Love the card mechanically, will definitely play it, but not sold on the artwork. Her pose is so weird and the tilted perspective seems pretty unnecessary. Also it's really easy to miss the veil here since it's being covered up by that fire in her hand. Why not have her wear the veil when the card's name features it? And why aren't her marks glowing? I thought they were supposed to glow when she casts spells. Presumably the fire in her hands come from a spell.

I know that this can be considered a good planeswalker because it can defend itself, give card advantage, and comes out earlier than the other Liliana Vess.

I just feel a little unhappy with this one. The other lili was just so much more epic. Also, I am not a fan of her Innistrad apparel.

I love her. Drop her on turn 3 and +1 your Vengeful Pharoah and you've got free removal each turn that she lives, as well as a way to keep their stored cards down. That's some attrition I can live with. She still has her -2 ability in case you absolutely can't deal with one of their creatures, due to Hexproof or whatnot.

And that +6... <3

Seems pretty good, and her cost and initial loyalty resembles Jace Beleren. Her plus' and minus' aren't, for better of worse.

I do have to say, however, I like the ultimate ability. You can use it in conjunction with Liliana Vess, make them sacrifice all the creatures (if they choose the right pile) then resurrect them.

I'd say, this is a decent improvement to Do or Die. Instead of just creatures, you can target permenants, however, Liliana costs 1 more, and has to take at least 2 more turns after that to use the effect.

I will say right now that I will not be in the least bit surprised if she breaks $50 that's how much of an effect she has on the board as soon as she comes out, (which could be turn 1 in formats with dark ritual,) especially being safe from incinerate. I think she could make monoblack in standard turn 3 her turn 4 Phyrexian Obliterator . Also great with Vengeful Pharaoh, Bloodgift Demon, and everything's good with Grave Titan. 5/5

When I pulled Mikaeus, the Lunarch during the Prerelease I was actually disappointed. Not because Mike's a bad card, but because I really, really want this card instead.

Fortunately I pulled two Snapcaster Mages there, too, so I'll be selling those for obscene amounts of money and probably buying a Fat Pack. And then praying to whatever demons Liliana signed with that I pull her.

@steev - Actually that honor goes to Jace Beleren, via Black Lotus. Unless you want to bring the Moxen and Tolarian academy into the picture, in which case, you would be able to play any planeswalker turn 1. :3

That said, this card is nice, although she will have a hefty price tag for a while. Here's hoping for lucky pulls, at least until I get a job..

Thankfully, for the low mana cost, I managed to bring her out relatively early in the game with Diabolical Tutor.

Ok, I have skipped the prerelease for schooling, and went to the bloody release, first pack i opened was her. <3<3<3.

That being said, she is an amazing card if you can play constructed. Otherwise, her abilities in limited is hard to pull off. I lost all my matches and the worse part about it was she was always out on the field. Her abilities to my perspective are really tuned but can be improved. I wished they had the other artwork steve argyle did. the slightly uncensored version. This one, its ok, but the uncensored was just beautiful. the background fit her perfectly, and the outfit was teasing, but not ***ty. It was perfect at casting the essence of lili. Beautiful, seductive, but will run you through like any sorceress would. Her current ratings are accurate with what she do so im glad :)

Probably the most overpriced card in the history of this game (been playing since end of Revised). I mean she's good, but she's not $60 good.

Insane what people will pay for a card that is a 4.250 at best, going by this obtuse rating system (don't get me started on that topic)

What happened to common sense and actually being able to evaluate a card?

Oh well, let the suckers pay $60 a pop for her. I'll save my money for cards actually worth that price tag, which I have done many times over and for a lot more than $60. (i.e Black Lotus, Set Of Moxes, Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, Timetwister, Time Vault)

But this? Boggles my mind TOTALLY.

And before anybody tells me that I don't know beans about cards or this game, I've got a collection of over 35,000 cards and have seen and played just about all of them, along with their price tags at peak. No card ever cost this much and did relatively so little. And please don't tell me the original dual lands from the early sets. I got them for $20 back in the day and they made all the difference in the world in a multicolored deck. My 5 color Sliver deck with 24 dual lands was faster than some mono colored decks. And those 24 lands cost me all of $280.

I can just about get a playset of this overrated piece of cardboard for that amount.

Seriously you people who spend insane amounts of money on cards that are good at best but in no way game breakers.

Jace? Yes, that card was busted as hell. It deserved the $100 price tag.

But this? You've GOT to be kidding me.

I'll sell my whole collection of cards (value'd at about $30,000) before I pay $60 for THIS.

End of rant. Feel free to flame away.

In regards to Steve Argyle's artwork http://cyrem.org/noir/mtg-innistrad-liliana-of-the-veil-official-artwork-preview-spoiler/ both are amazing, but the one chosen for the card is much more subdued and the background is much simpler, the alternate one shows Liliana in a more provocative "belly dancer" type outfit, the background has a very S&M, skulls and bones feeling to it. I think both artwork have their merits, but the alternate artwork would've represented her Ultimate a lot better, having to sacrifice permanents seems really suited for Liliana's personality. 5/5

She's good, but not $70 good. And she's certainly not $70 good this early in the block, since there really aren't that many fun things to dump in your graveyard yet.

Unless you're just using her as a $70 edict, she's a build-around-me card. Like Tezzeret, she needs support cards to take advantage of her abilities, and one reanimation spell and a 7 CMC dig spell aren't quite cutting it for me. Personally, I'll just play Tezzeret--who does have an entire block to support his abilities (and can actually kill my opponent)--and pick up my playset of Lilly after the price crashes in two months.

I have made a deck that already takes advantage of her. I can kick of her ultimate mulitple times in game just for the fact BW Decks are really good at control. Mirran Cruaders and Phyrexian crusaders with her are really mean which is another feature to combo with her but I really like the fact that I have my play set of her. But I still have to admit she is really expensive at the moment for most people to use so she will either pull a gideon or a Jace 2.0 and start out expensive and go down or just stay expensive.

@2pcsofcandy: perhaps her marks are not glowing because she's finally found a way to get around her dark deal with the demons, or at least one of them? After all, that IS why she's in Innistrad, to hunt down, or find a weapon to kill one of the three demons ruling her. If I'm not mistaken, Griselbrand, the demon who killed Avacyn, is one of the demons Liliana had a pact with. Can anyone confirm this?

Or alternatively, her deal with Nicol Bolas is overriding the demon magic... After all, Bolas is more powerful than the three demons combined. (see novel Test of Metal for more on Liliana's deal with Bolas)

Liliana of the Veil seems like an amazing card if for her +1 ability alone. Build a deck around that and you got card advantage coming out of your but hole, throw in some burial rights and sun titan and you start hurting things...a lot.
Splash some blue with a pinch of flashback cards and your are winning games.

I like Liliana, and although black is not my think, I'm changing my opinion fast. However there are a couple easy things that can get rid of her and her flaws.
1) other graveyard decks. If you are playing the mirror match, or you are up against splinterfright you may be in for some dissapointment...
2) Beast within seems like a fast counter to Liliana and if they are using her they are likely using control variant, which mean there is little they can do with that 3/3 beast anyway.
3) Brimstone folley covers her well early game and late game doing five damage.
4) white has the use of nevermore and other other strange ways of dealing with Liliana but no-one plays mono-white so you will have other option
5) Same here for blue, if you can't counter Liliana you with have to rely on your aggro (illusions) or your other color to do the work for you. Galaxian probe with said, nevermore, work well in shutting down any engine that Liliana was granting your opponent.
In other words wait for them to throw their cool monsters in the grave and call un-burial rights...its sucks after that point.

I enjoy the game Liliana brings and the various decks she brings back to life (hello solar flare) so I'm giving her a 5/5 a good, cheap plains walker that isn't OP and breaks the enjoyment of the game...Looking at you Jace, The Mind-Sculpter equipped with banhammer.

Question Can Liliana Vess be played with Liliana of the Viel. They are technically not the same Planeswalker (yes same person but not same card). I have heard a similar question before with can you play both Jace Beleren and Jace the Mindsculptor at the same time as they aren't the same Jace card. With that other question no one managed to actually answer it. I haven't managed to find rules against this yet.

@Lord of Shadow - It's similar to legend rule except the subtype is all that matters. People played Jace Beleren in order to kill Jace, the Mind Sculptor. So 1BlueBlue Jace Beleren basically could be "Destroy Jace, the Mind Sculptor" or keep opposing players from playing their Jaces.

So basically Liliana Vess and Liliana of the Veil would kill each other since they can't exist at the same time.

I honestly can't fathom her price tag, but I'm not the type to pay 40 for one magic card. Her first two abiliities are all you really need her for. Her ultimate's good, but not good enough to worth chucking 3 cards and not making your opponent sac anything. But alternating between the first two abilities with some proliferate or whatever can lock an opponent down while they're trying to stabilize, and you can use that advantage to get ahead and beat them down.

So, I picked up some Innistrad and M12 packs the other day. In the last M12 pack I opened I finally got a Chandra, and in my first Innistrad pack I pulled this. I feel like this is the universe telling me to put together some kind of RB control/burn deck. Maybe discard Chandra's Phoenix with Liliana's +1 and bring it back into my hand with Chandra's? I'll have to look for other, more game ending combos.

Okay, fine, I actually just want to see if having them both in play at the same time gives me the kind of nerd erection that I think it will. DON'T JUDGE ME!

EDIT: Crap, I got so distracted making crappy jokes I forgot what I was originally going to say. So she's holding the veil in this picture, what do you think the chances are of them making equip type cards for Planeswalkers? Pulled her out of 1 of 2 packs on Christmas day! Though sadly she is now only $35.

I remember a few months ago when she was $80 and someone at my LGS traded a Force of Will for her! He was playing Standard U/B control with 3 of her and 4 Snapcaster mages. It made my heart warm when my Standard, Pauper, Infect deck beat him 2-1. With my most expensive cards being 4 Glistener Elves (which were $1 at the time), the cumulative value of my deck couldn't have been over $10.

I like to play this Liliana with Genesis. You discard Genesis into grave yard and then return any other creatures into your hand. You can do a combo with many creatures that have ability when come into play such as Solemn Simulacrum or eternal witness to help reviving all the strong creatures in your graveyard to your hand.

Opened it in my second Innistrad booster. First Mythic I ever opened. I knew she was good, but definetly not worth her hideously high price at the time, so I immediately sold her for a big bunch of boosters. I don't regret it at all - first because her price now has halved and I got Army of the Damned, Past in Flames, Mayor of Avabruck, Heartless Summoning and a foil Splinterfright, and second because of my Vorthos reasoning: it's what Liliana herself would have wanted me to do in that situation. I got a nice deal for myself and she probably got paired with a player who had the resources necessary to build a kick-ass deck with her.

Where I live, my opponents fear her. I put together a Standard "Sunburst" deck using Gideon, Jace, Chandra, 2 Relentless, and Liliana . . . they would opt to remove her first before the others. To be able to use her ultimate is such a rush to see your opponent just sit there and watch as I divide what they got. It's better to activate it as soon as possible, believe me.

I've had a mono black deck since '99. When Innistrad and Dark Ascension came out, I found the single best turn 1 target with Dark Ritual ever made. The bane of any combo deck is simple countermagic, and man, if they don't Force of Will her or Mental Misstep the ritual, its pretty much done. That's not even factoring in her -2, which perfectly deals with any threats they might still have remaining. Still , the ultimate is my favorite ability in the game of magic, hands down, bar none. You can separate the field exactly the way you need, dealing with a single problem, or separating all creatures and lands, or artifacts and enchantments, it doesn't matter, one pile has to be sacked, and that's why Lili 2.0 is the greatest black planeswalker, her older self and Sorin can even drop with a stupid Counterspell but Lilian of the Veil?

She wins games, period 5/5

Behold the new queen of Magic, and not just Standard, mind you. The new Liliana is appearing on everything, from the title screen for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 (in which she has a killer deck) to the boxes included with Innistrad Fat Packs and even on the front page for magicthegathering.com. Liliana Vess has literally taken over all things Magic. Truly, the new dominant force in the Multiverse, at least until Bolas decides to get off his ancient ass.

The card discarded with Liliana's +1 does not give Lotleth Troll a +1/+1 counter. The discard is forced due to the planeswalker's ability; you have no option to discard that card to pay the cost of Troll's activated ability.

Very good Planeswalker.

I think it goes without saying that Liliana of the Veil is the second best planeswalker ever printed. And the numbers and stats show this to be true. The artwork just puts this card over the top. Not withstanding the card that should never have seen print, she IS the most powerful planeswalker in the Magic universe. Period. Her value will only increase.

Steve Argyle is like Liliana's personal artist. All the best art of her is done by Argyle. It's like Jason Chan and Jace.

@Lifegainwithbite, where did you get that he was generalizing. Last time I checked, he talks about a b!tch. You know, no? I think we can all relate with @h8yuns' furry for uncontrolled recklessness. And as far as I'm concerned when she enters the battlefield, she really is a b!tch to deal with. Great card. 4.5/5

@h8yuns: This is magic. Go find a more suitable forum to talk about how much you hate women.

@cg1248: Come on, those are common women-hating stereotypes. Just read what he says. I don't care if he hates women, I just don't want to read about this guy's ex-wife on a magic site.

yeah, I'd totally tap that. (searches Gatherer for things that tap Planeswalkers)

(2 years later: Ral Zarek taps her and untaps himself. oh yeah. ;D)

Case File: Liliana Vess, A Vorthos Dissertation-- Part One
Lorywn-- Liliana Introduced. Demonic debt hinted at. Shards of Alara-- Nicol Bolas returns. Malfegor killed and eliminated as candidate for one of Liliana's Demon Masters. Agents of Artifice-- Liliana trades Demonic Debt for Bolas Debt, except that Bolas isn't even sure he can keep his promise, and it's not like he ever intended to anyway. I conclude they are about equal, that Liliana and Bolas could do it together, and that as Black-aligned Planeswalkers that both have a love of pacts, deceit, and betrayal, the idea of using basically White strategy (alliance) is insane. We know these are the Top Dawg Demons because Bolas fears their combined power.

Curse of the Chain Veil (cancelled) original sequel to Agents of Artifice. Almost certainly it tells the whole story, or at least summarizes everything we know about Garruk vs. Liliana, Liliana and Jace, Garruk looking for Jace to find Liliana, and Liliana's debt with Bolas, from hints here and there in the Webcomics, Duel Decks, and other Planeswalker Novel and Savor the Flavor references. Probably has Kothoped's death scene in it at the end after she retrieves and claims the Veil. I'm betting it ends with her Planeswalk to Innistrad.

Test of Metal- (Best MTG novel ever): There's actually every reason to believe that because of 'Clockworking' (research at your own risk), most of our characters are dead and we're dealing with Timeshifted copies. and don't fck with Tezzeret. -.- Tezzeret pulls about 40 billion gadgets out of his ass and Wins with a dozen Crowning Moments of Awesome. He frees Liliana from Bolas BUT, not from the Demons. (Continued on comments for Demonic Tutor)

When did she become so god damn expensive and why? I just traded one away today before looking up the price, only realize now that I got a terrible deal by about $25. I don't understand how she can be worth $50.

Ha ha. Didn't expect to run into so many hardcore feminists on a magic site. I don't hate women in general though. Only a select few have earned that privilege, and are certainly not granted it based solely on their gender. Hell, I thought it was funny. I like the card and was personally amused when I realized that her list of abilities parallel three very prominent b!tchy female stereotypes. You know. Irony..? Well, a few people got it.

5/5 for my favorite card ever printed. I love Black, I love sexy ladies, I like 3 drops, and I like control. She is all of these rolled into one card. Best planeswalker printed so far, take that Jace, the Mind Sculptor I had 3 of you and now I have 0, yet I have 5 Lilies, I opened 3 and traded up for other two.

Little Lily is definitely a contender for the best planeswalker ever. Using the +1 and -2 together in an efficient manner will wreck pretty much every deck. I'd straight up advocate that she's better than JtMS, in that coming down a turn earlier counts for a lot.

About her? The judgement is obvious:
-She is card advantage if you lack a hand or can exploit the card in the grave
-She's card advantage if she nails a creature or three.
-She's card advantage if she ults
-She costs 3
-She's a sac outlet
-She's a discard outlet

If you have a deck that happens to want a way to kill off it's own creatures (Abyssal Persecutor) or need a way to get critters into the grave (such as Bloodghast) she additionally provides that.

@Hunted0Lesser: People who've been following the secondary market will know better than I do, but it all boils down to supply and demand. Innistrad packs aren't being printed or opened (it hasn't been the current format for draft and sealed for two years), which curtails the availability (ie: low supply) and LotV is also a staple in competitive constructed formats outside of Standard (ie: high demand). (and I promise I'm not trying to condescend here)

As to why it's hit a recent price spike of $50+, it's possibly in response to cards hitting Vintage/Legacy like True-Name Nemesis, which is pretty annoying to get rid of, but with LotV, you have other means to deal with it for less mana, and isn't as narrow in function as other cards that cost less (Counterspell, Thoughtseize). But that's just a guess.

I was never really into playing walkers before she came out, I was a bit jaded at Jace the Sculptor ruining what could have been a pretty magical time for monoblack vampires during the zandikar block. Now that black got a walker that dominated in decks she graced I have to say, it feels pretty good. Now I know how all those caw-bladers felt
