easy way out of tapping 5 creatures you own is by using a Voltiac key.

Followed Footsteps could be nice with this guy, you don't need to untap him (although you could if you want) but it guarantees it can (or at least a copy of it) can attack each turn, also since you get more creatures into the battlefield, you get to increase his P/T

Mirrorweave's best friend. Just be sure to have more creatures than your opponent.

For this block I suppose it was ok, but really really inferior to Beast of Burden, all you need is a Rancor for him to surpass this card by leaps and bounds

@Soulreaver Dan

You only need two other creatures in play. Tap the golem with Elemental mastery and put 3 tokens into play, tap your two other creatures and three tokens, untap alter golem and put six tokens in play... and then you are infinite

This guy could be neat in a Splicer deck. Each splicer brings 2-3 total creatures into play when you summon it, so they give this guy an extra bonus per card. Plus, the splicers themselves aren't usually doing much besides giving bonuses to golems, so they can sit in the back and tap to keep him attacking.

I see potential in this one... Combine it with Thopter Assembly, and you got yourself those five creatures. Plus, they add to its power and toughness. 4/5.

Tokens are a great idea to buff Altar Golem, but Voltaic Key is a simple, cheap workaround for his drawback. Underrated, and can be devastating with token combos (as with Doubling Season).

A remarkable similar equation is quillspike+ devoted druid+ soul's fire=Game
try playing souls fire in response to someone trying to kill the the spike on turn 3.

Play this with Accorder's Shield and Darksteel Plate against an Elf multiplication or token deck. Trample means that your opponent needs do block with a lot to avoid taking serious damage. Accorder's Shield: 3 mana, Darksteel Plate: 5 mana, Altar Golem: 7 mana, the expression on your opponent's face when his 120 elves translate into a 120/120 indestructible monster with trample: priceless.

Rare? Really? This card ruined so many boosters it's not even funny.

1 star cause you can use it as toilet paper.

"Herp derp but you can combo it for infinite tokens"

Yes there is one single card that makes this worth more than toilet paper. Congratulations. Go base an entire deck around it. There's also about 300 cards that can single-handedly stop that combo.

I think I'd rather try to give a Beast of Burden trample than find a way to untap this.

Quest for Renewal. Really good in token decks, just like this dude. Swing all out every turn, untap on their turns to chump/fatty block.

As mentioned by Zetan earlier, Splicers work pretty well with him. Sensor Splicer, at least, contributes two bodies to his P/T and gives him Vigilance so he doesn't suffer from the tapping issue. So yeah, interesting.

It might look cumbersome at first sight, but consider this was the block with untap symbols Untap and cards like Pili-Pala and Gilder Bairn.

deserves a better rating, has EDH written all over it working very well in a token deck
