Hooray broken cards!

Since the effect doesn't limit to forest, I can see this being another target for reanimation. Just hope your opponent doesn't have a sweeper in his hand.

You: I attack with Liege of the Tangle.
Opponent: I take 8.
You: I turn all my lands into 8/8 Elementals. Your turn.
Opponent: I play (Insert Your Preferred Mass Removal Spell Here).
You: @#$%#

Pretty much perfect. Cards that cost 8 should win the game (see Stormtide Leviathan), and this one does--either for you because your opponent is overrun with 8/8s, or for them because they have the Day of Judgment, heh.

Obviously the correct play is to not overextend, and make only a few 8/8s. You shouldn't need many more to win, anyway.

Oh, and I shouldn't have to say there's certainly nothing broken about him. Dies to everything, etc. I doubt he'll even see Constructed play, he's a simple Limited bomb.

GW = Liege of the Tangle + Terra Eternal = Army of indestructible Lands!

This is a prime example of a great Green Mythic.

This is actually the card I'm hoping to get the most.

I get quite irritated when people criticize a card for being vulnerable to removal. LOADS of cards are weak to removal, that's what removal is for. Treebeards Mirran cousin.

Guess who's never going to see play outside of Limited and casual? And for anyone who says this guy is broken, you obviously have never played any competitive MtG. 8 mana is prohibitively expensive in a format in which aggro decks end games with 5-6

That said, he fits well into my EDH deck. "I hit you for 8 with the Liege, and turn all of my lands into creatures. then I use Earthcraft to tap one of my lands, targeting that land and untapping it. Over and over. It does so much!"
Yes, I enjoy useless infinite combos, even more than I enjoy useful ones.

Classically big bad greenie, that spawns his own horde of tokens (animated lands). I hope you'll keep yer mythics like this, Wizards.
5/5 for not being some ridiculous birds of paradise or another staple ****** clone in mythic rarity slot.

Combined with asceticism and bellowing tangleworm, you have quite a dangerous army. And with the regeneration you get from asceticism, day of judgment is nowhere near as menacing.

I don't see why everyone just says 'Dies to mass removal'

So does Emrakul, The Aeons torn

So does Progenitus.

So does anything that doesn't have Indestructibility.

Now, let us think, logically here. What nice deck do we have...In standard no less, that manages to get the previously mentioned 15/15 turn 2 or so...

Does it happen to be Mono Green Summoning Trap decks ?

To count on an oppenent having one of 4 (Probably not second game, lets not forget Day Of Judgement is being Sideboarded more and more) when this hits the board. Even if it only gets one attack. That is still a smack to the face. And you don't have to animate all your lands. If any at all. Anyone stupid enough to over commit that much when Mass Removal is so high deserves to get spanked.

4/5 for funsies and something to watch. Highly unlikely it will make it anywhere. But I certainly wouldn't mind a summoning Trap into 1 8/8 Liege and 2 8/8 Lands

This card is the epitome of the term 'win-more'. If you're getting combat damage through to a player with an 8 cmc 8/8 with trample, chances are you're already winning and turning all your lands into Day of Judgment fodder isn't even necessary.

As a person who primarily plays green, I feel obliged to love this card. It's extremely flavorful, and incredibly powerful in a casual/limited environment. But at the same time, we have to be realistic. This card just isn't that powerful. If I'm looking for a non-Titan green bomb, I'll take Gaea's Revenge or Terastodon over this any day of the week.

Want a 2/2? Easy. You get a ferocious grizzly bear with white runes that glow ever so subtly as it tears you to shreds.

How about a 4/3, for a little more of that green muscle? Sure! You get an incarnation of Nature's fury, built from the ground up with nothing but cruel vines, tough thorns, and, in a sick twist of humour, all of his friends, too.

Not enough? You want a 6/6, you say. No problem. I give you a stampede of baloths, all hooves, claws, horns, tusks... you name it, they'll pound you with it. Show 'em a new brawling pit, and they'll round up their 4/4 cousins, just chompin' at the bits.

But if all this really, really just doesn't cut it, then I've got just the thing for you. Coming in with a spectacular 8/8 body...

You get lime jelly. And the best part? It makes more lime jelly.

Deelicious.

This looks like fun!

Edit: Got him, and oh yes is he fun. I've rarely been able to attack, but this is because he is an absolute lightningrod for all removal from everyone, and basically an Insist in that no-one will have any counters left for my next beatstick. The look of pure terror on their face makes it worth it.
And if you DO land a hit, you are going to enjoy the subsequent turns as you've rarely enjoyed Magic.

Also, this guy should go out with Timmy.

Question, you play liege of the tangle and I act of treason it. Do my lands become 8/8s because it says "deals damage to a player YOU may." Does this you refer to its controller at the time. In that case this card is very powerful but fair due to its many weaknesses i.e. removal, control, mostly red and blue.

I don't see why the awakened lands don't have trample... perhaps to force the player to commit more lands to kill an opponent? If the lands received trample, then I would animate like two or three of them. However, as it is, if you want the job finished on the next combat phase, then three is the minimum.

If the lands had trample, then this guy would be a cool early game sneak attack (or in this guy's case, Incandescent Soulstoke) target, just awakening one or two lands when he hits.

If you are a new player, search gatherer for creatures larger than 6/6 or creatures that cost more than 6 mana. A lot of wasted cardboard I know. That's why players who have been around for at least a couple of years exhibit such cold reactions to such big mana creatures and other players who get exited about them.
exple: "Sphinx of Magosi is soooo awesome!!"
More importantly, it thoroughly irritates experienced players when other players spend more time discussing how many of what huge expensive creatures to run in their decks as opposed to discussing what their deck is going to do up until the point of being able to play said big creatures.
exple: "Should I put in three Sphinx of Magosi and two Gigantomancer or should I have just two Sphinx of Magosi, two Gigantomancer and an Avenger of Zendikar??"
Furthermore, it greatly irritates experienced players when other players discuss other cards that combo with an expensive powerful creature late in the game- especially when the combo is about drawing more cards or killing more permanents or something like that that doesn't finish the game.
exple: "I could use Gigantomancer with Bloodshot Trainee to do 4 damage to any creature each turn!"

This seems stupid good on a lot of casual tables, but honestly, that's not what bothers me the most. Liege of the Tangle should only affect the Tangle (Mirrodin's forest) - why and how the hell would he turn mountains and islands into green elementals?

OK if this has been answerd anywhere sorry for not seeing ti and it might be a dumb question but do the lands that are creatures count as tokens or actual creatures. What im ultimatly getting and is if i ran him in my GW rampwave could i combo it with Elspeth Tirels' -5 for a field clear and give my 8/8 lands an open field.

What I've learned from these comments:
This card is apparently unplayable, because even if your opponent is playing mono-black, they will hit you with a Day of Judgement or Wrath of God and destroy all your lands. Makes sense.

Good in a Black-Green ramp deck, hilariously cruel in combo with Ob Nixilis, The Fallen

Think about it this way: I shall make you loose 3 life when ever I cast a land ... but tis not enough my dear, I shall buff up my demon ... by the same measure ... and then I shall turn all my lands into 8/8 elementals. Crying now? I can still use them as land!

I can literally block you with my lands (I remember it being a joke since one of my mates would always get destroyed, leaving him with only lands ... He used to say "I block you with my mountain/forest." Now I can do it for real. +0.5 in rating just for that alone

Holy balls. I could see this being used with Incandescent Soulstoke to make a Combo/Aggro deck. You just aggro and occasionally you fill the board with 8/8s T3/T4.

It has natural protection from Show and Tell in Legacy by giving you about 32 power if they show in an Emmy or Grisel. Even if they block they get hit by 24 damage. Even 16 should be lethal...
