspecting they will have an interesting interaction, somehow.

Golgari+Simic+Dimir, or Golgari+Orzhov+Selesnya.
That is what I'm predicting for Best Deck in Ravnica Block. :)

Sadfaced that nobody has yet done much Parallel Lives + Vraska in Standard. :P But Doubling Season really does osmething more than Parallel Lives, something very relevant. :P
If Doubling Season is a Mythic Rare in Dragon's Maze, people will DEFINITELY build the Vraska Deck though.

Looking at her, she's the anti Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. In fact, considering I have both and run a black/white orzhov deck with Sorin, seeing Vraska on the other side of the field (which I have) creates a major pain in the ass. She's good against populate/Selesnya decks in standard, but unless your opponent has Rogue's Passage to go with her ultimate (or some equivalent), Vraska isn't much of a threat.

Played against this card and Primal Hunter in my second round against a guy in Standard. They got Hunter out first, used his effect afew turns, with Growing Ranks out, while protecting his Hunter with two fogs. They than got out Vraska and thought to myself, that could cause a problem if unchecked. I threw a couple of creatures at it to only being chump blocked by his beast's. After failure, I went back to my decks first strategy and go Exalted. I slowly built up my forces to wait for Vraska to die off. The turn before they used Vraska's ult, they brought out a Kitesail and an Elixir of Immortality. My immediate thought was shit. Their turn came, they used the Vraska's ult, gave a kitesail to an assassin, used Elixir to get it back into the deck, than used Hunter ult and populated one of the Wurms (8 wurms in total). They attacked with their assassin on Kitesail only. Vraska in my opinion sucks when she is alone, so I'll put her at 3/5, but if you are able to combo her with another walker, she deserves that 5.

Seriously think any token/population deck, if they are running white they should consider throwing a Sublime Angel or two in there just for laughs.

Haven't seen a planeswalker this solid (or attractive) since Gideon. Beautiful.

Also, I like to imagine a Darksteel Myr just following her around and randomly whacking her every now and then. 'Cause he can, just to be annoying.

5/5,
+1 is not as good. But you can easily best decks with big creatures with it.
-3 is a Vindicate. Almost, but who destroys lands? No one. Really I see futile in such.
-7 takes 2 turns, which happens on T7. this ult will rarely see play but is like a phage x3.

If you think of her as planeswalker who sets there and controls the board, she's not the most powerful planeswalker. Her +1 though flavorful only gives her pseudo protection, and doesn't effect the board in any meaningful way. Her ultimate though really cool, the 3 1/1s aren't horribly difficult to deal with and you have a whole turn to remove them or and least shut them down.

Now if you think of her of black, green vindicate for 5 mana, that also is a planeswalker, who can repeat the vindicate every three to 4 turns, or you can put a lot of pressure on your opponent with her ultimate, and possibly finish them off. If you activated her plus +1, if she's killed by creatures, your taking them with you.

If you consider her a repeatable vindicate, with some bonus, you'll find that she is an awesome card.

See it more as reusable removal than anything else. The +1 is basically useless so just use the -3 as much as you can and the +1 just to power her up so you can use the -3. The ultimate is nice but will never be practical.

@Mrbrkill: This is Maelstrom Pulse without the upside not Vindicate. Vindicate can hit lands which makes it much better.

I want to like her, I do. She is Black or Green (my favorite color combo), she is a gorgon (My favorite mythical creature), and her final ability references Phage (One of my favorite cards).

However she is just a bit mediocre, Therealphatmatt has it right. I will play her for flavor, but with her unpopularity I am not sure we will see another of her, which is a shame. As a 5CMC planeswalker in two colors, she is just seriously lacking impact. if her -3 ability was a Maelstrom Pulse instead or if her +1 ability let you provoke a creature too (Stepping on Jura's toes too much?) then maybe she would be more playable. Even her ultimate is weak though. I mean look at Chandra Nalaar, a mediocre planeswalker of the same CMC, she has an ability that also takes two turns to charge. 10 damage to the face and wipe your opponent's field. I honestly think I would rather play Chandra over Vraska almost always. Your opponent has 2 turns, late game, to come up with an answer to 3 1/1 tokens.

I plan on running her in a WhiteBlackGreen planeswalker deck I am making because she has a strategy that doesn't rely on a specific deck type and I think she would play a good second line support to more offense minded planeswalkers. the deck will heavily feature tokens. However, that is what she really is: second line to the A Team.

Throwing her into my Golgari deck alongside Golgari Decoy. Get the assassin's out, swing with creatures and the decoy, should be easy peasy.

In a control deck with a fair amount of other removal, the +1 really does act as protection - if you've been clearing the board to the point where they have only 1 creature out when you play her, then that +1 means that for that creature to trade with her through combat, it'll have to be 6+ power - and considering she costs only 5 herself, there's a good chance the creature won't be. If they have no creatures, you're in luck.

Personally, I just played a game with her where I played her out when my opponent only had 2 1/1s (I had a hand full of value including removal, but these 1/1s weren't a threat so I was waiting for an overextension to sweep). In that case, the +1 is great - if they ignore her and do piddly damage to me, she can go ultimate or get breathing space to Vindicate. If they attack her, she barely takes a hit and kills the creatures for it.

Yes, the +1 will not be great against some decks, particularly more aggressive decks that you aren't able to slow down for whatever reason (usually bad draws and not getting removal). But it's not entirely bad either.

And of course, you can just use her as a potentially repeatable Vindicate, which is handy.

Personally, I just had my first assassin win via her - played her out, ticked her up to assassins, had my opponent tap out to play creatures as he wanted to make sure he'd have blockers - but the thing about black is copious amounts of removal, so 2 creature kills later before combat and my path is clear for the assassination. ^^

The main issue with her is that her +1 doesn't really do anything, but it helps keep her on the field which means you get more pulses. Pulsing a batterskull then eating lingering souls tokens is good enough for me; maybe she'll come into my deck as a 1-of

What I read when I play against her is this:

+1: What do I care, I can give up those weenies and get a token from Thragtusk.

-3:She's weakened! Kill her now!

-8: In Standard currently: Flames of the Firebrand, Electrickery, Mizzium Mortars, Cyclonic Rift, Aggravate and

a whole lot more. Most of those are terrible cards, but still, YOU CAN BLOCK!! Unless they make them

hexproof, unblockable, indestructible, they're gonna die to a whole lot of stuff. This is why Vraska is terrible.

Assassin gorgon planeswalker? (possibly from sisters of stone death?)
AWESOME!
Anybody else feel like the tokens should have death touch for flavour?

And it would be cooler if her first ability made her a creature with p/t = loyalty, with first strike and deathtouch, naturally as an assassin; and they could nerf the second ability to just a creature so it's more fair.
Maybe even change the ultimate so she gets a solo assassin feel- like make make her permanently a creature with lose the game touch, removal touch, first strike and shroud to fit the assassin vibe? With a blinking effect to be like retreating into the shadows...until the next attempt. And it would come back in tapped so it's not like you sweep, bring it out and haste kill somebody. That would be lame flavour.

Interesting how most names with ‘the’ in the title feature a comma after the name. Here it simply reads Vraska the Unseen, with no comma after Vraska.

Perhaps the comma is unseen?

Personally I like her middle ability the best because if one of your opponents has a really nasty creature that they are not attacking with so you could use her first ability, you could just destroy it with the middle ability.

She's a removal engine, plain and simple. Jace getting you down? Vraska knows how he likes it. (Right in the face, in case you were wondering.) I like that she doesn't necessarily take over your whole strategy when you play her. She probably won't win the game for you (which is a good thing, unless I hate you). A nice middle-of-the-road walker for folks who enjoy the game and understand that winning all the time is very boring. 5/5

I am fairly new to the game, so bear with my question and thank you for any insight you may give. I am having trouble understanding how exactly to play Vraska The Unseen. Since she is a planeswalker, is she technically considered a "separate player" and therefore would still stay on the board even after you yourself die? Can your creatures choose to block her when an opponent attacks her? Can an opponent choose to attack her specifically meaning she has to defend and if she is separate from you as the player and your opponent can choose to attack her or not, why would they choose to attack her if that is the only way she can gain counters to reach her ultimate? Also, if your opponent attacks her and she loses counters but gains one anyway because she killed the attacking creature, how would she ever get to her ultimate?
So there is my confusion, again, thank you for any help you can give.

She's an engine. Evasion, repeatable destruction and a win condition in one. For this she deserves a rating of at least 4.1. She just works and I love the flavor and mechanics and how they meld so perfectly.

Typically you want to use her as efficiently as the situation would allow. Her -3 is best used when it proves enough of a setback that one could then proceed to boost her to ultimate or win by other means.
It's also good for ensuring parity. She's almost always going to equate to value. I wouldn't be surprised if she saw at least a little bit of play in eternal formats, most likely legacy.
