What? A decent Leviathan that nobody has looked at..

(After some searching, I find 91 comments on the other printing.)

I understand now, it's because not many people have noticed the Commander set. And seeing as I've just found it tonight, it doesn't surprise me.

I maintain that Sky Swallower Mark 1 is only around to make this thing look good and for flavour reasons. "Hey guys, remember that leviathan nobody played from a set or two ago? Look what the Simic did to it! Who wants to play it now?" "MEMEMEMEMEMEME!"

Bred out the shortcomings of the species' natural form indeed...

Unfortunately it lost 2 points of power and toughness.

The only reason I don't like this card as much as I should is when I play it, I have to say:
"I play Ssssssssssssimic Ssssssssky Ssssssswollower."
It's just a mouthful that I must make sure to promounce properly.
4.5, especially when Riku makes two.

This is a card that I get the feeling that I'm supposed to be afraid of, but it's just never done anything dramatic whenever I've faced off against it.

Flying and trample is nice, but there's some redundancy there. More importantly, this creature has shroud instead of hexproof, which means, for the most part, the worst this thing will be is a 6/6 flying trampler. For 7 mana, I just can't seem to be impressed whenever it manages to hit the table.

Though, with cards like Murkfiend Liege, which make this an 8/8 flying trampler shroud with pseudo-vigilance, I understand that one day, this guy might actually make me understand why I'm supposed to be afraid of it.

I think most of the love this card gets comes from being from Dissension (a set which everyone unarguably likes) and from the Simic guild. It's not so amusing from a gameplay viewpoint, unless you're playing it with Momir Vig. 6/6 shroud is boring.
Possible replacements: Kalonian Behemoth (no flying, but it's a 9/9), Sphinx of Jwar Isle (cute and somewhat useful ability).

The reason people like it is for one certainly your reason but there's also more the nostalgia factor as well. While there weren't any true dominating tier 1 decks right when Ravnica first came out, the Simic deck which used cards like Coiling Oracle and Kodama's Reach to ramp into this monstrosity was one of the best decks in the format hands down. Dealing with this guy in standard was nigh impossible short of a Wrath of God.

He's still a decent dude now, gives a lot of older players heavy nostalgia to the days of original Ravnica, and is still a solid limited bomb in cube-type formats.

Not only a great creature, but is a statement on how much people rely on removal to deal with any decent creature. I find the fact that people can't get 6 power into the air rather pitiful.

I am Simic at heart, but I cant bring myself to like this creature.
Green creatures are usually very big and cost effective.Blue creatures brings evasion and shenanigans.
This card feels like its caught in between,it wants to be a little bit bigger, but it cant, and other simic cards cant help him either.
It also cant match against most powerhouse white angels, black demons and red dragons.
Chances are if this is going to win you a game, any other big trampler or flyer would have done too.
The perfect balance would have been 6/6 for 4GU, 7/7 for 5GU or hexproof instead of shroud.

As much as I love the new Simic with evolve and all that, it really seems they were missing something like this. A big, rewarding, flashy late game creature that BlueGreen is really good at working towards. BlueGreen historically has had the largest creatures, and I think that so far this card is the only one that represents that area of overlap successfully.
