normally, cards like that have a drawback. this "drawback" is rather an advantage instead.^^
and it's even using hybrid mana...

I run this in a mannequin deck (T2 build but casual play) and when I can get it out by turn four a lot of people just lose interest in the game. Tons of fun to play with.

Awesome in casual. I have had players hiss with rage at this card! Too expensive for consideration in tournament play, but just an awesome sight to behold, especially if you've been building up to seeing this thing hit the board.

Is it possible to use Coffin Queen and 'reanimate' Doomgape and Sacrifice it on the next upkeep to gain 10 lives and do this over and over again?

I just get shivers down my spine when I look at this card! Just think of the power!

Also, I have a thought. The "gain life equal to its toughness" aspect of the effect, does that toughness include +1/+1 tokens and the like? Because I have a deck where if I sacrifice this thing with its power, I could maybe get 12 life that way.

Pretty sick card, unfortunately even though I play Green/ Black this card doesn't really fit the theme of my deck, so I don't use the 2 I have. Regardless an amazing card in the right deck. 4.5/5.

It should be definately played with lightning greaves.

About the guy asking if you can use coffin queen with this guy to gain 10 life each turn: nope. Before this guys ability triggers at the upkeep, you have to choose if you want to untap the queen or not. If you untap it, the doomgape gets removed. And if you keep it tapped, you need to wait another turn to have the queen untapped and ready. So you could sac it once every two turns. But then I'd rather do something better with the queen. :)

Master of Etherium has become known by most of the community on the Gatherer simply because of how he uses caps for the start of every word. With all the comments directed at him I wonder why he hasn't stoped yet.

Not a force in tournament play but still a lot of fun in causal. He's not really got a drawback. Even if you sac him you get 10 life. So it's pretty cool.

Doomgape+ Creakwood Liege+ Grave Pact= LOL

12/12 Doomgape
+3 Life at every beginning of your upkeep
The opponent has to sacrifice a creature whenever you sacrifice the 3/3 green worm

Cons:
-High cost
-Greakwood Liege may be easily killed/destroyed and your combo is broken

About the Coffin Queen, it can be used every turn with this to gain 10 life (unless someone kills either).

The queen's ability says: "When Coffin Queen becomes untapped or you lose control of Coffin Queen, exile that creature." If you untap queen, the ability triggers. However, this is from MtG community Main rules FAQ:
Q: What happens when a triggered ability triggers during the Untap Step?
A: When a triggered ability triggers, it waits until the next time a player would receive priority to go on the stack. In this case, that means that the triggered ability wouldn't go on the stack until the upkeep step.

So the ability waits until upkeep and because you control both abilities (queen's and doomgape's) you can order them any way to stack. First queen's then gape's, gape's resolves first; you sac it, queen's resolves; doomgape is already gone so you don't have to exile it.

But to the card itself: 10/10 trample for 7 mana ain't bad and it's eating doesn't usually matter that much because it gives you life. 4.5/5

Awesome creature... Total beast with trample who gains life and isn't too expensive. Yowza.

With Black/Green, it is entirely possible that this behemoth will hit the table as early as turn 4, and there are plenty of little guys to feast upon while he goes to work. The usual mana accelerators will help you... llanowar elves, dark ritual, Sacrifice, etc.

I had a delightful vision of yet another use for Sanguine Bond looking at this guy. BWahahah.

I'm wearing out his name, but this is yet another incredible card that works with Creakwood Liege. I mean, you're boosting Doomgape to a 12/12 AND providing a 3 point lifegain every turn. Yhatzee.

Incandescent Soulstoke

this can be dropped turn 4 for 11 damage as part of an inblock combo

also, if you cast Double Cleave on it then its a turn 34win

(assuming you played something like Smokebraider on turn 2)

if you went with a green red build,

Turn 1: forest + bird of paradise
Turn 2: mountain + Incandescent Soulstoke
Turn 3: land + put doomgape into play via soulstoke then double cleave for 22 trample damage

Thats disgustingly fantastic.. WORST, WOOOOOOORSSSSTTTTTT case scenario, you gain 10 life. Thats the worst case scenario. Best case scenario, Your hitting with a ten ten trample as early as like turn 5, 6 or 7 in some decks for a very long time as you continually gain life. UGH. shouldnt be hybrid mana it should be straight multicolored. OH! it works with freaking gravepact. i want this card....

The monogreen timmy in me gives it a 10.5/5
The blue/white combo player that gets eaten alive by aggro starts drinking and gives it .5/5.
so its a 5/5.

First reaction: too few drawbacks to this creature for what you get. So what if you need to sacrifice a creature each turn? Unless it gets destroyed (which is harder than normal due to its high toughness and blackness) it will probably win the game for you in a turn or two, and if it does get destroyed you can sac it for ten life. Gaining life for the sacrifice is like a slap in the face for the player who doesn't use this card. I'm not saying the card is too good, because I honestly don't know, but its percieved power seems to be too much, at least for me. Too 'safe' really is what I would say.

Cards like this annoy me, because there is no reason NOT to play them. Think about it: if you were a casual deck-builder playing a green/black deck, why wouldn't you play this card? I think that it is important for cards not to be auto-include because if every card were like that then it would be almost impossible to choose what cards to put into a deck. Sure, sure, you could say that "card X deals with Doomgape easy" but the average casual player isn't going to know that, and especially not just from looking at the card. You could say that the sac effect would deter casual players, but that effect also comes with life gain, which casual players love.

Anyway I am sure there is a good rebuttal to what I am saying, and I would like to know what that is so I can better assess this card's fun value. At the moment it just irritates me (maybe that is the point of it? :P)

I think Xathrid Demon does it better. Does that card please Timmy? Doomgape's 10/10 looks alot bigger than 7/7 though.

I dont see how this monster would physically be able to eat itself. Works well with Creakwood Liege. Get a 12/12, gain three life each turn and Doomgape still has trample. This is why i actually bought a few sealed decks from morningtide

Was it just me, or were the B/G creatures in LorSha exceptionally powerful compared to the others?
Not talking combo potential or what have you,
Just in sheer amounts of power.
Doomgape here, Deity of Scars, their Woodlurker Mimic had a powerful boost, and Quillspike got out of control fast.
I don't know, maybe it's just me.
But I'm a B/G player anyway, so I loved it.

Dear Wizards of the Coast,

I would like more cards with "Doom" in the title, please. I would consider it a personal favor if any of those cards are also ridiculously oversized underprotected the-whole-table-laughs-when-it-hits-play mega-monsters with highly evocative art and enjoyable flavor text, but, really, that's much too much to ask, and to be honest I'm plenty satisfied with fun mediocre-even-in-casual-play junk like Doom Cannon. (And I think it'll be d*mn hard to top the name Doomgape.)

However, I have a small quibble. Next time you all decide to charge ahead and be bold and print a card this cool, could you please give it the Legendary supertype, so that I can play it as my commander in EDH?

Many thanks! 5+/5.

P.S. It's really not too late to bring back doom counters. Just saying.

P.P.S. Doomgape + Enduring Renewal may not be the most efficient combo in Magic, but it's one of the most beautiful and naturalistic. (Contrast with Smokestack + Crucible of Worlds, which is depressingly industrial.)

It's almost absurd, how much better this is than Lord of the Pit. It's 3 bigger. It's got a hybrid cost. You gain life when you make your sacrifices. And when you run out of creatures, it doesn't eat you, you eat it. The only drawback is that it doesn't fly, but really, on a 10/10 trampler, who needs flying?

This card is so freaking good compared to the Lord of the Pit that it's sad. Why make something that is clearly better than a good enough staple? Just to do it I guess... Oh, and it's an elemental, which is of huge importance... I hate this card because of what it has done to my memories of the game, even though it's a powerhouse of a creature.
Laguz
★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (5 votes)
Good lord. Might be the most aggressively costed creature of all time...10 trampling power for seven mana! Hybrid mana at that! And the supposed 'drawback' is easily worked around to give you a steady stream of life every turn. Reassembling skeleton anyone? Not to mention it's green, so it's almost certainly hitting the board early...absolutely phenomenal.

If you want this guy in a reanimation deck, you can use Coffin Queen to pull out other monsters for him to eat and gain ~8 life per turn, instead of 1 per turn from tokens.

Diabolic servitude sorta works, but removes the creatures from the game each turn.

My friend has this card, and plays it like an idiot.

Theres two ways to play it. You can either play it for life gain and card shennanigans, or you use it as a creature suicide beatstick.

just make sure you can keep the upkeep cost going, and you'll be fine. If you have a token deck, this should be no sweat.

Its surprisingly useful that this thing cares about the toughness of what it eats, not the power. Most creature ramp spells (Overgrown Battlement, Birds of Paradise, Sylvan Caryatid, etc.) have a higher toughness than power. Of course, when you're getting a 10/10 trample out turn 4 or so, you probably don't need much lifegain.
