Splashable Boomerang. 3.5/5

It's not a boomerang, but with a turn one llanowar elves or arbor elf it can make a fine impersonation of one.

You haven't known tempo advantage, until you boomerang a land on turn two.

How appropriate name for this card, it's really a regress for Blue bouncing cards.

Hard to tell if it's better or worse than Æther Tradewinds. Strictly equivocal.

Strictly worse than Resounding Wave.

I got two of these at the prerelease and they were gold. The levelers in RotE HATE bounce. There's nothing like watching the opponent sink 2+ turns and 10+ mana into leveling something, only to have it bounced and return as a 1/1. I even bounced my own Emrakul's Hatcher. Very versatile, and the "permanent" part really makes this. 4/5.

Unsummon is better, but I like how this can target anything.

Weak. A Boomerang this ain't and it will never be a worthy replacement. Just like Cancel-Counterspell.

Those who would rate this card poorly are somewhat - if not completely - missing the point. Rise of the Eldrazi was designed as a limited-centric set designed to be played entirely by itself. In RoE, bounce is significantly, significantly more powerful than it is outside of RoE. The developers of course knew this quite well, and to my mind had two choices. They could either not print a bounce spell at all, which is a simple but completely uninteresting cop-out, or make it slightly more expensive to bring it in line with its increased potency in the format.

Regress fulfills its function beautifully, and is perhaps even first-pickable in Rise draft. Before giving this card such a poor rating, one should first experience the joy of regressing a fully levelled up creature or spawn-generated Eldrazi. Solid 4.5/5 given the format.

Also known as "GTFO". Useful for bouncing immense creatures, Planeswalkers, lands, Eldrazi... seriously. It is not Boomerang, but is equally useful for only 1 more CC. Underestimate the bounce at your peril :D

BenUffindell summed it well. It's very good in rote limited. Outside of it, however, it's a crappy boomerang, and if you want a bounce for standard, into the roil is probably better.

Strictly worse than Consign to Dream.

Yay? Now I have to wait until turn three to start bouncing thier lands. I'm sad. I want Boomerang back. But hey, this is less color specific. Great for GreenBlue.

I'd almost always rather have Into the Roil, unless I want to set them back one turn on land.

@BenUffindell

Solid 4.5 given the format? 4.5? No. Just no. 4 stars and up are reserved for those powerful cards you build a deck around or the huge beatsticks you push through your opponents' line of defense.

You don't build a deck around an overpriced boomerang. It's a trick you do to buy a turn to play your real 4.5/5 star card, like perhaps an ultimatum or a planeswalkers ultimate.

2.5-3 stars at most, and that is not a "poor" rating. It's where all these utility spells belong. You can't rate every card 4.5 or 5 because it was good in draft.

One time I used this and Resounding Wave to constantly bounce a Jund player's second land. By the time he actually could keep lands in play, I had two Sphinx of Jwar Isle and a Wall of Denial on the board. Many luls occured.

I'd much rather use Into the Roil or Aether Tradewinds.
That said, if you play blue/green and a mana critter survives turn 1, it's a turn 2 land bounce.

I agree wholeheartedly with BenUffindell. Given the set, it's an amazing card and it's way too underrated for what it can do for you in limited. I know I've had my share of losses against this card in drafts and sealed. And in casual constructed, it's lulzy with Bloodbraid Elf. "Bounce that tri-land why don't you."

Honestly, anyone posting a "strictly worse than" comment is akin to running around posting "FIRST!!!!".

Exactly what creature is it featured in this Regress' Card Art? It looks insanely cool and would suit my deck based on its appearance.

I DON"T UNDERTAND WHAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT! THIS CARD IS AMAZING!
if at any time your opponent misses a land drop... boom EVEN MORE MANA SCREWED!!!
planeswalker... return to your hand so i can counter it next turn and annoy you
fauna shaman, oh sorry your deck is 1 to 2 turns slower
manland, oh sorry your land comes into play tapped next turn
THIS CARD IS AWSOME 5/5
so much versatility for its cost, all you have to do is wait for that lotus cobra into a turn 3 baneslayer and there you go, game over!

Ben's comment is totally true -Regress rocks RoE limited. It counters three of the major set mechanics: Eldrazi, levellers and totem armour. The second I saw the key mechanics for the set I immediately looked for an Unsummon card, saw Regress sitting at 3 cmc, and /sighed knowing that everything would still be ok for my planned totem-armour/levellers deck. Having a faster bounce card like Unsummon in the set would have hurt it alot.

As for constructed, with Disperse in the format now, the addition of land bounce for one extra mana isn't so appealing, but there are still rare non-basic lands that you could sideboard this in against, namely Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and the Worldwake man-lands. So your opponent has a Celestial Colonnade out with Terra Eternal on the board. So what? Bounce gets around indestructibility. Bounce can be especially handy against those lands, because they come in tapped, so it really pushes them back! Regress is strictly worse off, however, against common non-basic lands like Teetering Peaks that basically want to be bounced. Thats a shame.

I gave abacus' comment five stars at first, but the more I think about it, the less I agree with it. Cards like Pongify get 4.5 stars simply for being awesome, even though they are utility cards.

Seeing as I one of the first sets I bought was RoE, I'd have to say that I loved this card when playing other RoE decks, but I can see why it's subpar in comparison to other alternatives. I may still run it casually though.

@Lunarchef : You'll probably never see this comment, but I'm pretty sure the creature featured is a 4/4 red Hellion token from Hellion Eruption.

"Strictly worse" than something means that in no given situation can you think of a reason to play card X over card Y. sometimes you have to come up with convoluted corner cases, but in this situation it's pretty easy.

Regress is not strictly worse than resounding wave simply because it can be played in mono blue EDH, and resounding wave can not. (not to say that you should ever play either.)

@allmighty_abacus: Wrong. A card is not rated by its function, but by how well it does that function. By that logic, something like Ancestral Recall and Time Walk would be rated around 2.5 and 3 because you can't build a deck around them.

Nope. Boomerang. The extra Blue is worth it, especially in mono blue.

NOT strictly worse than Resounding Wave, can be run in EDH decks without the requisite color identity for the Wave. Also I'm pretty sure there's something that does bad things to cards in the hand with cycling...
