Honestly though, i wouldn't expect anyone to run leeches, sideboard it, or even have the desire to own it, let alone be near it.

This card made me want to make a sliver deck. It's THAT GOOD.
Mandatory combo sliver: Shadow Sliver

Hilarious win condition. Poison may not be a good effect to put on a lot of cards, but it really works with slivers. If you take any one of the protecting slivers and any one of the stealth slivers (shadow, the one that makes slivers only blockable by slivers) you can achieve a hilarious victory.

A poison player might run or sideboard Leeches, just in case their opponent neutralises the poisonous creatures. Target takes damage equal to the number of removed poison tokens, that can be enough to kill.
Snake Cult Initiation is another great back-up card for if your opponent removes the Virulents, or just use it as a finisher.

even more hilariously evil, the poison effect stacks xD, so when you have 2 or 3 virulent slivers on the field, you can poison your opponent to death in 2 or 3 turns.

Let's sya ur opponent's playing jund (Just for example) Turn 1: Forest (or fancy dual land) Virulent Opponent turn 1: Savage lands Turn 2: Virulent, Virulent, attack (3 poison counters) Opponent turn 2: Putrid leech Turn 3: Heart sliver, attack for 12 poison counters
It may not happen often, but it would be funny.

this guys extreme potential kind of got overshadowed by Scars of Mirrodin with infect. 5/3 Trample haste that deals damage as poison counters for 5 mana.. yeah, you sac it at end of turn, but who cares?

a 1 drop creature that gives an alternate win condition is not good. I demand WotC include automation of all cards so I can win tournaments while at work. .5

Before the New Phyrexia spoilers, I'd say that this was infect's one-drop. Seems that New Phyrexia is giving us some infect one-drops, though.

I have a question. I understand that each virulent sliver stacks with other virulent slivers. However, I recently played against someone that said that with a virulent in play, each sliver in play basically has poisonous X, where X is the number of slivers in play.
He says that since the rules text reads "whenever a sliver deals combat damage to a player, that player gets a poison counter" and each sliver gains this set of rules text thanks to virulent, that the poisonous ability stacks from all other slivers.
Example: Virulent alone hits for 1 poison counter. Virulent and another sliver hit for 4 poison counters. Virulent and 2 other slivers hit for 9 poison counters, etc.
I don't believe this is correct. Otherwise, this would be the most broken card in the history of poison counters.

We definitely need an infect sliver, along with an Eldrazi sliver that grants annhilator 1 to all creatures...but I suppose they would be just a little broken

@endersblade
You're correct. The text states "All slivers have poisonous 1." In order for your friend to be right, the text would have to state "All slivers gain 'All slivers have poisonous 1.'" So they will not exponentially stack like your friend says.

I know I'm going to get some hate for this, but I don't see why Virulent Sliver is so good.
From what I understand, it's not like infect: Infect's ability is that damage dealt to a player is converted into poison counters. The amount of damage they deal is equal to the amount of poison counters given.
Poisonous 1, Virulent Sliver's ability, doesn't do that. Whenever they deal damage to a player, that player gets dealt 1 poison counter, regardless of its power/toughness. Even a 10/11 Sliver Overlord, pumped by Plated Sliver and Sinew Sliver will only deal 1 poison counter. The damage that it deals, however, is still there.
I suppose I shouldn't be so hard on it... It does stack (2 Virulent Slivers = each sliver gets poisonous 2) and it is a 1 CMC sliver.
Personally, I'd rather play Sidewinder Sliver and/or Plated Sliver. Flanking stacks, and I'm happier to attack with a 1/2 than a 1/1 poisonous 1.

If you use the flash hulk combo for vintage just pick 3 of these and a heart sliver and you could win turn 1 with less cards used than 4 disciple of the vault and 5 artifacts that cost x.

I was excited about using this guy for Pauper Infect until I realzied that his poison doesn't scale with his power. If you Invigorate him he still only deals 1 poison damage. That makes him so much worse than Glistener Elf.

Infect 1/1 would be a ten turn clock, equivalent to grizzly bears. But unlike infect, you cant pump this up and get twice the efficiency. Basically you need to hit a player ten times with any of your slivers and have this on the field. Your probably going to win with damage way before that, but poison counters hoses lifegain and some lockdown combos. The benefit of poisonous over infect is that it does not take away your damage win condition, and it adds another one.
A good card to maindeck, though most of the time you wont need it.

Ichthyoallyeinotoxic Sliver Creature -- Sliver Fish
All slivers have Poissonous 1 (Whenever a creature with poissonous deals combat damage to a player, that player gets a blowfish counter. A player with ten or more blowfish counters hallucinates wildly, has a terrible stench, undergoes wild convulsions, and can't take any actions for the rest of the game.)
EDIT: It's a fish joke. Poisson means 'fish' in French. :)

Its poison is pretty terrible (most of the time you'd rather just use a muscle sliver and kill them with damage.) But it only costs one mana, which is important -- slivers have few one-mana drops, and they benefit a lot from getting something out on the first turn (because as situational as its ability is, it still benefits from all your later slivers, too.)
Remember, one huge problem with this is that your opponent can just shut down your poison plan by killing your virulent slivers -- and even if they're at 9 poison counters, doing so will immediately make all those counters meaningless.

This seems great, especially in conjunction with those new m14 cards:
T1: Forest, this T2: Forest, Predatory Sliver, swing for 2 and 1 poison T3: Plains, Hive Stirrings, swing for 4 and 2 poison T4: Plains, Bonescythe Sliver, swing for 16 and 8 poison, and you win off two conditions, except they lose before the poisonous ability has a chance to trigger a second time.
