If you need something out quick on your first turn: snap! If you need something out that will stop your opponent's 10/10 scary thingy with trample at the end of the game when you have 20 lands: snap! if you have just a little manna left over this turn and need something to fill it up: snap! this is possibly the most flexible card I have ever seen!
If only this card could attack, it would be the best card ever!

1 mana for a 1/1 is bad. 2 mana for a 2/2 is bad. 3 mana for a 3/3 is bad. 4 mana for a 4/4 is bad. ... The fact this guy does produce a TON of +1/+1 tokens makes him combo worthy though. Fate Transfer anyone?

It turns out, before Shadowmoor, this was decent. All the power creep has gone to your head, and if a creature without abilities comes out as a 4/4 for anything more than 2, its terrible.
No, back in the day, as Zoah says, this was versatile, not to mention great for affinity and disciple of the vault decks.
I put one in my artifact deck to combo with Sword of the Ages. With Urzatron/Workshop/Tolarian I can get this guy fairly large early then chuck him. Move a Cranial Plating over to him and BOOM!

1 mana for a 1/1 is fair. 2 mana for a 2/2 is fair. 3 mana for a 3/3 is fair. 4 mana for a 4/4 is fair.
Adding abilities to any of those creatures makes them good for their mana cost, but it doesn't make the vanillas bad.
Utter simplicity meets unrivaled utility in a rather cool and innovative way. Not too many cards manage that Come to think of it this is above the curve for black, red and blue creatures. They rarely get 1 for 1 mana to P/T beyond one drops, and I've definitely seen worse drawbacks on cards when they do. Looking forward to maybe seeing this in a core set one day. Maybe M12 with all the Mirrodin counter hijinks stil in standard.

For everyone arguing about the cost: IT DEPENDS ON THE CONTEXT!!!!! A 4/4 artifact creature for 4 is at quite good! A 4/4 green for 4 is pretty bad and below the curve! A 4/4 blue for 4 is pretty good! Also, it depends on the context! In a Stronghold draft, this would me mighty good if it didn't have defender, kinda like Chimeric Mass! Plus, back then before power creep, this might have been alright (I wasn't playing back then, so I wouldn't know (: )! So before you start thinking outright that it sucks, THINK ABOUT CONTEXT!

Also, turn 0 Flash into Protean Hulk into 4 of this + 4 Disciple of the Vault + 4 Phyrexian Marauder. Because nobody else had said it yet.

P.S. Animate Wall. Rolling Stones. Protean Hulk/Disciple of the Vault combo. Storm. Anything that costs 0 or can be sacced easily has at least a bit of combo potential.
And to anyone that thinks this wall is bad, I would love to have you in my draft table because you apparently have no idea how to evaluate cards.
You're giving Nathan Drake too many pointers!
