Are you all seriously complaining about this card? All I have to say is O M G, awesome card, big 8/8 creature for blue! and it doesn't have to require some silly defending player using island ability to work, and lets take a second look at that 8 mana ability. You can use it any time you have 8 mana, to tap almost everything for 2 turns, dang. Its a huge creature with a built in sleep spell, and if you don't know how powerful a sleep spell can be then should try one out. Note that it says "permanents" not creatures! That means you can tap all their lands if you want to as well, and they don't untap for 2 turns, meaning if they don't doom blade your lorthos right away, they can't use eight lands next turn. The turn after that you can tap the other lands, and your opponent can't play anymore lands the rest of the game. Could also tap half their lands, and some of their creatures, or even some of their mana producing artifacts. That is one fantastic creature, play it in a blue green deck, and you can have eight mana seriously by turn 5ish. If you got noble heirarchs.. even earlier than that. Oh and combo this with brine elemental, and your opponent can't untap their permanents for 3 steps instead of 2, letting you lock down 16+ at a time, 2 turns with lorthos and 1 extra step with the elemental.
Oh and secondly, my god people chill out with the doom blades and terrors and whatever, there is not a single thing in magic except for progenitus that can't be countered, killed, or otherwise exiled. Even progenitus isn't 100% safe.
Update: Another combo for you, have 1 of these in your deck, and djinn of wishes, paired with anything that lets you tutor to the top of your deck, or look at the top so many cards of your library (spy network). Then just play lorthos for a nice 4 mana.

I love the 8/8/8/8 theme, but I wish he was a kraken. White has angels. Black has demons. Red has dragons. Green has...well. practically everything it has is ginormous! (But I want wurms to be their main guy) But blue is supposed to have krakens and leviathans as their juggernaut, closesly followed by sphinxes. Oh well...it's a great card. The second turn it attacks, you can have 16 permanents tapped. :P

I really don't like this guy. He's great flavorwise and all, but in the game of Magic, the only time flavor is a factor is when you're playing at home, not in competitive ranked play. Mythics should be something that when dropped, should inspire panic and be hard to get rid of. Take Baneslayer Angel, Rafiq of the Many, and the Maelstrom Angel for example. All of those Mythics can ruin your opponent's day, and require nothing more than attacking to do it. Lorthos requires you to not spend mana on your next turn if you wanna play his ability. That, to me, is terrible, when your beefy creature loses it's worth because you might want to play a spell here and there, that, and he's practically useless if you manage to get him out any turn prior to 8. Also, by the time Lorthos can come out, if you make it that far, you're likely well aware of how the game will end up, with your loss or your win. Lorthos only screams "More win!" or "Last gasp!" He won't turn the tide of the game, most especially since he has no way to ensure his continued survival. Inkwell Leviathan is prime example of a creature that verges on being Mythic worthy. It has all the things needed to make the perfect beater in blue. It's got evasion (Islandwalk), a way to ensure some damage (Trample), the ever coveted "Leave me alone" (Shroud), and to top it off, his stats are better than Lorthos, the Leviathan being a 7/11, all of that for only 1 more converted mana than Lorthos. Oh, and if you use Rise from the Grave on him, you can use him at his fullest potential, since he doesn't require every ounce of land you control to operate. I think one thing that would have made Lorthos legions better would have been a change in his ability. If it read "1: Tap target permanent, it doesn't untap during it's controller's next uptap step. Use this ability no more than 8 times" It would be so much more functional, and still keep the flavor.

I'm just going to make sure, but you people realize that it says "Those permanents don't untap during their controllers' next untap steps." Steps. That means until someone loses they're tapped to this ability, unless some other card forces them to untap. Maybe most of you already noticed but I'm just saying to make sure people see that it says steps and not just step.
Oh? Then nevermind this then. Personally I forgot about the next thing, but the whole usage of "steps" threw me off.

Actually I think this is exactly the sort of card that should be mythic. It's unusual, packed with more flavour than a fine claret and he's not going to be the mainstay of anyone's deck, so there'll be no one mortgaging their kidneys to get a playset. It's just depressing to find him squelching around in the rare slot when you wanted a lotus cobra.

This card is awesome. It totally blows your opponents over. It doesn't make sense that you can't like this card. The artwork is awesome, but who cares about the "flavor" of this card - not matter what the "flavor" is, this card is incredible in its power.
Nobody mentioned that it is essentially unblockable - whenever Lorthos the Tidemaker attacks, you can tap up to eight of your opponent's creatures, and unless they have more than eight creatures, they can't block Lorthos, and you can deal them a solid eight damage. No matter how powerful their creatures are, they get tapped and can't do anything. And you can do the same thing the next turn - the next time, you deal them at least another eight damage and then tap all their lands, or whatever you want. It's well worth paying eight mana - what better way is there of spending eight mana at that point?
I've never seen the after-effects f this card actually, because its always won the game whenever I've seen it used. I used this once with Denizen of the Deep and won the game. For eight mana this card is a bargain. Though I wonder how a confrontation between Lorthos and Master Decoy would work out. Anyone know what would happen?

I guess you weren't playing by the rules because Legendary Creatures can't be replicated or cloned, it removes the original creature.
@ Donovan_Fabian
Weird...I JUST finished a game with a G/U deck revolving around this creature. The problem was I played against another blue control deck and the game ended up lasting forever >_< I still ended up winning, but didn't get to use the spell until turn 16, the last turn. Before that it was a ton of canceling, mind controlling, and sleeping. Epic match nonetheless.
But yeah, I use land ramp to get him out as soon as possible. And for all the doom-bladers out there, I don't even think about dropping him without 2-3 reserve mana for negate or cancel. So yeah, it takes 10 mana to REALLY drop him with confidence. So that's around turn 6-7ish with Harrow, Khalni Heart Expedition, and Terramorphic Expanse
I have to admit, it's sort of a pain to get him out, and you really do have to just spend the early game cancelling everything that comes up, but once he drops, and you negate the inevitable Doom Blade, he's good to go and you have an auto-sleep per turn. I also run 4 Howling Mine, and I'll play 2 when they come along. This makes sure I get all my cards, but the downside is it feeds the opponent doomblades and other removals. It's a tough call, I may take them out and see if the deck still functions.
Again, fun card but pretty tough to play him unless you run a ton of control and land ramp, and even then it's difficult. I'd say getting him out and functional though is so much more rewarding than any of the Zendikar Quests. It's a lot of work, but the reward is really amazing. 5/5 though for how Epic it is to win with this guy.

Nope. The ruling on this one is that they only stay tapped for one turn longer than they normally would. The plural of "step" is used since Lorthos allows you to target more than one controller or opponents permanents, in which case it would be different steps (turns) of untapping. "Next" also implies a singular step of dormancy.
Gotta love that his ability is worded so that it's triggered, not activated. There are only three cards in all of Magic capable of countering a triggered ability. I took mine out of my blue deck because he kept getting mind controlled, but that's probably my fault for not playing him with enough counters in hand.

I'm sorry but anyone who likes tis creature is a noob. In a competitive setting it will never see play. In two turns and 16 mana you get to tap all of the other players permanents? WTF? That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. With 16 mana and two turns you could do an insurmountable amount of things that are better than this mana intensive crap. You spend 8 mana to put him on the board and someone spends 2 mana to destroy him with terminate. That is what will happen 99.9 percent of the time. Or better yet, they could spend one mana and destroy him with a path to exile.

Try just using, I don't know, Quest for Ula's Temple. Just leave Lorthos hidden in your library somewhere until the end of your opponent's turn. During endstep, pull Lorthos outta your library straight on to the field, swing for 8, pay 8, tap 8. Perfect. Or just SWING FOR 8. I think too many people are too caught up on the tap ability. Yes, it is pretty awesome to super-tap 8 permenants at once, but, yeah, paying 8 mana to do that is pretty difficult. So fine. Just swing for 8. Perfect.

I would have prefered something like: , lorthos, the tidemaker gets -1/-1 until end of turn: tap target permanent, it does not untap during its controler's untap step (do this no more then 8 times a turn and only during your turn)
still costing 8, but that is much better I think, you lock a tenticale down (-1/-1) and lock a permanent down

Would someone please give an example of what Mythic Worthy is!
Because in my opinion Lorthos the Tidemaker is the perfect example of what is mythic.
. He is a legend, which adds flavour
. He has a new, flavorful ability
. He has the 8.8.8.8.8 theme
Arguably he has his own quest, the Quest for Ula's temple, as he is the only octopus in Zendikar/Worldwake.
Okay he is never likely to see constructed play, at least not competitive although I reckon he is a popular EDH general, Mono Blue Stall, until Lorthos locks them down. We will see. However, how can anyone say Lorthos should not be mythic. Next people will be complaining how Akroma Angel of Wrath and Baneslayer should not be mythic. Okay utility cards such as Lotus Cobra its annoying to mythic them meaning casual players cannot afford them but what do you want to be mythic!

Admittedly, he's a bit expensive (Plated Slagwurm has the same P/T for 1 CMC less, and your opponents can't target him), but if you can build your deck to deal with the cost he's likely going to be worth it. I can already see him in a Blue/Green deck alongside Nacatl War-Pride.
If {8} bothers you that much, you can always throw a few Heartstones in to lower his ability's cost.
First time I bough Zendikar, I got him. I'm not a blue type of guy, so I didn't use him until I created a sunburst power deck. He's weak compared to Darksteel Colossus and Progenitus, but in practical use, he's more powerful than either of them.

I used this card in a group setting of 4 players. After getting beat up for awhile and losing my first Lorthos almost right away, I managed to get out a second one in mid- to -late-game. Then my luck turned.
Pretty much as soon as you can start attacking, your opponents' days are numbered. I was playing an all-Blue deck so I kept a Negate handy. Against a Blue/Red, Black, and White deck this pretty much shut everyone down (although they had already been weakened some).
Tapping lands and big creatures was about the most useful thing here, and with a Whispersilk Cloak or Quietus Spike you could kill off opponents even faster.

Donovan_Fabian: Progenitus can be countered. he has protection and he shuffles, but thats it. protection dose not come into effect until he is a creature, and there is a reason it states 'target spell' or even 'target creature spell' and not 'target creature'. counters don't target the permanent and so pro blue can still be counterspelled.
Emrakul, the aeons torn on the other hand, boasts that he can't be countered in addition to pro colored spells.

Mythic rares aren't supposed to be suitable for competitive play, but people forget that because a few, like Lotus Cobra, Baneslayer Angel and Jace, the Mind Sculptor apparently show up at every tournament. Better examples of what mythic cards should look like are Platinum Emperion, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Lorthos here: huge mana costs, huge bodies and devastating, interesting effects. Lorthos obviously isn't a tournament card, so he shouldn't be evaluated as one. Tournament Magic isn't the only kind that exists; cards like this are just fun. In a casual multiplayer game, the giant octopus wiped the floor with me and another guy without breaking a sweat, as he clearly can. He can freeze eight permanents and swing for the same amount of damage? I'd say he's pulling his own weight there. This is a game-winner in the right hands.
Okay, you people are blind. Seriously, are you ready for this?
1. Look at the mana cost.
2. Then the power.
3. Now the toughness.
4. The "pay 8".
5. The "tap up to eight".
You guys are only able to go this far when you really should...
6. Count the lines in the text box.
7. Add the first two digits of the collector's number.
8. Check the number of hedrons in the art. Seriously, check 'em.
There you have it, EIGHT INSTANCES OF EIGHT. Be sure to pick up your bricks on the way out.

@ Japicx: I remember how they said that about mythic rares too. "Don't worry guys, this rarity is just for the fun, swingy cards, not for the tournament staples." Apparently they are terrible at identifying tournament staples, or they decided the prospect of increasing the number of packs needed to get a chase rare fivefold was too good to pass up. I'm betting it was the money that inspired them, both to create mythic rares and to make cards like Jace and the Titans mythic rares. Personally, I never believed them when they said that about mythic rares; it was always about the money.

according to people who put up "doom blade is better than this," doomblade is also better than about 3,500 other creatures (those are creatures that are not black indistructible and dont have shroud)
will everyone just shut the f up about doomblade, we get it already, it is cheap, it kills creatures, we know that.
besides, thanks to people like you who go on about doomblade, i managed to pick one of these guys up for a couple of bucks,
Probably my favourite card in magic, just for flavour, he is in my blue stuff deck, full of lots and lots of blue stuff, including psychic venoms, tap down all your opponents lands that don't have venoms attached, A third of your lands are poisoned, the other two thirds have lorthos's tentacles wrapped round them
I think he deserves his mythic rarity status, he is just too plane awesome
to me this is a super Balanced, flavorful and awesome Mythic that may be far from perfect but everytime i use his 8 ability when i swing in the game is pretty much over (i have yet to see a come back after that). Dont be caught using rite of replication on this dude (unless you wanna get rid of your opponents) as he is legendary (and rightfully so). An amazing mythic that isn't broken/too cheap and annoying, its not exactly hard to win with Lorthos but if you do deserve the victory IMO. As for the removal goes...shut up, Magic was designed so 2cmc 5 cent commons can easily get rid of your 30 dollar Mythic rares and im glad... honestly this baby deserves a solid 4.5/5 but since it looks Cthulhu-y i gave it a 5/5.
So, in order to claim one awesome victory with this guy, you just have to put someLightning Greaves on him, shake your opponents hand and make them quit with rage.

@Lionsmane - no, you couldn't. The ability triggers once, so you get the option to pay it once. If you had multiple combat phases though you could do it twice, obviously because it'd be attacking twice.
In any case, I've underrated this card for a while due to its mana cost. I recently picked up Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, and he's in my favourite deck (UG ramp), and he really does shut out most games. You just tap down all their blockers, effectively casting Sleep on them, and you usually get a couple of lands to help it out. Of course, the deck is much better in 2 Headed Giant, and I guess that's my point - if you're playing a format where you can afford to go a little slow (usually multiplayer, or EDH), then the 8 mana cost isn't too bad, and the triggered ability while being just as expensive is very deadly.

Octopus. (Octo = 8) 8 tentacles. 8 mana to cast 8 mana for the ability. 8 tapped cards. 8 power. 8 toughness. Card #53 (5 + 3 = 8)

Never been a mono-blue Mage prior to D.O.T.P 2012 (ps3) and interestingly enough, this brute is in a U/G Eldrazi deck and happens to be EXTREMELY playable. Anyway, if he lasts a turn, it's game over. That's that.

If you have eighteen mana available you could time stretch and then activate it once per turn. Either you win during this or immediately after, unless they can survive with 24 untapped permanents for a turn.

Why doesn't it have islandwalk? I guess it's because then it look to much like Wrexial, but it would have made sense. Also would allow me to run it together with Stormtide Leviathan.

Definitely love this guy in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. It can take some effort to get him out, but, by thunder, is it satisfying when he does his thing. And I second Cute-Hydra. While this card may not be great in competitive play, everything about the styling, flavor, and mechanics of this card scream mythic worthy. I mean, in order to be mythic, one must have songs sung of them.
It doesn't matter what comes, 'Twill be tapped in due time When Lorthos taps their permanents! Nothing gets to you, Staying tapped, staying blue, When Lorthos taps their permanents! Tapped is better! Lorthos tapping! Tapped is better When Lorthos taps their permanents! Lorthos, the Tidemaker.

So now we have a giant octopus.
Now all we need is a proportionately huge shark to recreate the events of the timeless epic (except not really), "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus".

This guy is pretty cool, his ability can and will win the game, if left unanswered. Also, 8/8 for 8 blue monster, whats not to like?
Edit: Just made a commander deck with him as my general. Bunch of counterspells and bounces. I can stall long enough to get the mana to cast/protect him, and when I swing its good game. Brutal commander.

Combos with 8 mana to lock your opponent out of the game.

I admit the art and flavor text are really awesome.
I doubt i'd ever play it. Did I mention that it's cool?
thats the sad story i know, but thats magic for you
Awesome art and flavor. Game winnder if you can get him to attack and pay 8 mana
Vorthos, Lorthos totally wasn't targeted at you.
Very cool card; maybe not the best but it's definitely fun, powerful once you get it out, and undeniably Mythic.
This card is lacking in abilities that would greatly improve it, like Shroud or Trample, but aside from that, this card is great. Blue control in a big package.
Gotta love that his ability is worded so that it's triggered, not activated. There are only three cards in all of Magic capable of countering a triggered ability. I took mine out of my blue deck because he kept getting mind controlled, but that's probably my fault for not playing him with enough counters in hand.
By the way, he'd go great with Magosi, the Waterveil.
Sounds a lot like Mentos, the Freshmaker...
Here comes FRESHNESS!!!
I'd love to make a stasisy EDH deck around him though.
Maybe Aboshan is Lortho's little brother!

3.5
still costing 8, but that is much better I think, you lock a tenticale down (-1/-1) and lock a permanent down
Would someone please give an example of what Mythic Worthy is!
Okay utility cards such as Lotus Cobra its annoying to mythic them meaning casual players cannot afford them but what do you want to be mythic!
mana acceleration means you can play this sooner, and while accelerating mana, ur creatures get their landfall boost, knocking creatures out. if you want to make the deck revolve around this card, make ur mana acceleration Harrow and Terramorphic Expanse; that way ur get the boost on their turn to block
Haha 8 mana to swing for 8, way too much (by the way I play green, Terra Stomper anyone?), but in all seriousness this card is fantastic and makes me want to play blue/green for him and Goliath Sphinx
If {8} bothers you that much, you can always throw a few Heartstones in to lower his ability's cost.
4/5
Good Design, Wizards. This is the stuff I like to see.
Emrakul, the aeons torn on the other hand, boasts that he can't be countered in addition to pro colored spells.
Training Grounds doesn't help, because this isn't an activated ability due to the way it's worded. It's actually a triggered ability that triggers when 1) You're attacking, and 2) You pay the
Without stuff like quest for ula's temple, this was kind of a dead card to me.
But is it better than Stormtide Leviathan? I'll let you judge for yourself.
Be sure to pick up your bricks on the way out.
...EIGHT PAGES OF COMMENTS.
He pretty well single-handedly(seven-tentacled-ly?) owns the game after you drop him in a 1v1 game.
1st turn forest + ammy of vigor
2nd turn island khalni heart expedition
3rd turn forest + harrow, sac the forest
search for an island and a forest with harrow
expedition pops and you search for and island and a forest
you have 6 mana, and 4 of it is untapped
explosive vegetation for an island and a forest 8 mana, 2 untapped
use the last 2 on whatever you want that turn
turn 4, well youve got the mana and the idea
Don't forget, Thraxan_Number_14, it's an octopus
according to people who put up "doom blade is better than this,"
doomblade is also better than about 3,500 other creatures
(those are creatures that are not black indistructible and dont have shroud)
will everyone just shut the f up about doomblade, we get it already, it is cheap, it kills creatures, we know that.
besides, thanks to people like you who go on about doomblade, i managed to pick one of these guys up for a couple of bucks,
Probably my favourite card in magic, just for flavour, he is in my blue stuff deck, full of lots and lots of blue stuff, including psychic venoms, tap down all your opponents lands that don't have venoms attached, A third of your lands are poisoned, the other two thirds have lorthos's tentacles wrapped round them
I think he deserves his mythic rarity status, he is just too plane awesome
And for extra fun Extraplanar Lens, and Snow-Covered Island's.
That seems slightly overkill, but I want to try it.
I think this card wins some kind of "strangest pun to show up on a Magic card" award.
Given that pun, the flavor text make it sound like Lorthos has terribly unfresh breath when he wakes up in the morning. I bet there's a mint that can help with that...
