Dark Confidant, the Enchantment.

Though much, much harder to kill than Bob.

Harder to kill than Bob, the Dark Confidant (much harder, as DonRoyale has stated), but slower and can't attack. You'd have trouble getting rid of it too, if you were running low on life. Still, good card.

Almost strictly worse than bob and phyrexian arena; in legacy and vintage this will never see play. Also, the reason why Bob is good is...

1) It's less mana than similar card drawing engines like necropotence and arena.
2) It can swing for 2.
3) It's a creature so you can kill it whenever.

Even in standard this is tricky to use; you have to constantly use library manipulation like jace's brainstorm to avoid losing too much life.

Dark Confidant is better which you can remove if you're ouching too much with it on the battlefield. Phyrexian Arena is still the best(on my opinion).

As mdakw576 stated, either Phyrexian Arena or Dark Confidant are normally preferable to this card.

I think this could have been far more interesting for 1Black only.

Seems like it should at least match bobs cost or cost BB.
The loss is incomparable to everyone's favorite arena, and the fact that if you run a playset you risk bolting yourself is kinda bleh.
Still, scry and this is a winner in limited.

I can just imagine the many ways this card can go horribly wrong.
Say you have this card in play and it fetches... oh, say... Gleemax.

It gets 5 simply because of the real world flavor text.

Haha ya, I would hate to flip over an Autochthon Wurm or Emrakul. Phyrexian Arena is so much better, I'll pay one life for my fatties thank you very much!
Ogrillion
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Oh, you guys, with your hypothetical situations. Who cares if Gleemax + this = a bomb? If you build your deck like that, you're going to lose an awful lot of games and it has nothing to do with the cards. Dark Tutelage is weak in limited because they've taken out Consume Spirit in M11 (possibly because of the synergy) and there aren't very many viable lifegain cards to refuel you - it might do well if it was paired up with Elixir of Immortality, but there's nothing really really good in mono-black. In constructed, it would be marvellous if it was teamed up with any X lifegain spell and some cheap beats. Until its proven that mono-black aggro isn't viable in the next standard, save your hatin'.

Great for standard and now extended since they lost bob. Easier to splash than arena, if played in UB with jace, you can effectively negate any kind of damage by making sure that your top is always a land. Crystal ball also. I tested it in a black aggro deck, turned out to be just peachy.

My only issue is that, unlike bob, you can't kill this if you are low on life.

I certainly prefer phyrexian arena, but this has it's uses (like, idk, card advantage) too. (and it's standard)

Would be funny (most likely in limited)

"Darn, flipped emrakul..."

cloneffect
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
It's pretty bad. Almost always worse than phyrexian arena. Some kind of repeatable scry effect would make it tolerable rather than just bad - I guess that means crystal ball. But even then it's not great. If mono black control literally has no other way to draw cards, I suppose, but why you wouldn't splash blue for jace (either one), I don't know. That's got to be better than running the risk of handing your opponent some seriously good burn without having to pay for it. 2.5/5.
Divisionbyzer0
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Everyone is mis-appraising this card. That's fine by me. I'll run it and win with it. It is clearly not a card that you can just use blindly but it is not at all bad. At 2b it is more splashable than arena. At lose life = to cmc you can play with it to minimize your life loss. It also works well in ub, b aggro, and rb aggro. To anyone who says you can't kill it, they must not be familiar with cards like war priest of thune, naturalize, maelstrom pulse, o-ring, qasali pridemage, acidic slime, nature's cleansing, aether tradewinds, into the roil, regress etc. A mono black mage can't kill it, but everyone else but red has some way of dealing with it.

And theres always lifegain to offset: lone missionary, baneslayer angel, basilisk collar, behemoth sledge, corrupt, consume spirit, tendrils of corruption, vampire nighthawk, kalastria highborn.

All the cards I listed are good enough to play in standard. Give it a shot and you won't be dissapointed.

Great loss of life for cards should be red. Black should prefer a slow and painful death for your enemies, not a fast one for yourself.

So much hate on this deck. I've tested it in a deck with Crystal Ball, Preordain and Conundrum Sphinx. Throw in some control and it works out alright. You do need a lot of mana though.

Anyone who builds a Suicide Black deck with heavily costed fatties is a moron. Stop with the hypothetical situations, they're not helpful.

I don't want to sound mean or anything, but it's the truth. In decks that are made with this card in mind, it's an amazing card, just like good ol' Bob Confidant was.

Holy son of a bleep-blob, everyone's complaining about how you could lose so much life when you pair this with anything CMC 3 or higher. Solution: Stop putting them in your deck. Use cost-efficient cards like Bloodghast, Pulse Tracker, and Vampire Lacerator. You'll be drawing lands a third of the time anyways.
Trust me, I've been molested by this card and Tumble Magnet, Lavaclaw Reaches, and f-tons of one-mana burn. This card is not to be under-estimated with.

Yes this card is essentially strictly worse than Phyrexian Arena, and in almost every deck that would consider this type of card worse than Dark Confidant. It's still a fine card in the right circumstances, you don't just have to compare it to some of black's poster card drawers. I could come up with a bulleted list for why I would play Necropotence instead of this. That doesn't make this bad, it just makes Necro really good.

Come on people! Obvious combo with Jace the mind sculptor. Just brainstorm to put a land on top every time. This should be in every u/b deck.

Alternatively, it could be great in a b/r super agro deck. Nothing but one drop goblins, Memnites and kuldotha rebirth. life loss even helps Death's shadow, which is a one drop. If every card is a one or zero drop than it is better than phyrexian arena.
EggShen
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Yup, if you build around this properly, you can actually lose less life than you would with the Arena. X spells are always nice. Things like Everflowing Chalice, Chimeric Mass, the Zenith's, Exsanguinate, Etc. I have a deck that runs three, and unless I'm playing against super fast aggro, I don't hesitate to put out more than one. Card drawing is good.

It's not hard to build a deck with nothing but low costed black. I have a deck with this and most cards in it are 2 - 3, and i think i have one card that is 6 and thats it.

No thats not true i do have venser's journal. But once you have that out and your hand gets bigger by 2 each turn the loss of life doesn't seem all that bad.
Clanker
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Ok, this card was just MADE for very low mana curve decks (such as Vampires - Goblins Etc Etc). I mean Goblin decks have 2-3 most mana curve, and Vampires (well at least in MY Vampire deck) have a 2 highest CMC and Dark Tutelage being 3 CMC. So it just keeps your hand full of good cards that may do 1-3 damage but with Kalastria Highborn, you'll be gaining 2-4 life per turn.

Why is this so much worse than Dark Confidant? I mean, you can still get it out turn 1 with Dark Ritual. Is it the enchantment part that makes it harder to kill for you?
reapersaurus
★★★☆☆ (3.4/5.0) (8 votes)
Every other card that it a creature version of an artifact or enchantment, people pooh-pooh it because "it just dies to removal".

Yet, this enchantment version of Dark Confidant is summarily dismissed.

WTF?

It would be nice if Magic wannabees were consistent - they so slavishly follow the "experts" and the tourney advice, it's pathetic.
I guarantee, if tourney players stuffed this card in their decks and touted its card advantage, people would be falling over themselves to follow suit and the card's $ value would skyrocket.

Newsflash - Dark Confidant dies to removal.
And a 2/1 without evasion is not exactly a scary creature on the field.
Most other cards, people would be arguing that Dark Confidant is strictly WORSE than the enchantment version.
RikerBlake
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@reapersaurus do you even know how Dark Confidant is played? Dark confidant is better because it costs less, and you can kill it when the life loss became too much. Newsflash - Black can't destroy enchantments!

This should be used in so many decks, and crazily isn't.
{B}? Should be crazy fun, with this in an opening hand you can have a jump on the board control since the opponent is probably ramping or messing with lands that come out tapped.
{R/B} Burn? I'm sorry did you want to have creatures? Because if this drops, you won't.
{U/B} Control? This card SHOULD be in just about EVERY deck. This should go in over Jace Beleran You can sit on a Spell pierce or deprive when you go for mass burn finishers like Exsanguinate. Alternatively you can leave Titans in there, and just hold onto a Preordain to drop with this. If you use scry or Jace, the Mind Sculptor a lot already, why would you be hesitant at all about using the card???

I'm pretty shocked that I'm just starting to see this in tournament decks, and it's about to rotate out.

Especially in standard, it is a dangerous card. Where everything is so reactive and goblin guides are rather prevalent, you do not want to be helping thew red decks out, and since Titans are pretty much standard in every deck, you are running the risk of a lot of damage. On the other hand, I have played one game with it and Beleren Active, and the cards I was drawing were ridiculous. I think its perfect for a deck like vampires, and considerable for decks like (U/B)/Esper control or MBC, even though I think you really need jace 2.0's brainstorm ability to make it happen, who, if you haven't heard, has gone the way of the dodo. And also, Confidant is better than this mostly because in the formats where it is played sensei's divining top and Brainstorm are also played, so you have spectacular library manipulation and can avoid most of the damage that you are taking from it.

i really love cards like this. cards you look at and say, wtf? i was really disappointed in this card when i first got it. all you have to remember is almost all cards fit somewhere. i pulled this at the same time i pulled alot of the zendikar vampires. i was working on a aggro vamp deck and decided to put this in. i figured since nothing in the deck costed over three and the child of night and vampire nighthawk have lifelink, it wouldn't b to big a deal. how right i was. whats better is lightning bolt and fireball7 only have cmc of 1. If i play this, unless it is dealt with i win. the card advantage is staggering and almost impossible for my opponent to recover from. the life loss is almost nothing, especially when 36% of the deck is lands.

@ cheza- wtf r u talking about? this fits black perfectly. trading life for advantage is part of what black does. black can take it because of all the lifegain black has. black uses any resource for victory, even its own life.

1Black Dark Confidant: $ 49.99 each.

At the beginning of your upkeep, reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost.

2Black Dark Tutelage: $ 0.49 each.

At the beginning of your upkeep, reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost.

I think we have a winner.

People like Bob because he has legs. Both of these cards have shortcomings; Dark Confidant falls to all kinds of burn and removal, but he can be turned off if you need to monitor your life total by just killing him. Whereas Tutelage requires specific removal, but is harder to turn off.

However, in a format with Sensei's Divining Top, you really see why Bob is a $50 card. There's a reason the Top is 1 cmc and stacks itself on top of your library, folks.

I am currently putting together all of the cards that fall into two kinds:

Those like Necropotence,
and
Those like Solitary Confinement.

So far I have Immortal Coil, Lich, Nefarious Lich, Phylactery Lich (need a creature), Lich's Tomb, Lich's Mirror, Phyrexian Unlife, Phyrexian Arena, Norn's Annex, Dark Confidant and Personal Sanctuary.
I think in this special arrangement, Phyrexian Negator is better than Obliterator. Could be wrong, though.

Also considering Platinum Angel and Persecutor Demon.

Add this to the list. Tell me, did I miss anything? :) I can't lose, right? :)

OK-

Strictly worse than Phyrexian Arena in mono-black, yes. You're drawing the same amount of cards, but potentially paying more life.

However, this is amazing for casual decks that would splash black for Bob (and wouldn't use the Arena because of the BlackBlack in its casting cost), but can't afford him since a playset of him costs a testicle and a half. Yes, it's slower than Bob, but this being casual the 1 difference wouldn't matter much.

Life for card advantage is usually a good trade, and you could run it with a lot of lifegain. Black is a great color for lifegain, and even more so if you run White/Black. And it doesn't work with Personal Sanctuary. Why do people ever mistake "life loss" for "damage"?

wow, an immense level of hate here. And no it is not strictly worse than phyrexian arena. With a Sensei's Divining top or a Mirri's Guile this is actually better than phyrexian arena. Since you'll be putting a land on the top every time and losing no life. Besides the deck that would run this would peak out at CMC 3 anyway.

GCAcul's got the right idea; this is utterly outclassed by Phyrexian Arena. If you're using shenanigans to stack your topdeck with land, well, you could be using those shenanigan card slots more effectively.

I don't know about this card. Bob gives you the effect a turn earlier and beats people up, on top of being the only creature (until just recently with blood scrivener) to have repeatable card draw that's splashable on a 2-drop.

I get that this is splashable and cheap, but I'd really take arena over this except under circumstances where the other color has worse card draw; which if you do it right, is rare. (Blue does well, green can do well, white does well on cantrips now-a-days plus has land tutoring, which is kinda good. Red does okay on filtering.)

I think that this guy really suits casual, but that's where it'd be less likely to see play due to it's hefty drawback for those kinds of decks.

This card obviously works well in a fast, low cost black deck, but the art screams at me to put this in my rather high cost midrange demon-faustus deck. I don't really like the idea of drawing a lord of the pit and losing 7 life on turn 4.

It also gives me reason to ask why Dark Confidant is a 50 dollar card and this is 25 cents. Now, if Dark Confidant had Bloodgift Demon's static ability, I might see why...

Interesting variation on Phyrexian Arena. Note: the Arena allows you to draw a card, whereas with this you put the card directly into your hand, just like Dark Confibob. Gets around cards like Spirit of the Labyrinth.
