Hyper Duress in mono-black. Or use both if it fits your deck, with Pithing Needle, and Thought Hemorrhage. Name everything you just saw then sit back and laugh.

I'd say Duress is better. This only becomes effective when you have 4 or 5 Swamps and can see their whole hand and by that time it probably won't really be all that effective. Duress lets you see the whole hand for one even though you can't discard anything you want. Still a decent card but not anything overly powerful.

In black-heavy EDH, this card seems great. Otherwise, it comes into it's own too late to be useful.

Early game this sucks because you have no choice. And late game I'd rather play a mind shatter.

This is better mid-late game, while Duress is better earlygame.

However, duress can never get creatures, so it depends on what you're up against.

Of course thoughtseize beats them both

This is nice in a monoblack, where you quickly get enough swamps to see the entire hand, possibly helped by a mind rot. You can remove your opponent's most dangerous monsters before they get into play, something duress cannot. Has helped me many times.

This isn't bad. Best at 1-3 copies as you don't really want to use it before you get 3+ swamps in play. Depending on your opponents deck this could become active as early as turn 3. Pretty decent against control as well as playing this late game will let you discard their most important/threatening card. The real downside to this is you can only play it in mono-black and even then you need to limit yourself to mostly swamps.

It only costs a B to cast, which is good. However, Blackmail does the job with 3 cards right from the beginning so unless you have more than three swamps you might as well use Blackmail instead of Mire's Toll.

Once you've got enough swamps to actually reveal their entire hand, you should really just use Mind Sludge instead...

About as good as Blackmail. About...

People don't seem to realize that this costs Black. Mind Sludge is 4Black. Mind Shatter is Variable ColorlessBlackBlack. Both of those require a lot of mana.

What this is is a very low cost card that gets progressively better as the game goes on. Turn one, it's just "Target opponent discards a card." Turn four, it's usually "Target player reveals their hand and discards a card of your choice." All while leaving the rest of your mana open for your other spells or abilities.

This card is fantastic for a one mana discard spell. Not quite as good as Duress, I think, but still quite good, and has the potential to really screw up your opponent's hand.

Good on turn 3+, akin to blackmail.
