Use this with Sanctum Gargoyle and maybe a Carrion Thrash or two to bring back the Gargoyles. It's a great save in a game where you're opponent's creatures are pummeling you. It evens out the odds a bit.

This card is very fun after an opponent uses Arcum Dagsson's ability.
this card is broken. Esper itself is broken. This card mixed with cards like sharuum the hegemon and master transmuter makes you wipe the field....every turn. sorry not wipe the field, wipe your opponents field. This card makes me cringe.

Really didn't want the card in my artifact deck but my wife made me put it in(obviously she is smarter than me). Playing a friend of mine put it in play. He had Broodmother dragon(?) on the board for a while. MANY DRAGON TOKENS. 1 Scourglass later, cleared the board of ALL his dragons and won the game. He officially hates the deck now and named it "Outta Time".

Seems like a good combination with Master Transmuter. Swap in a Scourglass during your upkeep, pop it, and follow up with an Armageddon. It's a whole new board, your opponent won't have any permanents.

My only issue with this is that you can only use it during your upkeep, was a moment of sadness when I read that on mine.
couldn't you use bringer of the white dawns effect to play this during your upkeep and then activate this ability since it is still technically your upkeep.

moonfaerie, your wife MADE you put a card into a deck? Really? Like, REALLY?
I love stumbling into artifact cards and seeing "Works great with Master Transmuter. There are probably three whole artifacts in the history of magic that DON'T work with Master Transmuter. Stop bringing it up, we get it.
The fact that even with cards like this, Sharuum the Hegemon, and Master Transmuter, Esper took a back seat to Jund and Bant at tournaments really speaks volumes.

I'm pretty sure people are bringing that up because of the "during your upkeep" clause on Scourglass. So along with only paying U, you get to put it down on the safety of your upkeep and activate it immediately. If that doesn't sound like a huge deal, consider that in a 1-on-1 if you tutored this (rather than top-decking it) you're shaving one turn off of locking down the game, and in a larger game… well, put this down on your main phase and see if you can survive to your next upkeep.
So yeah, people get that Master Transmuter works well with artifacts. This one just works even better with it than almost any other artifact.

Pop it into play at the end of your opponent's turn with Master Transmuter. The look on their face is priceless. Then bounce Sharuum to wipe their board every turn. And don't kill them. Make them sit through it until they concede.

The name looks to be a throwback to Soulscour. I think I like this better just because of the tricks you can pull with it, but Soulscour is definitely more of a game over button if it resolves. Especially with the artifact lands you had access to back then.
I'm intrigued why they used "all permanents except artifacts and lands" opposed to " all nonland, nonartifact permanents". See Planar Cleansing and Duress. It couldn't have been a syntax change because 7th version Duress used the same format. Was it an actual rules issue or just a random thing?
Oh, did I mention this works well with Sharuum and Master Transmuter? You could also Prototype Portal with Doubling Season to get 2x the tokens. And this dies to removal. (Don't you love the Gatherer echos?)

Back when I was first getting into Magic, one of my buddies had this in his deck and, somehow, neither of us had noticed the "Sacrifice Scourglass" part of the activation cost.
Just let that sink in for a moment.
Yeeeeeeeah.

Flavor-wise, why was this printed in Shards? Conflux would've made so much more sense.
"My heart it ceases, my breath undrawn, My eyes ever focused, on the sanguine metal dawn." Karas the Hegemon.
Well, at least it's cheaper than Soulscour. Weird art though. Cool, but weird.
3.5/5, because I rage at coloured artefacts.

This card is really strong. I'm planning on using it in my Tajic EDH deck which uses lots of equipment to make him really scary. Board wipes like this will kill everything except my commander and all his equipment so it is perfect.
Soulscour may make it into the deck as well, but that card just costs so much mana.

Even without MT, this thing is a terror in an artifact deck; holy smokes.

then use master transmuter to bounce sharuum to get it every turn
