It works well with Hidetsugu's Second Rite
Fourth turn kill using mana producers!

It work really good with Anthem of Rakdos on hellbent... But Your opponents must have even-numbered life though...

You know what's really fun? Give this guy lifelink. Especially in a multiplayer game.

This + lifelink = easy win.
Me: "Okay, so we both get 10 damage, and I gain 20 life."

Overblaze, it's even in the same set.

@Forgeling It and Overblaze were even in the same precon.

Hard to even block because it's not targeted. It just blows up everything... Sure that's including you, but why would you be using it if you weren't ahead. Be funny to see a game turn Sudden Death because this guy were untapped repeatedly somehow and everyone got burned down to 1 LP.

Would be an awesome EDH general if you can find a way to protect it and get it past control.

@GradiustheFox

Sadly he would do nothing at one life. He does half of one, rounded down, which is zero.

Frees from the Real is especially useful. Bring them down to 3 or less life, than Bolt them.

Even better than lifelink give him infect!
Be warned, you may lose all your friends.

This guy should seriously be an avatar or something.

furnace of wrath for instant tie!

Furnace of Rath doesn't always give an instant tie, due to the words "rounded down" on this card. Instead Heartless Hidestugu would reduce all players life totals to 1 or zero depending on whether their life total is odd or even respectively. I think this is much better. All you need to is make sure your's is odd and theirs is even, but this does involve life gain/loss as it's impossible to cause an odd numbered amount of damage with the Furnace in play. My other favourite combos:
Lifelink on Hidestugu.
Grafted Exoskeleton (especially vs lifegain decks)
Pariah's Shield preferably on Stuffy Doll (auto win if your life total is higher than your opponent's, or autowin if you also have the Furnace of Rath out)

This and others are reasons the EDH committee needs to up poison counter kills to 20.

A great general with Infect. Grafted Exoskeleton anyone? NOBODY WINS. Especially janky Lifegain decks.

I just puzzled out a ridiculously unlikely first-turn kill with this guy. It's not tournament-legal, since it needs multiple instances of two restricted vintage cards, but it also does not use the Power 9.

First turn, opening hand: Mountain, 4 Lotus Petals, Seething Song, Wheel of Fortune.
Play Mountain, all four Petals, tap Mountain, sac two Petals, cast Seething Song, cast Wheel of Fortune. Discard nothing but draw 7!

Draw: Healing Salve, 3 Seething Songs, Simian Spirit Guide, Mass Hysteria, Wheel of Fortune.

You still have RedRed in the pool. Sac a Petal for White, play Healing Salve, gain 3 Life. Sac last Petal for Red, use all mana to cast Seething Song, then cast the two other Seething Songs. You have RedRedRedRedRedRedRedRedRed in the pool. Toss the Spirit Guide, use Red to cast Mass Hysteria, use RedRedRed to cast Wheel of Fortune, hand was empty again, draw another 7. You still have RedRedRedRedRedRed in the pool.

Draw: Heartless Hidetsugu, either Overblaze or Furnace of Rath, and three further Spirit Guides, these can even be Elvish Spirit Guides, and two more cards of no import.

Toss all three Spirit Guides, giving you six Red and an additional three mana (Red or Green, does not matter). Play Hidetsugu, and either play Furnace, or target him with Overblaze. He has Haste thanks to Mass Hysteria.

Tap him, he deals double damage, hitting your opponent for 20... and you only for 22 of your 23.

Opponent dead, you have a Near-Death Experience but win and enter the annals of Magic history. :P

Most people here don't seem to realize it deals damage to each player, aka your opponents and YOU. If infect would kill your opponent it would likely kill you too without previous manipulation, and doubling the damage also requires similar finesse. The suggestion to use him as a general in EDH is just plain funny and should probably get him banned as one, but until then i have a new planned EDH deck.

ive seen decks built round this guy, deal damage to players so your opponents are all on even life totals and your allies are all on odd life totals then double the damage, lost so many times that way. however I prefer Skirk Fire Marshal maybe they could find themselves in the same deck

@ jsttu: That can easily be remedied by having 19 or less life, which is very easy to achieve.

I bet he would be a fun EDH genera... I mean Commander. Players start with 40 life, so Heartless will do 20- one less than the amount of general damage needed to win.

@ideatog
Only combat damage is general damage. His tap ability deals no general damage. He still deals massive damage to everyone, and slings your opponents and you right into direct damage death range. Just hope you're the only one at the table holding lightning bolt. I play him with a lot of haste enablers, some cheap fliers (they only need to deal about 3 damage!), fireball like spells, etc.

Also, thousand-year elixir is fantastic with him.

I am sorry for not editing, as I am new to this site.

Ideatog, scratch my thought, the previous poster even said it had to be combat damage. I forgot that.

i like the idea of infect until you see the card says every player even you just go with life link and add life to your self

★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (9 votes)
Yeah, Lifelink seems like a good idea. Also Sulfuric Vapors/Akki Lavarunner and Furnace of Rath/Overblaze/Quest for the Pure Flame if you have a way to not kill yourself. Like Lifelink, but not Spirit Link. Eternity Vessel might also be nice.

As for infect, you can just keep your opponent's life above 19 and yours below 20. Skyshroud Cutter or Tree of Redemption or something. Alternately, in multiplayer, you can just threaten to kill everyone.

"NOBODY MOVE OR I'LL BLOW THIS WHOLE GAME TO SMITHEREENS!"
"Everybody STOP! He's just crazy enough to do it!"
"Put down the detonator, Jim. We know you're smarter tha-"
"I SAID NOBODY MOVE!"

This + lifelink definitely boarders on being broken in EDH, IMO.

If they ban Kokusho, the Evening Star, in EDH (which is totally appropriate, IMO), then they really also could ban this... at least as a general... because this + Gisela also is pretty overpowered, IMO...

Idea. Melira, Sylvok Outcast on your side of the field. Tap Heartless and give him Tainted Strike on the stack. If everyone is at 20 (or greater), that's an immediate win regardless of players in the game.

This guy makes the best EDH Commander. Make a mono-red beatdown/burn deck with him in charge, and I guarantee that come hell or high water, the game will end fast.

One of my first ever rares, got him in an intro pack.

I love the concept, the backstory (he becomes a GOD) and the sheer downright coolness of it.

I can't say much more. He's just that good.

Curse of bloodletting and Personal Sanctuary. Just don't pull that one out unless you're ready to dodge whatever beverage your hapless soon-to-be former friend is holding.

Combine with Hammer of Purphoros and Illusionist's Bracers for a turn 5 or turn 6 win with him as your general in EDH. Definitely a brutal general. Use him in a heavy burn and creature control EDH deck for mono red, splash in artifacts such as Basilisk Collar, Quietus Spikeand Lightning Greaves and sit back and lol the entire time. "oh, you play life gain and infinite tokens, that's cute. want to self destruct or shall I just replace you with a crater in the floor?"

This would be funny as hell in an EDH deck with Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. Especially if you have a way of giving him haste.

Combo with tainted strike and hex parasite for the win. (You only 1 shot people with 20 or more life).

You can't really see it in this shot, but in his right hand, he's got a Loxodon Warhammer.
