It's a shame that this is going to go down in history as 'the bad Birds' - it's a fine card in its own right. It's just that Birds of Paradise is almost always better and there's only so many slots of mana fixing a deck wants.

Birds of Paradise lite! The tree is a slightly better blocker, but do you really need a 'blocker' or do you need speed?

Makes me wonder why there are so few plants in Magic. You could have some sort of elemental plant lord that gave all plants +1/+1 or something. I'd make that deck.

And thus WotC heard your cry, and made Avenger of Zendikar
Bravo, Wizards, bravo.

@Stygimoloch LOL, great now I have a song called "Surfin' Bird" by Trashmen in my head XD

Well...Everybody's heard about the bird.

The tree is still a very solid card (and the art is pretty too).
I don't really compare it to the birds (it will always lose to those flying little urchins).

The funny thing is this doesn't have defender, so if it does get a power boost, you can attack with a tree. Not a Treefolk, mind you, just a regular ol' tree.

I find it odd that this is a rare, and Gemhide Sliver is a common, despite that Gemhide is actually stronger and a better card.

I wish this were a defender so it could synergize with overgrown battlement as well.

I'm amazed at how often I attack with these guys. Overrun!

Rare? Did they decide to get rid of Birds of Paradise for Ninth edition? The card's kind of cool but it definitely doesn't strike me as a rare.

Steak flavored fruit actually doesn't sound that appealing...

Birds of Paradise was actually voted out of Ninth Edition by the players for this. Shocking I know.

@stygimoloch it may be worse than birds but you can only have 4 birds in a deck so there is still a bit of room for this card

You can only run 4 birds, so if you wanted you could run these guys along side them.

I think the reason Birds wasn't in 9th edition was because Birds was in Ravnica block, which was right next door to 9th edition.

This would be a sweet uncommon mana accelerator for draft formats.

Fruit that taste like SPAGHETTI? Fine by me!

@achilleselbow: You don't even have to boost its power, you can attack your opponent with the tree when it's 0 power (it's not about the damage, it's about sending a message!). I like to imagine that as getting a bunch of gardeners to dig out the tree and plant it in your opponent's garden at night just to startle him with the unexplained new tree.

Why doesn't it have defender?

Doesn't compare all that well to the upcoming Sylvan Caryatid. This? Doesn't have defender. That? An extra point of toughness, and hexproof.

As soon as Theros gets released, Utopia Tree is going to evolve into Sylvan Caryatid.

Dies not only in terms of P/T but also in terms of art to Grizzly Bears.

It kind of looks like it's running along the seashore, green hair blowing in the wind, dropping its waterballoon fruits willy nilly as it goes along.
It's the Stephen Tyler tree, just with strange fruits instead of scarves.
@kazenpaus You made me lol.

I wish it had vigilance... why you ask?

Because then I could attack with it, tap it for {U} when it's unblocked and Ninjutsu in Mistblade Shinobi... ninja trees sounds awesome and your opponent will never see it coming.
