What do you get when Ball Lightning and Deadly Insect make a baby? Cap'n Tickles, of course. A dangerous creature in two colors that like unsolvable threats, with trample, which helps trigger Bloodthirst and force extra damage through if blocked. An aggressive 4-drop that could find its way into many decks, and as a hybrid rather than a gold creature, is great in mono-red or green as well. Thankfully it wasn't given 6 power, or else it would have been broken.

Awesome card, and Srhoud makes up for the fact that it only has 1 toughtness.

Deadly Insect on crack.

I am in love with that nickname. Cap'n Tickles is going in a deck even if it kills me. And it won't. It'll just kill other people.

closer to a spider than an insect type. and spiders are ticklier too.

This is basically a weaker version of Yavimaya Ants without the upkeep. Not sure if it's better - creatures with 1 toughness usually don't stick around long enough for upkeep to be a problem, and it has 1 less power. The shroud is nice, but that does mean you can't Giant Growth or Rancor it, and I don't know how likely it would be that your opponent would try to blast it anyway when he can just chump block. I guess I'm partial to the ants since they were in my first deck ever, but both are pretty good.

Not very aggressively costed, is it? It should have just been a ball lightning with shroud for four mana. I'd say that 3cc and 5 power would have made this card good.

Don't be fooled, this thing did its fair share of smashing. It saw play in a good many competitive decks of the time.
In the context in which it existed, lowering CMC and/or raising power would have been problematic. Plus, its worth noting that this has an incredibly flexible mana cost when compared to a hybrid like Boggart Ram-Gang, which can really only be supported by a red, green, or red/green deck.
Also, love the name Cap'n Tickles :)

Was a really powerful card, and one that I absolutely loved. Too often this is a Lightning Blast to the face first, followed by the opponent's desperated attempt to find something to block it. All its power came from its shroud - the safest way to deal with a Ball Lightning is to save a Bolt for it, but the Bolt would stay dead against Giant Solifuge. Blockers have always been the poor man's choice, as they can be burned or even Frenzied away, but they are the only choice when it comes to stopping this beast. And then it's 4 to the dome, threatening to at least trample over with another 4, and that's when they do manage to get a decent blocker.

I've actually come to resent this card on the basis that it's a violation of the spirit of hybridness.

There is NOTHING even remotely red about shroud.

Shroud is a very green ability HairlesThoctar. This creature is very green. And a teensy bit red. And it's Cap'n Tickles.

Dear Wizards... solifugae are NO FRIGGIN INSECTS, even giving them the spider type would be less wrong /./

I'd rather cast a Bloodbraid Elf in a R/G deck, but in a R/X or G/X deck, i can see this get played.

What imperialstonedragon said. Solifugae are arachnids. They are more related to spiders and scorpions. I know that merging them to an "arachnid" creature type would seem to scientific and not fantasy enough but you could at least make it a spider as it is not an insect. It is not like there are not any other spiders without reach.

Wait a second... A solifuge isn't an insect! It's an arachnid! Though I have to admit it's pretty fitting such a kickass creature was honoured with such a kickass card.

So...It's like Spark Elemental...with shroud...that might not die?

I giggle uncontrollably every time I think of the name Cap'n Tickles. My non-magic-playing girlfriend got me a bunch of monoblue cards that I had a decklist of online, but the really awesome thing she got me was a foil version of this. I don't care if it's not a Johnny-friendly card, I am so putting it in a R/G deck.

While he's suffered a bit under power creep, Cap'n Tickles still has one heck of a sucker punch. He actually would have been pretty great if he was reprinted in Zendikar, since he one-shots Jace 2.0 and can't be bounced. :D

Pair this up with Wolfir Silverheart. An 8/5 that can trample each turn.

Still the only creature you can play in monored with either shroud or hexproof (other than Drill-Skimmer)

I object! Solifuges are not insects! (They're arachnids. Not spiders, but close.)
