I loves me this one. I could never wrap my head around Esperzoa since it infallably makes me pick up cards that I desperately need on the table, this one however is the optimal cheat as far as infinite combos and big artifact creatures go.
I've managed to get a hold of half a playset of these and I'll be sure to get me the other two soon enough. Pity that this card is so expensive...

This card ROCKS! i managed to open a playset out of a box of boosters and i built an Alara/Conflux Constructed Deck ASAP... all i can say is if an opposing deck can't remove her before summoning sickness wears off the game is over before the opponent can blink. Ive tested the decks with her in both one on one and multiplayer and already my friends cringe at the sight of her! Especially when you bounce a Sanctum Gargoyle for a Scourglass during your upkeep and Wrath every turn or bring out an Inkwell Leviathan (which i might add is so made to interact with this card).
The decks for this card are numerable and insane! If you get your self a play set, just make the deck and dont look back!
Also Something tells me this card is not only going to shape a new archetype of deck strategy shes also going to become one of those insane cards that make people kneel down on all fours and ... well you get the point!

This card is pretty much unstoppable when paired with Thousand-Year Elixir. If both of them are able to hit the field without being countered, I usually win the game without much trouble. Bouncing Sharuum the Hegemon, Grim Poppet, Magister Sphinx, and other giant artifact beasts over and over again is just amazing.

I play her with a great combo with Sharuum the Hegemon and Mindslaver. 3 cards and 5 mana make for a devastating loop. Just rinse and repeat and it either becomes a 1 man game or your opponent may just concede.

Master Transmuter is one of my favorite cards in the alara block. Her ability is so powerful... it can be use to protect your artifacts (including herself) from this like Path to Exile, Oblivion Ring, Bant Charm, etc., or you can bring a bomb into play for just one island. She basically very hard to get rid of once she comes into play and survives her sickness.
She is more of a quaterback in my esper deck and when she is in play is almost a definite win, and with the help of Sphinx Summoner I can go and get whatever creature I want for the right situation. Need to gain life in your Esper deck? Try Parasitic Strix and/or Filigree Angel bounce them back and foward at your opponent end of turn.

Just a friendly reminder that returning the artifact to your hand is part of the activated ability cost, so you can in theory play the same exact card you returned to your hand again. This is outlined in the card's rulings as well, and allows the potential for some wicked bouncers, such as Filigree Angel.

Hey, Im kinda of new in this game and I find this card really great (With a low mana cost to play it) but as I was playing with some friends it occured to me.
Can someone use a counterspell on the card I'm going to put in play? Because I'm not really sure if that could happen, if so, can some one help me with this?
If the card can't be countered, it would make this card, a rather, outstanding creature for any Artifact Deck.

★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0)(4 votes)
Counterspell will only effect an opponent's SPELL (IE: a card that is coming into play). Master Transmuter, however, is using an ACTIVATED ABILITY (an effect caused by a permanant already in play) so Counterspell (or any card that targets a spell, like Countersquall for example) doesn't work.
Even better: Since Master Transmuter's ability requires Mana to work, it is considered a 'Mana Ability', which means that cards like Azorius Guildmage, Voidmage Husher, Voidslime, etc all the rest WON'T counter it either!

This card seems abusive with Tidehollow Sculler. It seems fairly easy to setup a combo where your opponent can never play a spell ever again. At the very least, you could remove your opponent's best card from their hand every turn for WUB.

just use her effect with a bonesaw or a talisman of dominance (after you gain your colorless mana for it of course) and you no longer have a setback. use her effect with the filigree sages to pump out more than one 6 cost or better for 2. she should be a symbol of an artifact deck, she's symbolic of esper itself, how everything is made of etherium and how they can transmute anything into anything else

I like some of the nonobvious things you can do with this
if you have an untapped master transmuter, and an opponent targets your say, darksteel colossus with path to exile, you can activate master transmuter and return the darksteel colossus to your hand and play him again. Since he is a completely new target, the opponent loses their path.
Also, you attack with that darksteel colossus and then during your second main phase you activate transmuter on darksteel and put him into play able to block. Essentially giving him vigilance.

@DarkbladeWraith: Her ability isn't a mana ability. A mana ability produces mana, like Birds of Paradise, Black Lotus or Plains, not one that requires mana as a cost. (Though there are mana abilities that require mana, too.) Mana abilities don't use the stack and can't be targeted, Master Transmuter's ability can be targeted, responded to and countered. Usually it doesn't matter though, if your opponent lets you untap with this in play, it's most likely game.

Best thing about this card, is (apart from bouncing cards which untaps them) because its uses an ability rather than a spell to bring creatures into play, your opponent can't counter them!! This has won me countless games, pair up with Leonin Elder, plenty of artifact lands and Thousand Year Elixer and your life gain will go through the roof (especially if you bounce Filigree Angel)

other cards that work very nicely with Master Transmuter Kaleidostone - return it to your hand to play a card from your hand, then play Kaleidostone again to keep your hand healthy. Platinum Angel - I shall say no more. Filigree Angel - Bouncing this card to your hand and back to the field once or more times per turn seems a little unfair on your opponent. Usually by the time this guy comes out you could expect to have about 7 artifacts on the field (Fieldmist Borderpost, Mistvein Borderpost, Obelisk of Esper, Kaleidostone, Master Transmuter, Etherium Sculptor, and Filigree Angel as its effect resolves after is has hit the field). That is a total life gain of 21, if you have only 1 Master Transmuter on the field. Darksteel Colossus Sharuum the Hegemon - Because it brings an artifact back from the graveyard, and it is not conditional to Sharuum being on the field (ie; when Sharuum leaves the field, the artifact brought back does not leave as well) Master Transmuter can Manage 1 of these guys once per turn. Also, I would like to note, if you have 2 Sharuums, you can create an infinite loop of Sharuums going to the graveyard and comeing back again, which can heavily benefit some card combos, having a power 5 creature enter the battlefield repeatedly. This infinite loop would be quite rude with anEssence Warden or Soul Warden in play Sphinx Summoner - Managing one of these will give you the ability to pick the creature from your library which u need most at this point in time, and using Master Transmuter, play it for a blue Inkwell Leviathan - only problem is, u cant then use Master Transmuter to bounce Inkwell to your hand, as it has shroud, so if u have no other targets to bounce, u have to bounce Master Transmuter Tezzeret the Seeker - Tez can manage 2 Master Transmuters per turn, giving you incredible power. Sphinx summoner played for a blue gets you the creature u need, your second Master Transmuter plays it for another 1blue. Tez then untaps both of them, and you can do it again. If you're using your Master Transmuters to play a Sharuum, then you can use Transmuters ability, bouncing Sharuum to the field, retrieving (insert card name here) from your graveyard. then use your second Transmuter to do that again. then untap both Transmuters with Tez, and do it once more, keeping a single Transmuter untapped to counter your opponents artifact destruction. Metallurgeon - A Master Transmuter will win the game for you if you can keep it on the field for at least 1 turn. It should really be called Magnetic Transmuter, due to the way your opponent stares at it and at their hand repeatedly after you play the thing. Metallurgeon helps keep it alive.
Master Transmuter is vulnerable to getting Path to Exiled as it hits the field, and correct me if I'm wrong, but i also believe effects like Disfigure cannot be regenerated from, since the card being regenerated still has -2/-2 this turn, as it has not actually left the field. I am not sure of this, so if anyone has more info, please advise me

I'd imagine the only reason this isn't a mythic rare is due to the weak body (1/2 for 4 mana isn't too flash). The ability is certainly a game winner if not quelled quickly. It's essentially part Elvish Piper, part Unsummon - thanks to which, you can constantly reactivate the many come-into-play abilities for effectively 1 island.
The last few games I've played have all ended up virtually the same: Master Transmuter and Sanctum Gargoyle out with a Scourglass in the graveyard. At the end of the opponent's turn transmute the Gargoyle into itself and withdraw the Scourglass from the graveyard. Use Scourglass as needed, then repeat the combo to get it out of the graveyard if you do.
Whilst I haven't come up against it myself, Pithing Needle would be a real combo breaker though. I usually play with one Dispellers Capsule for destroying important opposition artifacts (ie. Eldrazi or Platinum Angel), so I can only hope that it either isn't in the graveyard at the time, or I still have one of my graveyard searches in my hand or library. ^^ On the plus side, if Transmuter is untapped when Pithing Needle comes out and you DO have a Sanctum Gargoyle/Sharuum in play as well as a Dispellers Capsule in the graveyard, you can use a last ditch transmute (just as Pithing Needle goes on the stack) to get it out again.

ArKive - You are correct about the -2/-2 in that it cannot be regenerated from. Doesn't really matter with her, because she can bounce and replay herself, but you're right. Also, Inkwell Leviathan can be bounced because her ability does not target.

This card works well with ornithopter, insuring you bring out creatures for just one blue mana. Also if you have a transmuter on the field and another in your hand, you can block and before the damage step you tap for its ability and replace it with the transmuter in your hand and put in any random artifact you have. Keep repeating this and you technically have a blocker that can't die. And it's also good for bringing in artifact lands D:

For those who think that being a 1/2 makes this card easy to get rid off despite its tremendous combo potential, read the Rulings on the Details tab of this page.
Holy crap, the rulings make this card invincible as long as it's untapped and you have one blue mana to spare. The only other time it's vulnerable is when it still has summoning sickness. Naturalize, Terminate, Path to Exile, etc. -- no problem. Simply bounce it back to your hand to avoid the effect, (paying a cost cannot be responded to; and if you choose to return MT to your hand, that is part of the cost) then put it back into play. If the opponent uses a battlefield-sweeping effect like Wrath of God or Nevinyrral's Disk, you can choose not to play this card when you bounce it back to your hand because the rules text in the card says, "You may put an artifact card from your hand into play." She can also block a huge attacker and leave unscathed. Sweet! And freakin' awesome art too! 5/5

lol, she really looks like a friend of mine.
although it has some combo potential a tinker would be better for various reasons:
1- this is a creature, and it probably won't survive one turn with all the removal and affinity hate in extended, which is the best format for artifact decks imo (i don't like legacy).
2- it has a converted mana cost of 4, meaning you'll probably be dead or pretty close to dead when you play it an trigger it's ability (personal experience).
3- it will just get a path once you trigger it, unless you return it to you hand instead of picking another artifact, in which case they'll just break the artifact you just put into play.
4- ancient grudge and kataki in every sideboard i see... :(
5- there was actually a deck playing with this, but it never went very far and i don't think it won any major tounaments.
although it's pretty good for amateur decks. you should check the power nine if you want to see broken, they'll let you win at the 1st turn without drawback.

i just pulled this last night and pulled a sphinx sovereign today, cant wait to throw the two in my artifact deck together, especially with a few sanctum gargoyles in there! beautiful!
Rather than Ornithopter/Bonesaw/ect for 0, I prefer Sigil of Distinction, the X mana cost can be played for 0 to sit in wait of her ability, and in times of need, or lategame when you don't need the massive manapool, you can pump Sigil into a comeback card, at very worst you play it for 2 and give a creature +1/+1 so bonesaw beats it there, but in a transmuter deck that scenario is rare, and most likely wont have made the difference. Also, Sigil's biggest problem is the fact that it will eventually run out of counters if re-equipped multiple times, so bouncing with Master can help Sigil just as much as it helps Master by being fodder for more devistating artifacts.
Best choice for a bounce is an artifact you control being targeted with destruction or removal, but it seems like everyone agrees it's a good idea to run a few low/free casting cost artifacts to get the ball rolling, and Sigil is my favorite.

With 4 of these in your deck, one of these babies is going to poke through successfully sooner or later. Your opponent's first Maelstrom Pulse might knock her out, but all it takes is one round where you're opponent is short on removal cards and wallah! Instant Inkwell Leviathon, Darksteel Colossus, or Sphinx of the Steel Wind. There's no 4-cost card out there that's an instant game changer like this one.

Amazing card, como-tastic. I have to confess, I don't think it is "entirely" broken since she costs 4CC to get into the battlefield, and won't be able to toggle her ability untill after that.
That having been said, awesome power-house of a card capable of bringing in a winning threat for virtually no cost. Anything that allows you to turn Library of Leng into a Darksteel Forge has to be considered a major threat.
She is also excellent for protecting your creatures from targeted spells AND triggering combos on arrival/departure effects like Glaze Fiend for example.

Such an astoundingly beautiful card. Incredible art, incredible frame, incredible flavor, incredible ability. A million times better than Elvish Piper, since for her color she's more easy to fetch, she can place any artifact down on the field (not just creatures), the bounce is more of an advantage than a drawback (easily circumvented with Ornithopter, Mishra's Bauble, etc. or easily abused with Filigree Angel, Sharuum, etc.), and a Blue artifact deck is going to have a much, much easier time protecting her than a Green beatdown deck is going to have protecting the Piper. (Just off the top of my head, besides counterspells - Welding Jar.)
Also, Thousand Year Elixir, Etherium Sculptor, Vedalken Engineer. Screw you, summoning sickness and 4cmc.

I use her in so many different ways in my artifact deck. Sure, the most obvious application is cheating my expensive artifacts, like the Darksteels Colossus and Forge into play, but I also use her to allow my artifacts to dodge targeted destruction and repeat beneficial CIP effects. What's especially fun (and no one really sees it coming in the current metagame) is to have more than one on the field and repeatedly bounce a Heap Doll or similar with Reaper King in play. Her ability becomes ": Destroy target permanent."

Also, I would like to note, if you have 2 Sharuums, you can create an infinite loop of Sharuums going to the graveyard and comeing back again, which can heavily benefit some card combos, having a power 5 creature enter the battlefield repeatedly. This infinite loop would be quite rude with anEssence Warden or Soul Warden in play
Sphinx Summoner - Managing one of these will give you the ability to pick the creature from your library which u need most at this point in time, and using Master Transmuter, play it for a blue
Inkwell Leviathan - only problem is, u cant then use Master Transmuter to bounce Inkwell to your hand, as it has shroud, so if u have no other targets to bounce, u have to bounce Master Transmuter
Tezzeret the Seeker - Tez can manage 2 Master Transmuters per turn, giving you incredible power.
I am not sure of this, so if anyone has more info, please advise me
The last few games I've played have all ended up virtually the same: Master Transmuter and Sanctum Gargoyle out with a Scourglass in the graveyard.
She might be blonde, but her body is kind of a turn off.
That's the same strategy I've been building a theoretical deck around for the past few days.
I'd tell you how I'd make it even better but I don't want anyone else joining the 1-man-game bandwagon until I at least make the deck and test it out.
this is the ultimate artifact infinte combo synergy everything
try artifact lands and this card!, in walks arcum dagsson, hmmm we need a darksteel forge, sorry crappy myr, you can die now we need a darksteel forge, im waiting for them to print an urza plainswalker card,
maybe in return to mirrodin (i hear rumors of the next set) urza gets outta the hottub, tells karn to sort out mirrodin after what memnarch did to it
they should reprint karn too, i cant find a copy of him in my country. grrrr
although it has some combo potential a tinker would be better for various reasons:
Best choice for a bounce is an artifact you control being targeted with destruction or removal, but it seems like everyone agrees it's a good idea to run a few low/free casting cost artifacts to get the ball rolling, and Sigil is my favorite.
5/5

I'll read the bloody rules next time (No hard feelings?)
this is a great card. but still not as good as elvish piper.
and i love the artwork
Also, Thousand Year Elixir, Etherium Sculptor, Vedalken Engineer. Screw you, summoning sickness and 4cmc.
Thus you can switch out a weakling for your fatty and use it to block an unsuspecting enemy. Or you can bounce something in response to say... Terminate?
This can be best used with voltaic key ( or something similar ).
Unfortunatly ol' tezzy Can't operate at instant speed. But him operateing a pair of thes on your turn is still epic.
Then again, I may be a little biased.
Ornithopter; bounce drop a huge monster and then drop the thopter for free again.
Turn 2: Just do whatever the hell you want until you win.
That was my first thought after looking at the casting cost. I guess maybe they were thinking that most colored artifacts should be low on the colored mana, but man. That just makes this so much more exploitable than it already is.
Turn those Darksteel Relic into whatever you want.
"Yeah, sure. Totally awesome card, but also totally broken. We would never print something like that again."
"Look at the thingy."
"What?"
*FLASH*
"Hey, remember Tinker?"
"Yeah, sure. Totally awesome card, we should do something like that again."
