Very neat.
4 mana for a 4/4 trample is good.
The fact that it has the chance to blow everything up is awesome.
I think I will have lots of fun with this thing.

Hilarious! This will be so much fun in casual, especially if you have a way to recur it and a Pestilence

Play this in a Chance Encounter deck, maybe?

This card can be phenomenal in constructed if you build around it, but probably not too exciting otherwise.

First of all, this card is super annoying for your opponent. Unless they have a 0/5+ creature to block with, there's a risk it will wipe out most of their critters when they do. If they don't like that possibility, they have to let it through and take 4. And they can't chump it, or else they take trample damage plus the detonation risk. And they have to make this decision every turn. I love the dynamic.

But it doesn't have to be annoying for you -- put a lot of undying and indestructible creatures in your deck (Warden of the Wall is pretty good here). It fits quite nicely in the mana curve right below Stuffy Doll. Now your opponent has to decide whether to take 4 now, or risk taking 8 + trample when they block.

Too much chance.

However, with Krark's Thumb (obviously), it becomes a little more viable.

The flavour is really nice and understandable, though.

Mathy1863 took the words right out of my mouth. Pros like me can build a deck around this with indestructible, undying, or scavenge creatures. That makes me wonder, Mathy1863, are you a pro like me?

Zany card, tons of fun, might end up seeing contructed play, will certainly spice up limited.

I.E. my favorite kind of card. Keep 'em coming!

"Seriously, though. If you blow up on me one more time, I'm going to rip whoever touched you to shreds. And I'm going to have a lot of fun doing it."

a 4/4 for 4 mana with trample is already good for me.

If the rig was on the field with ***cidal Seclusion when it died, would it still have lifelink when doing damage while sent to the grave?

Seems like that kind of thing might be dangerous...

When this card was previewed, i knew i was going to hate pulling these from packs. 5 Rigs (including a foil!) so far. I don't see why this is taking up rare slots. :(

Isn't there a card that makes contraptions or something like that in Legacy?

Don't know why this is rated so low...this card is almost literally, a limited bomb. In constructed, it's a weapon of psychological warfare, especially if you're facing down a board full of these. Fail to deal with it in a non-lethal manner (bouncing it, exiling it, enchanting it, blocking it with a defender with 0 power, 4+ toughness), and it'll hit you for damage. Anything else, and you'll run a 50% chance of wrathing your board. Hilariously awesome for casual, decent for aggro, weak against control.

EDIT: And yes, if I'm not mistaken, if it has lifelink (hello, Vault of the Archangel!), you wrath EVERYTHING that isn't indestructable and get a stupid amount of life to boot on its way to the graveyard.

3 Stars for card strength, 5 stars for card awesomeness = 4 stars.

As another chap mentioned, this card really can great in a deck built around it. I see a deck with Stuffy Doll, Phylactery Lich, Manor Gargoyle, Inquisitor's Flail, and Warden of the Wall being nice. Add Altar's Reap so you can blow your Rig up on your dolls even if you're opponent won't let it. Add Mark of the Vampire to either get tons of life from the lich beating, or lifelink the volatile rig so it may heal you for ungodly amounts when it dies.

so wait...where they trying to make a creature with coinflips competitive or not?

sad really, they could have costed it 3, its a rare after all, and would see play in some casual decks.

I agree with some others here that you probably want to play Volatile Rig with the goal being to detonate it. Plan B is beating your opponent to death because they refuse to kill it, of course.

In Standard, pair it with Nearheath Pilgrim and your boardwipe will produce insane life advantage. It may be more amusing to give it lifelink only in response to its demise with Azorius Charm, Moment of Heroism, or Swift Justice. But really, I'm more of a fan of repeatable effects, like Vault of the Archangel or Homicidal Seclusion, as difficult as it would be to build a deck that optimizes the latter.

Then, as mentioned earlier, Stuffy Doll is in the format. And, just in case you forgot, Blasphemous Act is still just sitting around, feeling lonely.

In Modern, equip it with Basilisk Collar, although that might just make it a Batterskull at risk of exploding.

Guys, it's not colourless, it's suicide Red or Black.

Reminds me of that nightmareish Phoenix that explodes when it dies. Man this thing hitting the table will be a PROBLEM for anyone, regardless of what people say.

Perfect enabler with Rakdos, Lord of Riots. In EDH, you hold everyone hostage assuming no one has a 4 toughness creature, you choose who to abuse and either guarantee the cast or force them to gamble that he blows and you have an Artisan of Kozilek that you are about to play for free AND bring the Rig back for next turn

Back off, she's gonna blow! :O

I love these flavorful Izzet cards. They build these crazy contraptions that are potentially powerful, but unstable enough so there's always a chance it'll (literally) blow up in your face.

The same part of me that loves playing with Goblin Test Pilot loves playing with this card. Except this card is actually decent. Well, at least it's decent in RTR Limited. Sure, sometimes it'll blow up in your face, but if you set it up right (which isn't that hard to do), it can set up some awkward combat situations for your opponent (not unlike Creepy Doll in ISD Limited). They don't really wanna take 4, but they don't really want this crappy contraption to nuke their board either ... hmmm ...

Cool card. :) 4.5/5

I freaking love this card. We definitely need more like it!

So much fun!

I laugh out loud every time I play it, in giddy anticipation of its potential. I smirk at my opponents' sighs and moans.

Very fun, especially in multiplayer. People will either kill it because they're behind or protect it because they're ahead. He's virtually unblockable against tribal decks with an establish board position and he's a restraint for decks who are ahead who wish to attack, as they may get wiped for it.

Stalls, might wipe, and is above the curve on size anyway.

@SirLibraryEater: Lifelink is an awesome idea. Gift of Orzhova and the new Whip of Erebos seem to be the best ways to link it up. I'm going to use it with Cutthroat Maneuver, too, but that's a little less useful. I'll have to cast the Maneuver before the first coin flip, because the Rig could be sacrificed immediately after the first coin flip with no chance to respond. I'll only have a 1-in-4 chance of gaining massive life, so I prolly wont be casting the Maneuver if the Rig is my only creature. I might tho. I'll be using it in a deck with Gorgons (five or more toughness) and tons of fight (synergistic with the Rig and the Gorgon's deathtouch and high toughness).

Your inclusion of Palisade Giant is interesting. I guess it's good if you just want to beat face with a 4/4 trampler, but your Rig won't blow up very easily if it's never damaged. If it ever does blow up, everything will be protected, exept for your poor Giant, and you'll gain just as much life... Maybe you could chump block with the Rig and cast Devour Flesh targeting yourself?
