This card seems too cheap for what it can do.

Fun with Goblin Sharpshooter.
You'll clear your opponent's board from all creatures (except for those with protection from red and/or shroud) and will therefore likely be able to hit your opponent with Horobi the next turn.

Horobi + prodigal pyromancer, spam creature kill on enemy. The only problem with it is it says "whenever a creature" instead of opponents creature. I usually avoid cards that can give my opponent benefits as well, you never know when that can backfire.

I built an EDH deck around this guy once

4cmc for a 4/4 flier, that is always good, I guess the makers thought that the blanket effect was enough of a drawback, that and legendaryness, but really, a good card in a EDH deck w/ black

The card reads: "Whenever a creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, destroy that creature."

I can't find any rulings for this card. If a spell or ability is countered, it still targeted a card. Would that mean that the target creature is destroyed even if the spell or ability is countered?

Cauldron of Souls= destroy any number of target creatures. They won't gain persist because they are destroyed before then.

-Abilities- gaining Deathtouch. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW!? I'll tell you where. He's dead. This guy killed him with a Goblin Sharpshooter. Of course you have to be careful not to use any Enchantment buffs on your own monsters >.> Or they'll die too... But that's a small price to pay for mass destruction in a can, and for only 4 mana. I agree that he's pretty goofy looking though, as he looks more like an old west spook than a jappy spook.

Great with Eldrazi Monument, especially in a Spirit and Arcane deck. Make all of your creatures indestructible, so that the drawback no longer affects you. Soulshift for your spirits takes care of the sacrificial cost of the Monument, while at the same time gauranteeing that you get to play at least one Spirit spell each turn. Cards such as Waxmane Baku, Skullmane Baku, Teller of Tales, Kami of the Waning Moon, etc all ensure that you get to target plenty of creatures whenever you play a spell. Get enough creatures out and each time you play a spirit, you get to destroy multiple opponent creatures.

@Duddits: Yes. As soon as the ability targets the creature, it dies. The ability does not even have to resolve, the fact that it targets is enough.

When giant growth becomes a 1 mana kill spell... you're doing something right!

The really cool part is this gets past protection from black. The effect doesn't target the creature, it activates as a result of the creature being targeted so if a player tries to enchant their protection from black creature then it dies. You can use this in a multicolored deck to cast giant growth or something of the like on their creatures with protection from black to quickly eliminate them.

@Solaris Now the problem with Kami of the Waning Moon and Teller of Tales is they are not conditional. You will not want to play your Kami of the Wanning Moon whilst Hirobi, Death's Wail is on the field when your opponent has no creatures. The effect is non-conditional so you have to give a creature fear, meaning you will probably end up giving the Wanning Moon fear and killing him so you don't have to keep targeting your own creatures. With soul shift and a lot of the black cards from that set alone it's not hard to get the kami back once it's dead but worrying about the drawback you just put yourself in can be a pain. In my opinion at least.

The problem with this guy is that when you play it, you're down four mana that you can use to pay for targeted spells and abilities, and your opponents aren't. So chances are they'll target him before he can kill anything else, while you don't have the mana to do much in response before he dies.

Protect him with shroud, or Darksteel Plate, or whatever, on the other hand, and you basically have the game.

Prodigal Pyromancer :D

Or Spikeshot Elder :D

Or Inferno Titan :D

Seriously, this card seems like it could be used in all sorts of fun.... For you, anyway. Not so much for the guy who's losing 5 creatures a turn from the 3 cards I have already stated. And, once you've killed their creatures, bash away :D

@SleetFox
How would you propose equipping him with Darksteel Plate? Equipping him would destroy him. You must target him to equip him, and equipping is an ability.

Run him in a R/B murder deck with soulbright flamekin. And by murder, I mean the opponent and their creatures.

This creature is an unbelievable menace. Cheap at 4/4 Flyer for 4, with an ability with the potential to devastate an opponent who relies on targeting his own creatures.

I opened this and Jugan in sealed. Felt so good when opponent didn't even dare to target Jugan or else I'd near Hex'd him.

Favorite 2 combos:

Asceticism: Protect all your creatures from his effect with a built-in green Doomblade

Hex Parasite: kill anything, from a colorless source, for 2 life or Black

Ok, I'm NOT new to magic by any means, but I really want to know this.. What happens if you shift the target of a spell or ability with Spellskite?

Horobi's ability goes on the stack, as it's an activated ability, reading "whenever"

At this point, I KNOW you can COUNTER his ability with stifle or trickbind, as neither actually targets him, only the ability. Even if it did, trickbind would prevent another copy of his ability from being placed on the stack.

But if the target is CHANGED, does that still destroy the original target? Because creature has still been targeted, but if the creature is no longer targeted when the ability resolves, does it matter?

I don't personally think so, but i could easily be wrong...

Asceticism with Horobi is hilarious. Your opponents can't target your creatures, but you can "regenerate" theirs for the low, low price of 1Green.
And yes, Horobi looks awesome. Say what you will about Kamigawa's mechanics and power level, but the art direction did everything right.

@WannabeJedi: That doesn't work. Horobi has to be on the battlefield as the targeted spell is cast or it won't trigger.
I wish it were an Oni. And why don't I have this for EDH? It's pure gold in a control/chaos deck. HOROBI DENIES YOUR PUNY EQUIPMENT.

In a Horobi, Death's Wail commander deck, the only black card that saves Horobi from itself is Wail of the Nim.
Eldrazi Monument helps though.

Really easy to abuse this card. Its not a "drawback" considering that most things that will target your creatures which your opponents control, would have dealt with them anyways. But since this card is on your side you have the advantage, and can set your deck up to "plague wind" your opponent.

Not only that but its a 4/4 flying for 4. Fantastic card.

You can't equip this card. If you equip him he dies. I want to make an EDH deck with him as my commander. It will be soooooooooooooooooo much fun. This and Hokori, dust drinker are some of the dumbest generals I've seen.

Awesome card if used correctly. Pair with Cauldron of Souls for ongoing permanent mass removal. It also turns Touch of Darkness and Cauldron Haze into "destroy all creatures your opponents control." I approve.

Don't forget about Nefashu. If he's already on the battlefield when you cast Horobi, it doesn't take any additional mana to kill five creatures.

Best card to play with him for maximum flavor and efficiency? Touch of Darkness, part of Legends' cycle of one mana instants that can target any number of creatures to change thier colors. 5 mana total to wipe every non hexproof/shroud creature on the opposing field isn't bad at all.

Dismiss into Dream has a one-sided version. Easier to protect, but 3 more mana. Horobi has a neat body, but how often does he survive to attack? I think they still fill different roles, but dismiss is easier to use.
