It can be a good card, but in most cases I have found it to be pretty mediocre. When playing it on turn 5, most the time all it has is Flying or Trample, if anything at all. The only way I can see myself putting this in over Sengir Vampire is if either I play a lot of early cards with varying keyword abilities, or if my opponent has a lot of them.

My friend has a deck based around this.
Funny, once he had protection from red, blue, black, CMC 3+, lifelink and double strike all at the same time on this. I Celestial Purge'd it.
What does it matter if he doesn't get banding or flanking?
Banding isn't that good of an ability and an ability you don't see anymore and aint seen any banding creature that I thought anything of. PLUS banding requires TWO creatures with banding to be useful...
Flanking is ok, but not so great that I can even see it mattering... With everything else it can get, what does it matter?? (I mean, I use flanking creatures and LOVE them but the ability isn't THAT great, to me atleast...)
Now FLASH or UNEARTH, that would be awesome abilities for him to beable to obtain :D Personally I think either would be better for him to also get than Flanking or Banding...
But he can't get any of them, but no matter, I love this guy!
@Ritius
Funny, you mention mixing him with Mirri the cursed and/or Vampire Nighthawk lol, my thought was putting him in my vampire deck! Him, LIFE LINK with Senguin Bond & Vampire Nocturnus in play til I get a Blood Tribute lol :P

No single card has deathtouch and trample.
I wonder if that means you can assign 1 to each blocker, and thus get maximum trample dmg.
A question I'll post to the forums once I'm not at work (where forums are blocked, as is anything with "warcraft" in the name, but this site is viewed almost all day without anyone batting an eye).
Funny, this is the only black creature that has shroud. And only then when you have something else in the gravey with shroud, meaning you need another color in your deck if you want it to be shrouded by its ability, since the only colorless creature with shroud is Drill Skimmer and that is a conditional shroud as well.
Would this work if i had a few slivers in a graveyard and alot of slivers on the field, would the slivers in the graveyard still have the other abilities?

So great that it's splashable. Put it in an angel deck, a soldier deck, anything.
@godwar
kinda. cairn would get the abilities granted by the sliver abilities (i.e. winged sliver is in the grave yard "all slivers have flying" winged sliver is a sliver thus it has flying. if winged sliver has flying cairn wanderer has flying) same is true for other slivers

No, it doesn't. It also doesn't work for wither, annihilator, fade, suspend or any other ability that's not listed on the card itself.

@godwar, nogoodnamesleft If you have a Goblin King in the graveyard, do your goblins get +1/+1? No. He has an ability "other goblin creatures get +1/+1," but being in the graveyard, it has no effect. Same with slivers. The Winged Sliver doesn't have flying; he has an ability "All sliver creatures have flying". Because it says "all" and not "other" he gives himself flying when his ability is in effect. His ability is not in effect while he's in the graveyard. He does not have the flying static ability. If he's the only thing in the graveyard, your Cairn Wanderer doesn't get flying.

Cairn Wanderer do not gain any ability not listed on him (Flying, Fear, First Strike, Double Strike, any kind of Landwalk and Protection, Deathtouch, Trample, Haste, Shroud, Reach, Lifelink and Vigiliance). So no flanking, banding, anihilator Etc.
He does not gain any abilities while his is not on the battlefield and his does not gain any abilities of creatures not in the graveyard. Nor does he gain abilities of noncreature cards (if you should wonder).
He can not gain static abilities or parts of static abilities that isn't just those key words (works a little different for landwalk and protection, but basicly just read; has it flying or has it flying sometimes, if the latter is true then he don't get flying.), same is true for activated and triggered abilities which he will never gain. That means he doesn't gain abilities from Slivers nor from Level Up cards (unless those cards have abilities when they are level zero).
In other words: Cairn Wanderer only gains abilities from creatures in your graveyard with a very narrow set of static abilities.
So how to use him: well you can either put him in any black based tribal deck (vampires or zombies) or you can try to build around him.
If you want to build around him then using Buried Alive is a fantastic tool to do so. But which creatures to choice from?
Well, reach is not important as long as he has flying. And Flying is very common ability. First strike is not important as long as you can get double strike. Trample works good with deathtouch but is redundant with protection and landwalk, same goes for fear but that doesn't work with trample. Shroud is also redundant with protection, but it is still neat. Haste is somewhat redundant by itself. Lifelink and vigiliance is good for racing your opponent.
And here is my list of cards to use: Thornweald Archer, Inkwell Leviathan, Spirit of the Night, Dragon Tyrant, Iridecent Angel, Horde of Notions, Giant Solifuge, Hellkite Overlord, Guardian of the Guildpact, Enemy of the Guildpact, Simic Sky Swallower, Skyhunter Skirmisher, Angelic Curator, Tel-Jilad Archers, Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Akroma, Angel of Fury, Mirran Crusader, Mirri the Cursed, Mirri, Cat Warrior, Vampire Nighthawk, Deft Duelist, Baneslayer Angel, Glissa, the Traitor, Sphinx of the Steel Wind, Wurmcoil Engine, Oversoul of Dusk and finaly Beloved Captain.
Excellent for black grave decks. But good LORD this poor deplorable thing is ugly.

Most of the comments on this card disappoint me. It's a pretty clearly worded card - if it says it, it has it; and if not, don't ask. The card does not say Annihilator, Wither, Infect, ect. It gives you a pretty clear list, and if you have any decent magic experience, you should know already that you CANT ASSUME ANYTHING. It's pretty commonly known (though I admit a little more confusing) that if an ability is conditional(if a card gains it through any means, including flipping, level-up, ect), it doesn't count, even if (in most cases) the conditions are met anyway - especially when dealing with cards in the grave, where the conditions for the abilities it lists can't be met anyway.
I hope this clears things up (again, I know) for any future comments; sorry if I got a bit ranty. All in all, he's a pretty interesting card. Best friends with Necrotic Ooze for all sorts of graveyard ability fun.

So, in order to make it as ridiculous as possible, you would need the following cards in graveyards:
This gives Cairn Wanderer all the useful abilities it can possibly have, since landwalk is redundant when you have protection from everything. It would even have first strike, even though it's useless with double strike.
If you can think of any landwalk abilities I'm missing, or if you can think of a way to get all the non-landwalk abilities with fewer than 6 creatures, feel free to contribute.

I discovered Concerted Effort today, and I'm trying to build a Kaalia of the Vast deck with it. My first idea was to start with the Knights (Black, White, Silver, and Blood), because Kaalia is good and all, but I want a little bit of room to maneuver in case people are ready to Exile, Steal, or otherwise Kill on Sight any big uglies- the Knights 'look' less scary, but with Sword of Vengeance + Concerted Effort, they can be as awesome as the Angels, Demons, and Dragons that I'll be running as well.
So anyway, this is an odd question, but- does anyone know of any good advice for how to search Gatherer for particular kinds of cards and effects that aren't obvious? I could look up EVERY card with a keyword I wanted, but is there a faster way to try to find stuff that would be particularly good with Concerted Effort? is there a fast way to find cards with lots of keywords without typing in every combination of Keywords?
This is one of those cards that in a few years is going to look weird. We've already had fear replaced with intimidate, and shroud seems to have been replaced with hexproof. I expect new evergreen words will be added and this guy's just going to look bizarre out of context.
If you want to play a dedicated deck with this card, try Buried Alive to bury this, Giant Solifuge, and Drogskol Reaver. Reanimate or Animate Dead for an early 4/4 with Haste, Flying, Lifelink, Double Strike, Trample, and Shroud! With Dark Ritual you can even play him on the second turn. It's not the most powerful play in a Reanimator deck, but it's fun to build your own creature.
Simply playing this in the lategame is also a good time. I love going through each player's graveyard to figure out exactly what abilities he has.

Pop quiz puzzle: assuming you want Cairn Wanderer to have all of these abilities, including all available forms of landwalk and protection from every card in the game, what's the fewest number of creatures you could put into your graveyard to accomplish this without Progenitus?
EDIT: a tip of the hat and a high-five to WhiteWizard42, who kicked ass and got an answer wayyy under what I came up with, in part by using Humility; I edited to add a "without Progenitus" clause because eh, why not?

The art on this card is... weird. Reminds me of certain artists I've seen on museums. Haven't played the card though, but it doesn't look too shabby.
Since Inkwell Leviathan already gives this islandwalk replace wrexial and Mirri with Stalker hag.
Desert Nomad has a very specific landwalk ability, although it, Zombie Musher and Ayumi are unnecessary since Desert is a non basic land, and snow or legendary lands are either nonbasic or have basic types.
Doubly redundant are snow swampwalk and snow forestwalk.
If you don't want to use progenitus the following can be protected from: Artifacts Creatures Enchantments Lands Arcane
Today I managed to make him a 4/4 flying, first strike, haste, lifelink, protection from red, protection from black, protection from demons, protection from dragons, trample, vigilance. Good things happen when you Traumatize the guy playing the Radiant, Archangel deck.
