Isn't Obsidian rather brittle? I mean, it's essentially volcanic gla^ss.

Yes, but in a large chunk it's quite tough and wicked sharp

This one is so OP in warrior deck. C'mon think Marisi's Twinclaws. On 3rd turn if not mana accel, you cast this, then turn four cast twinclaws and attack with 4/5 double strike haste (unless you have Bramblewood Paragon on the field)

Why is it that warhammer is spelled just like that but battle-axe has a dash? It makes it so hard to remember the correct spelling for cards. >:O
maybe because the last letter of battle and the first letter of axe are both vowels. That'd be my guess.

I just love playing this with Dauntless Dourbark in my treefolk deck. The irony of having a huge angry tree slicing my foes with an axe almost makes them forget they got hit in the face by a huge trampler that just got on the field. Almost.
I like this card for casual games. Haste is great, and the bonus to size is respectable. Perhaps what I like most about it is the warriors that it interacts with themselves; Keldon Marauders get a lot better with the Axe out, as does Goblin Gavaleer. You can get an Unsummon and an attack out of Stingscourger, even if you don't want to pay the Echo cost; it's a similar situation with Mogg War Marshal. Reassembling Skeleton gets a lot of opportunities to wield the Axe for free, and even if the Haste doesn't matter to it, at least the pump makes the utility creature somewhat imposing.
This was my motivation to build a Warrior deck. Seriously, this card has such a cool name, artwork, and most importantly: IT FEELS GOOD to put it for free on your newly cast creature to give it haste and an unholy strength boost.
Fairly intimidating in a Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer deck. My heart sinks watching my flatmate drop Jor on turn 4 or 5; this flips into his hand transforming him into a 10/4 first-striking monster (assuming metalcraft bu that point).

Obviously best in a warrior deck. I use this in Tolsimir Wolfblood EDH. The deck doesn't have a ton of synergy, but having this out really helps. If you want haste, you can just use Lightning Greaves, but this clearly has a different angle to it. For example, Brighthearth Banneret makes this cost less. Champion it with Unstoppable Ash, because you can. Other than that, there are better equipment, if you aren't doing warriors. Sword of Vengeance comes to mind.

This reminds me a bit of Ronin Warclub for warriors. This can be quite devastating with proper support - Wrecking Ogre would swing for 10, and Nova Chaser for 12.
- The extra 1 toughness allows Hunted Troll to bust through his faery pursuers and survive without regenerating, even if your opponent blocks with them all at once.
I didn't see Keldon Marauders on here, which is a shame. 2 mana 5/4 haste, deals 1 ETB and LTB.

possibly the thing I most want to do in magic is have this and Boldwyr Intimidator in play, animate the axe, make their dudes cowards and attack maybe even have two of these and equip the second one to the awakened one, attack with an axe wielding an axe that the cowards are to scared to block. It's a rubbish combo but it's full of stupid awesome.

I would run this over Lightning Greaves in EDH if my general was a warrior. Shroud is a little overrated anyway in a format where, if they don't kill your creature in response to equipping Greaves, it's going to eat a board wipe soon anyway. Specially... Brion Stoutarm? It buffs him to 6 power, which is even more relevant with lifelink. Then you can put the auto-equip to good use with other Giants, swinging and then flinging them with Brion.
The art on this card makes me want to scream WTF!! It's obsidian, yet it's grafted into metal!?? And with a camera strap!!!! I mean, get real! An obsidian axe is a stone age thing of function and beauty... this???? And when was an axe felled tree ever cut flat!?? I love magic, but this leaves me grasping for reason and common sense!

Please play only in a changeling or warrior deck, seriously.

Other fun stuff:
- Run with Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer, Bleak Coven Vampires or Ezuri's Brigade, even helping to activate their Metalcraft abilities.
- The extra 1 toughness allows Hunted Troll to bust through his faery pursuers and survive without regenerating, even if your opponent blocks with them all at once.
- Viashino Sandstalker.
