thats wrong: celestial mantle has no lifestealing. this works better with cards that can deal doublestrike and trample

Celestial Mantle does absolutely nothing with this card whatsoever.

madformedusa, you're thinking that the Furnace of Rath would give your Mantled creature double strike, so it would hit twice and thus double your life total twice. But if you look closer, you see that the furnace just doubles the damage- your creature will hit twice as hard, but only once, so the mantle will only trigger once.

Potent and dangerous to use as hell, since it also makes oyur opponent's sources del double damage. A nice finisher to make your lightning bolts deal 6 damage each.

silly but fun with heartless hidetsugu, especially if you can make yourself be at an odd number of life and your opponents at an even (the hidetsugu does damage rounded down, so you will be left at 1).
this with a little URZA'S RAGE!!!!! 20 damage o yeah

An excellent card, one of those "Let's make this interesting," sort of spells. Risky though, since more than one player over the last fifteen years has ended up on the losing end of his own Furnace.

I've definetly been defeated before due to my own furnace. That being said, I wouldn't ever take it out of my deck. Since with multiples, it cause the damage to double twice, two of these would multiply damage by four, and 4 of these plus four Fire Servants means your 3 damage lightning bolt suddenly deals 768 damage. 4.5/5 for being likely to get you killed, but being totally worth it for the lulz :)

furnace of rath plus stuffy doll plus Tower of Calamities, 12 times two to the doll makes 24 times two is 48 to the player, yayz!

My roommate and I had a discussion about the affects of an opponents Drain Life, played in sequence with Furnace of Rath. Is the life gained affected by the number of spent or by the number of damage dealt?
MrDelicious84
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0)(1 vote)
@Izual: the wording on Drain Life is "You gain life equal to the damage dealt," as opposed to "You gain x life." Therefor your lifegain will be doubled the same way the damage is doubled.

One thing I learned by watching people play this and using it myself, and this may be a no brainer for most of you but im not trying to educate a pro, watch your timing on playing this cause it can easily backfire. I watched my noob friend drop it with no creatures out or nothing. He died before his next turn when everyone decide to attack him first... sigh... naturally after i type all this i notice others have pointed it out already. Well tough noogies. It bears repeating so neiner neiner.

I think you mean 52 damage. with furnace shivan meteor doubles as it hits mogg maniac, and mogg maniac doubles that damage as it hits its target.

The people who are calling the guy out on celestial mantle are thinking too hard. It's not really a combo, but it is good synergy. What's happening with the furnace? damage is getting doubled. So, what's the best way to stay alive? To consistently double your life total, of course.

@channelblaze: This exact scenario happened to me during an EDH tournament. The opponent had Hidetsugu as his general, and used Mage's Contest to get himself at an odd number of life.

This makes me wonder why losing life is supposedly strictly better than damage to a player.
The idea would be to have en-Kors protecting yourself from attack, Pariah protecting yourself from targeted damage, Shaman en-Kors protecting other creatures, Darksteel Plate protecting the Mogg Maniac... ANY amount of damage done to you will not only NOT do any damage to you, but will also puke itself back to your opponent twice-fold. Two Furnaces means four-fold. Attacking for five means death.
You can hasten the process by using cards that deal X damage to ALL creatures in play (such as Slagstorm, Blasphemous Act or Chain Rection)... and even then all you need is a Mogg Maniac, Furnace and say only two or three en-Kors (3 damage to two en-Kors and a Maniac means 9 damage initially, then doubled to 18 by the Furnace, THEN doubled to 36 when it hits your opponent.) And THIS is pretty awesome AFTER the rule changes for the Furnace; before you were allowed to double the damage every time you redirected damage between en-Kors (because it's being "assigned" in each redirect), so a single damage meant death.
Poison damage is the only thing you need to worry about, but I'm sure there are ways to deal with it... I'm open to ideas on how to handle Poison damage in this situation...

In my mono red burn deck I got all four of these out with four Fire Servant's out and a four Spitemare's and when I played Blasphemous Act It hit for to each of the Spitemare's 104 so 104*4 is 416 all redirected to my friend who didn't want me to kill him because he just made a new deck and wanted to test it out. The look on his face was priceless.

I bet it works pretty well with mana flare. turn three flare into turn four this with something like blasphemous act or pyroclasm to keep opposing creatures at minimum. Then just throw things like lightning bolt, incinerate, and searing spear at your opponents face. it only takes four three-damage burn spells to kill an opponent with one of these out.
Personally I like it. Biased 5/5

I just saw this card and immediately bought it. Why?
Think about it. Guttersnipe out ( 2 damage to each opponent when you cast instant or sorcery)
4-5 Lightning / Chain Lightning bolts. and have one or two Rift bolts on suspent.
Next turn comes. those lightning bolts turn into 6, rift bolt 6, Gutter snipe 4.
so 4 Lightning bolts is 6 = 24 dmg.
plus the 4 damage with each of the 4 is 16.
plus the one or two rift bolts , 6 or 12 depending.
That is game if you play with 20 or 30 life. lol this is working really well in my deck its that card that says "overkill" double ALL?

A good friend of mine and I were having a discussion on favroite cards. The furnace was one of my first responces, but I cant fit it into a deck well enough where I dont die from it. So, he being a better magic player, helped me create a winner with many combos and good synergy. That deck even almost took a in house legacy tourny in my local cardshop (darn you prot red finalist). It ran like...
It carries the possibility of a 1 turn kill but its nearly impossible. However it works like this if you go second or want someone out of a big multiplayer game... draw, play mountain, rite of flame1, rite of flame2, rite of flame3, Furnace, Mogg maniac, lightning axe your mogg.
I've come around to this card. Play lopsided creatures, consider repercussion, and ATTACK FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE

Dangerous but great card. Cornerstone of my red deck for years. This + Repercussion + Pyroclasm / Earthquake / Inflame — make your opponents really suffer for those creatures!
I once won a large group game in a spectacular way with this: 2 Furnaces and a Repercussion out. I played Pyroclasm, then Inflame. That's 16 to each creature, and 64 to each player for each creature they control. I had 0 creatures, everyone else had at least one.

Oh man. This is perfect! I even have this card in multiples! How have I not seen it before?!?!?!
This is going into my Tajic EDH when I get home. I used to have gratuitous violence and found it wasn't really pulling it's weight (not that many creatures in the deck, lots of burn and board wipes). I also used to have inquisitor's flail in the deck, but found it didn't add enough, only being good on Tajic, and being a piece of garbage compared to jitte (not its fault really, but it was a pretty easy swap).
With this card, I can make even more use of Tajic's indestructibility, and make my burns into epic game-enders. Browbeat - take 10 damage or give me 3 cards. Earthquake - kill all creatures without flying (most likely), and deal 2x damage to each player. Tajic gets through due to no blockers left for double damage as well. Breath of darigaaz - becomes a monster board wipe + 8 damage to each player.
End the game in an epic blaze. Play this on a turn where I know I can get battalion. Play it when my opponent has few creatures (particularly when they are not a red deck).

Quick question on this. In Commander, does that mean the commander would assign twice the commander damage? Or no?
