Best dragon ever. Powerful combo ability, coolest color combination, interesting flavor text, and my favorite character from the Dissension novel. There is nothing bad I can say about this card, and no its not because I'm afraid that Niv-Mizzet will melt my brain into a puddle with his vast god-like intellect . . . ok yes it is.

This was my first rare that I ever got, and I'll never forget the endless hours of making decks centered around this guy. Curiosity, Mindmoil, Goryo's Vengeance and any targeted discard... ah, the memories.

The only reason why this card wouldn't get a 5/5 in my mind is the lack of supporting Red/Blue cards. The best that I ever got a deck with this guy as the center was essentially Red/Blue Control/burn deck.
Please print more Red-blue cards, Wizards!

This one, not onaly can it be in decks with wizards that could just end the game in instant with its present, but can also be in decks with powerful creatures-in my case those creatures are dragons. Here we have Greater Good in combination with powerfull creatures with low converted mana costs and Niv-Mizzet that can result in catastrophic damage, for exp.-you have Nicol Bolas(not planeswalker) or a token of Godsire/Draco/Blitz Hellion/Phyrexian Soulgorger/Force of Savagery or evan Leveler, any of those low costed mana creatures with big attacking power can do lots of damage with Greater Good and Niv-Mizzet in play. The onaly problem is, those two forests that you have to pay for Greater Good.
I once had sacrificed Hellkite Overlord when he'd already done damage, and you could even pump its attack, for lets say two, (2+8)+10=20!...becouse that would be exactly perfect, if you would suffer from your deth-toll and endless attacks from your opponent's goblins:)
p.s.-Dragons can be quickly cast into play with cards such as Dragon Arch/Urza's Incubator/Thran Dynamo and lots of others, you just have to live throu 5th round and you'll be back in "busyness", once their out the opponent will have to try really hard to put out all the heat.(once one wrote a curious quote about dragons that they're like knockdowns when they come out to play, but three in a row are like a knockout;))

Ok, now the only, thinkable, problem that I can think of with this card is it's cost and awkward color weight. He can only be put in blue red decks, which are as rare as they come. Also, by the time you actually get him out, the match will already be in full swing. It would be so much easier if he were smaller with a smaller manna cost. Esspecialy being that its not like he's a brute force war machine ever going to attack with him so why flying?

As things are now, he might be too late to save a player and won't be used to his full potential. Aside from these disadvantages, which are small, he is awesome.

Now, I heard hearing something about a card call "curiosity" and that it combos with Niv... You can imagen my reaction in seeing this combo:
"Auahhh!? Holy $#!% WTF!? holy F#&!#% Mother of..."
Yeah...

So:

Color weight: -* */2
Unnecessary size and manna cost: -*
Draw power: +*
Triggered ability: +***

Final standing: **** */2

Just play Clout of the Dominus on this guy and he'll win you the game. Even without shroud, he just might draw you the counterspells needed to keep him alive. Probably the best dragon ever.

He's so... Pretty! And just to watch your brain shift gears; Note that his tap effect amounts to the same one countless Goblins, archers, and other such creatures have, with an added card draw. On that note, the burn effect is really nasty. Especially when it turns an otherwise harmless 1-blue draw enchant into -you die now, period-.

Seems like a pretty good use for Whirlpool Drake. Though really, it's pointless to keep mentioning various other combos when Curiosity is an easy one-drop that creates infinite damage. Fortunately it was only in 8th edition, which was replaced by 9th right before Ravnica came out.

wow.. Hes perfect for like a dream halls deck where the purpose is to constantly draw cards to get your fantastic creatures out and he turns spells like cruel ultimatum and drastic revelation (both of which I run in that deck) into 8 and 7 damage spells repectively, the strongest of many win conditions of that deck

I miss the old flavortext...anyways, incredible card, not only a pinger but it's a flying dragon, draws you cards for a tap, AND deals at least 1 damage per turn, not to mention comborific potential...my friend has an Izzet deck, it is incredibly powerful, and this guy is a centerpiece, along with Tibor and Lumia and Spellbound Dragon to name a few...one of my favorite cards EVAH!!!

@Helkarof, no offense, but I don't think you realize that your statement is kind of nonsensical... this card has all the support needed... doesn't blue = card drawing? or as others have put it, Arcanis or even Mindmoil... what about Soratami Seer? And those are just "casual" combos... of course you can go infinite with Mind Over Matter or Ophidian Eye. Great card, plenty of support. Period.

I'm building an edh deck around this guy and hoping to get this infinite combo.
Summoning station+Phyrexian altar = Infinite Mana. Here alone there are many possibilities for instant win in red blue. Such as fireball.
BUT THEN Freed From The Real + Niv = Infinite damage and cards.
If none of your opponents can disrupt this you can kill them all in one fell swoop.
Or you could mill one person out with Blue Sun's Zenith for fun.
Of course playing Blue/Red you put in the whole exarch twin combo. and in case of enemy propaganda type effects. Throw in Mana Echoes to make infinite creatures into infinite mana.
Niv-Mizzet pwns!

Because 13375p34k became mainstream for people of unidentified weal a few years ago, and is incredibly embarassing to see anyone type in nowadays. Niv-Mizzet isn't an internet hacker or troll. He's a badass dragon battlemage.

This guy is truly the personification of {R}{U}. What he does seems so simple for each color individually, but when they come together something wonderful happens.

Wondering which of Alpha's boon cycle is the best? Well, you're an idiot, of course it's Ancestral Recall. But now, you can have that and Lightning Bolt for the price of one!

Well, not really, you can't distribute the bolt among three weenies, so it's actually better this way. But still! You could win games with this!

Well, honestly, if you're packing Ancestral Recall you're going to win without Niv-Mizzet. Come to think of it, you're squandering the potential of Ancestral Recall.

You're a jerk and I hate you.

This guy made me finally add creatures to my Red/Blue counter/burn deck. Still only have him and 2x Metal Workers in it so far. Will definitely put 2x Curosity, 1x Pemmin's Aura, and 1x Freed from the Real to protect and dominate with Niv-Mizzet and also Metal Worker for infinite combos as well.

Great card!

Wow.

I stopped playing for *several* years over 15 years ago.
Back then, "enemy color" cards were practically nonexistent, and rather bad.
I don't remember *anyone* playing a Red/Blue or a Black/White deck
(though I did run a Blue/Green deck for a bit).

Anyway, they've improved the flavor and power of these enemy color combos immensely.
Izzet seems especially interesting and well developed-
I literally never played a single red card before Ravnica came out and totally redefined the color combos
(and Alara came out and elaborated things even further).
Now there are quite a few good Red/Blue cards worthy of a deck,
and this guy is basically the king of them all.

Major props to Wizards for taking the time to really flesh out these "clashing color" cards.

PS @ therealphatmatt: if you're going to murder for this card,
it should at least be for the $90 full-frame Promo Foil ;-)

In case nobody saw it - his old flavor text... TURN IT ON ITS SIDE! It reads: "Niv-Mizet = 1" (The "E" is his M and the "W" is his E) - Power to the Player!

He makes for such a great win-con! Forget Curiosity), everybody and their mums expects it /lame:

@iwitch - nice one with the Swans m8, very creative
Don't forget about Quicksilver Dagger if you want your underlings showing proper tribute. I personally love him as a finisher in my Timmy/Draw deck running Wee Dragonauts, Gelectrode, Basilisk Collar, Psychotic Fury, Remand... you get the idea ;D.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Drastic Revelation yet.

I think it's rather fitting that there are only two dragon wizards and that they work so well together. Dragon Mage makes you draw seven cards when he deals damage to the opponent, and Niv-Mizzet deals even more damage to them for each of those cards you just drew. If both dragons attack and deal all damage, that's -16 right there. Boost either one with an Assault Strobe, and that's game!

He's coming back! I hope they keep this set of abilities and just reprint the card instead of making a new one. Since both Curiosity and Laboratory Maniac are standard, I know what deck I'll be making!
Also, if you haven't seen the Izzet versus Golgari picture, go look at it now. It's absolutely stunning.

A lot of people compare this to Psychosis Crawler, but I honestly think neither is really better. Psychosis Crawler has power and toughness equal to your hand size and when you draw cards it deals that much damage to all your opponents. This targets either a creature or player, costs 1 colorless more, costs colored mana, and taps to draw a card. I'm wondering which is better...
