Mosstodon and vulturous zombie is all sorts of oddness with this card. Vinelasher kudzu being the obvious staple followed by phytohydra, and of course khalni garden.

Seven is ALOT more than six, and it takes alot more landfall triggers to have creatures that are big enough to not die in combat. I'd honestly rather play the faster, and safer Baloth.

This card is alot better than you might think. I mostly play casual multi-player games, and this guy is a bomb.
Even at the prerelease this weekend when I got him in sealed I could consistently get him out at least every other game.

Also it is really funny to see your opponent face-palm when you drop this guy.

At worst you get around seven chump blockers and a 5/5. At best you win. if you don't like this card, sell it.

I remember saying a while ago (when I saw Utopia Tree) that if Wizards made a plant lord, that I would make that deck. Well, they called my bluff. Now I have to make the deck. It'll have Phytohydra, Sprouting Phytohydra, Vulturous Zombie, all the other nasty plant things from the Golgari. It's silly and Constructed laughs at it, but it seems like it would be a fun kitchen table thing.

Okay, i just found the coolest way to play this guy. 3 words:

RITE OF REPLICATION

Cast it on this guy, and a copy will come into play, with bonus tokens. Cast a kicked Rite on him, and if you only have 9 lands (the minimum required to kick Rite of Replication) you will get 45 plant tokens. the next land you play, all of them get 6 +1/+1 counters.

Feel free to blither now.

I really like this guy, but then, I've always been a fan of plant life in it's many incarnations. However, my biggest problem with him is that there aren't many plants in the game of Magic, at least not many that have too much playability. Most of the plant cards in the game are walls of some variety, and the ones that aren't tend to have another color attached, making it extremely difficult to make a mono-green plant deck, which just seems totally wrong to me. In Worldwake though, he obviously works well with the Khalni Garden and the Snapping Creeper, but that only makes him the king of the playground. Both other plant cards in the set are fairly weak, and even in Standard, the only other plant is the Mosstodon, and he's fairly useless in any deck that could utilize this lord. I mean, honestly, considering what Zendikar is about, you'd have thought that a majority of the basic green creatures would be plants, given that the place is JUNGLE world wrought with animated relics, lands, and elementals.

I really like this card, but it has some down sides for me. Being 7 to cast you will have about 1/3 of your lands out, so you will get 7 0/1's and land fall to make them 1/2's but it would best to run mana prod to get this guy out faster say turn 4 or 5 but he pays to play late to get more tokens and pay to play early to make a few big ones. He can be great if you play him a just the right time but it seems hard to do. Combos great with doubling season.

Watch your opponent cry when you drop two of these and five lands with Warp World. 10 +1/+1 counters on 10 tokens? Uhh, YEAH.

Best part is, you can choose the order of resolution; have the plant tokens trigger first, then the landfall trigger.

The aforementioned Rite of Replication is better when you have the mana to be playing it, though. He's fun in the Warp World deck, though.

I think this guy is better than he looks. No it's not very competitive but a great casual card. If you hard cast this guy with 7 lands in play you are getting 8 creatures for 7 mana. For one drop more Verdant Force has a bigger body but makes you wait for your tokens and gives your opponent a chance to get rid of him before he can even make them. Plus if things go well he can grow your tokens for you. If your playing a landfall deck then you should use cards that let you play more land every turn for your mana acceleration, that wont hurt this guys token production and will let you grow your tokens faster. And with the right lands in your deck you shouldn't have to worry about not having lands to play. ex) Ghost Town or Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

I just tried this guy in a monogreen landfall deck and it went like this. I played the avanger and he came into play with 8 tokens. My opponent managed to kill 2 tokens before my next turn. On my turn I played 2 lands and cast Overrun and atacked with 38 points of trample damage. Game over.

Although I can see the connections to Verdant Force, Vinelasher Kudzu and Deranged Hermit), I still don't like the overall card design.

1) The mana-cost seems random. The CIP/ETB effect would change with higher / lower casting cost. So it feels like having a Mire's Toll with cmc 3 just to show the power of the effect. Even with a lower cmc, I would have get it.

2) I hate tokens with counters. Like Chronozoa, it's a complete mess if you don't use the special token cards. Which one is tapped and if I create different tokens with a different number of counters, it get's nearly unplayable.

3) If you get 2 abilities on the same card and only one of them is a CIP ability, I always ask myself, why not swap them. A Deranged Hermit is a good card design, because he gives you 4 tokens for a cmc 5 sorcery-like card. And if you pay an additional cost, you'll get an Gaea's Anthem. The Avenger of Zendikar tries to copy this behavior in a more powerful way, but fails.

Let's see: If it would have had cmc 5 instead, it would feel like a Deranged Hermit or a Thelonite Hermit. It would have created at about 5 0/1 plants instead of 4 2/2 saprolings like the hermits do.The hermits are extreme valuable, if you use it with cards like Pandemonium or with haste (Fires of Yavimaya or In the Web of War - attacking with 4x 4/2 saprolings). They can generate an instantaneous power on the battlefield, able to block a a horde of weenies or one big fattie, killing the attacker(s). The Avenger of Zendikar just creates some useless blockers (but maybe some more).

The hermits grant a permanent bonus but do not really interact with the tokens... that's their drawback. Usually, when you play magic and you try to combine cards, you would like to see 1 card producing masses of tokens and combine it with another card granting a huge bonus. Having 2 cards that do both things in a mediocre way, feels quite lame. So neither Verdeloth the Ancient nor Nemata, Grove Guardian could replace the true love for the Verdant Force.

This is really good and should see more play. I personally think that it's better than Rampaging Baloths. Yes, I know Baloths comes out a turn earlier and is stronger, but this has a much bigger effect. Rampaging Baloths is a lightning rod for removal, and if they take it out right after you play it, it's gone, no tokens. Avenger of Zendikar gives you the tokens right away, so you're hurt less if it's removed. Plus, each land after the Avenger gives at least +7 p/t, instead of the Baloths, which gives you +4. And it's easier to deal with a few 4/4s than several 2/3s, 3/4s, etc. Both of them are really good in a ramp deck though. Both get a 5/5 from me. I love sandbagging active Khalni Heart Expeditionss and then playing this and the Baloths.

Cheza, I don't feel like you are giving this card the review it is worth.

1. Yes, 7cmc is now on the slow side of things, especially in today's standard, but it is exactly what this card should be priced at. Having a 6cmc with it would be VERY good and the card would be potentially unbalancing. Having it at 5 would make it unbelievably good. For comparison, look at two recently (re)printed cards: Siege-gang Commander and Howl of the Night Pack. Siege-gang has ALWAYS been a great card, but at 5cmc it comes in with 3 1/1s and is a 2/2 with a semi-expensive ping. HOTNP is costed at 7 for 7 2/2 tokens. Yet, you think that Avenger would be fair if it cost the same as Siege gang? It's already directly better than HOTNP, so obviously there's no contention on that point. Having Avenger at 5 would make in an auto-include for any green deck capable of playing it, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

2. Really? Buy some dice and bring them with you when you play with tokens. Trust me, it's much easier and you don't need to worry about the printed, 'legal' token cards. (Although I'm not sure how having those cards makes dealing with counters any easier. >_>)

3. If you switched the abilities he would be directly worse than Rampaging Baloths and would never, ever see play. A 0/1 for landfall at 7cmc? No way!

I really like this card and it will definitely take the place of the baloths in my warp world deck. I hope you can appreciate how good it is too! :D

INCREDIBLY underrated. Yes, it costs a lot. In Landfall deck with tons of manaramping (as it should!), that really doesn't matter. Like, at all. I run a GW Landfall deck, tends to go like this:

Turn 1: Land, Amulet of Vigor
Turn 2: Land, Khalni Heart Expedition
Turn 3: Land, Harrow, drop a new Expedition, activate old Expedition, drop a Ruin Ghost
Turn 4: Land, drop the Avenger, activate the expedition and ruin ghost's ability

= 7 * 3/4 plant tokens on turn 4. More if any of the land you dropped were Khalni Gardens.

No, it's not the fastest deck ever, nor is it perfect, but it's won me a good amount of games. A fetchland the next turn pretty much guarantees a win, assuming you've survived to turn 4 (not always so easy against some decks these days =/)

sure, it's a bit expensive, but it'll be worth it since you gain x plant tokens for 4 turns, then for every land played, they all get +1/+1 counters.

And with a green deck, mana wont be such a big problem.

@ Sanderleet & DonRoyale

You're both missing an important point with that Warp World strategy. Avenger of Zendikar's ability spawns 0/1 plants for every land you control ON THE BATTLEFIELD (before he is "cast") and his landfall ability triggers for every land played after he's ON THE BATTLEFIELD (after he is "cast")

So no, if you Warp World with 10 land and 2 Avenger of Zendikars you do not get 20 Plants with +20/+20 counters. You have to decide after Warp World which order you play the cards you draw in. You can play 5 lands, 2 Avengers, 5 lands to get 10 0/1 Plant creature tokens then add 10 +1/+1 counters to them, or play 2 lands, 2 Avengers, 8 lands to get 2 0/1 Plant creature tokens and add 16 +1/+1 counters to them, or you can mix it up and put 3 lands, 1 Avenger, 7 lands, 1 Avenger to get 3 Plants with 7 +1/+1 counters and 10 0/1's with no counters.

But you can't have all the lands be in play both before, and entering the battlefield after the Avenger of Zendikar enters the battlefield.

This guy is a great example of how a some cards aren't fully realized until after some good time goes by after sets are released. I know this guy doesn't see tourney play but in casual this guy is a powerhouse. He'll almost always get you 4-7 plants depending how fast you can ramp. And with Khalni Garden, he definitely would be good. It would be cool to see a deck using 4 AoZ, 4, Llanowar Elves, 4 Ruin Ghost, 4 Khalni Garden, and 4 Snapping Creeper. Throw in a good 6 Sac. lands, and you got yourself a solid Casual Deck.

Don't write him off, yet. A 5/5 that comes in with around 7 plants (if played the hard way)? If nothing else, 7 0/1 creatures can chump block. In my Rhys the Redeemed EDH, the turn after this guy came on, Rhys doubled them, and I played a land into a Rampant growth. 14 2/3 plants are harder to deal with.

That being said, it's a tough card to rationalize. Green's mana accel is traditionally creature based, but this guy's effect can't be maximized unless you play lots of lands. Seems kind of self-defeating. That being said, it rocks in its niche, and with Explore, Harrow, and Rampant Growth, as well as Walking Atlas and others, it has potential.

Plus, the new hydra card- Avenger + 7 plants= free hydra

A good creature based replacement for Howl of the nightpack. Both are 7 drop green cards that get you Immediate tokens, excet avenger of zendikar is a come into play creature not a sorcery and it works with any lands not just forests making it good for even mullti-color decks and not just mono green. This guy is perfect as a come into play creature based mass token generator that gets better as you play more lands without becoming any more expensive. I feel silly pointing this out, but he also combos with both of doubling season's effects taking full advantage of token/counter based synergy. Great card all around!

If an Avenger of Zendikar was to gain phasing, would someone be able to make a huge army of plant tokens?
teamfireyleader

@Aronomizer: Unfortuneatly no. Phasing in does not count as entering the battlefield. It is just phasing in. So you would not get extra tokens each turn. As far as I know (and my information comes from a very unreliable source) the way you think it works is how it originally worked and they errated it so phase in was just phase in later.

That is absolutely NOT true. When you Warp World into Avenger of Zendikar and say, 10 lands, they enter the battlefield simultaneously. The Avenger sees 10 lands on the battlefield when it comes into play, and it also sees 10 lands coming into play. You get ten 10/11 plant tokens when you stack the etb abilities properly, no question.

@FoulCaptain: You're demonstrating your poor understanding of the stack. Even if you did "choose the order" that permanents enter the battlefield from Warp World, then you would "choose" to put the Avenger onto the battlefield first, followed by the lands. Triggered abilities go on the stack after the current spell finishes resolving, in the order of their controller's choosing. So I would put the landfall abilities on the stack first, followed by the Avenger's enters the battlefield trigger.

One of my favorite mythics, power-wise and flavor-wise. I like the fact that, unlike most other timmy creatures (iona, griselbrand, etc), cheating it out early doesn't do you very much, and it has a ton of lategame power.

The only problem is keeping track of all the +1/+1 counters, especially if you get another avenger in (or flicker it, etc). Sometimes even this doesn't matter, since you just say "I can one shot you, do you have a board wipe?"

Also, the synergies it has with boundless realms or craterhoof behemoth is hilarious

Some cards are designed with adjacent blocks in mind. This is one of those cards.

Specifically, it works well with the Jund and Naya cards from Shards of Alara. The tokens feed Jund's devouring predators while the +1/+1 counters contribute ever so slightly to Naya's power 5 matters theme.
