Very nice in a WW sideboard against control, and with a nice body to boot! Very underrated, I kinda like her!

Too bad it hurts you as well. It's going to make it irritating to put down any token generating soceries or instants.

Going straight into my casual soldier deck, as its mostly made of creatures anyway

Also good in heavy creature decks like White/Green to slow control and burn decks

A good legend. Glowrider costs 1 more but is also non-legend, I think both have a place in the right decks.

The art reminds me of Lightning from FF13.

I don't always play Trinisphere or Thorn of Amethyst, but when I do, I make it more vulnerable.

On the side of Standard, I think it'll go like how Mental Misstep went: tried but eventually unplayed. I mean, you just gotta play Honor of the Pure in WW.

This is not a bad thing at all.

Also she is a very good card with Legacy potential, 5/5.

An absolutely necessary print given the copious number of control spells in the standard format.

Shuts down everything from Chandra's Vengence (Chandra, the Firebrand and Sorin's Vengeance as the win condition with a myriad of control spells) to Delver Blade (Delver of Secrets with a few equipment and a load of instants and sorceries, particularly Ponder to set up the flip).

This and Grand Abolisher will be the go to cards for counter-control and the mercifully light mana restriction will allow this card to be in nearly all aggro decks.

This is incredibly good, could make a large impact in standard and become an eternal white weenie STAPLE.

2 power first strike is very good at the moment; that shuts down a lot of attackers in the format. Low cost. The mana buffer is chocolate on the cake.

Oh, and tastefully hot.

Very good. For 2 mana you get a Human solider(2 very relevant creature types), with first strke and makes non-creature spells cost 1 more. You are now slowing down any sort of spell that might be used to respond to your weenies. I wouldn't mind having a few of her. She is really good.

@JaFaR_Ironclad: I was thinking almost EXACTLY the same thing. I'd definitely agree that Thalia will volunteer to either bind with the current Avacyn or become a completely new Avacyn.

Look at a close-up of her card art and the promo art for Avacyn Restored. Their faces and hair color are almost identical. This may be why Thalia's card art shows her at such an unusual angle. Her flavor text (while it certainly doesn't prove anything) could support this theory.

I also agree with the idea of the hunted becoming the hunters as far as humans are concerned. As for any of this igniting Thalia's spark (should it exist), that may or may not happen. I'd like it, but I'll bet that it doesn't.

I got one of these in a fatpack, today. Gonna scoop three more up before their price hikes (not saying it WILL happen, just that I wouldn't be surprised if it did).

Her body is already pretty darn good (2/1 first strike isn't GREAT, but in reality it is going to be very useful, particularly in a format where tons of creatures have 2 or less toughness), but that ability is FIERCE for white weenie. Maybe she'd have a home in a WG deck? Certainly, she'd sync up really well with green's "all creatures, all the time" strategy.

I'm expecting the one thing that keeps Thalia in check for the time being is Gut Shot. The nightmare scenario for a control deck vs. Thalia is being on the draw, seeing Thalia hit the table turn 2 (you're at 1 land so you can't leak), and then not being able to kill her aside from tapping out turn 3 (most Black removal/Incinerate) or turn 4 (Oblivion Ring). That means while she's swinging against you with first strike – wich is very relevant in this scenario – she's buying breathing room by forcing you to spend extra resources to remove her at a time when resources are scarce. But an even bigger problems is where she sits on the curve. She comes down turn 2 under leak, that means unless you remove her before your second turn, there is no way to prevent Mirran Crusader from resolving. And the only way you can kill her with one land out is if you have a card that costs 0 to cast. You're now in a pretty dicey situation – before your third turn even starts. So Gut Shot is the only way in standard right now to slow down that progression.

Yeah, Grand Abolisher does the same thing in that scenario, but there's another serious consideration on top of that. You put down abolisher turn 2, Crusader turn 3, Abolisher swings in 2 (if there's no opposing creature of power > 1, or he didn't eat a Doom Blade/Incinerate). At this point, control player is on turn 3. They can Vapor Snag the Abolisher and then leak the next play, or O-Ring the Crusader, or Slagstorm to wipe the board, etc. Turn 4 (6 damage later) they can wipe with Day of Judgment or Black Sun's Zenith. But if that Abolisher were Thalia, not only would they almost never have to hold her back on the attack because of an opposing creature, but you just can't make those plays. You can't Vapor Snag into Leak until turn 4. You can't O-Ring or Slagstorm until turn 4. You can't Day or Black Sun's until turn 5. And that one extra turn is *enormous* in human decks.

Of course 1-mana removal gets you around her soft-lock on turn 2, but again, she's still hampering your ability to slow down their tempo by making you tap out turn two for that paltry Geistflame or Tragic Slip. If they're going first, Gut Shot after she resolves is really the only way to get around that. And Gut Shot will be leaving us soon. The fact that she accomplishes that on a 2/1 first strike body for 2 mana and low color weight is stellar.

@Blaze: True. This is actually tasteful. The bikini warriors from past sets and the bondage-gear angels from Zendikar were just embarrassing.

Also, everyone, see that pose Thalia is striking?

The flavor is *** amazing.

EDIT:

The poses are similar because the art on both cards was made by the same artists. That's it. My new goal in life is to make a deck centered on consistently slapping an Angelic Destiny on Thalia and winning with her every game.

I would just like to make the point that on the play against UB Control this girl is INSANE!
Turn 1: Doomed Traveler or Champion Of The Parish or a Savannah Lions type creature.

Turn 2: Thalia, while your opponent is sat on one land, who is now wincing at their 2Blue Mana Leak

Turn 3: Grand Abolisher to pretty much lock your opponent out for the next few turns, then bash in.

Turn 4: Proceed to play either Honor Of The Pure, Mirran Crusader or Hero Of Bladehold and continue to beat the snot out of any control player standing in your way.

If I could rate higher than 100, I would.

I think people are underestimating the cards that can play around this card in the comments here. Doom blade is an alright card, but Fume Spitter and Forge Devil are removal spells completely unaffected by her. She won't run rampant and unchecked in Standard. Which is a good thing, because I hate cards that do that, and I like this card.

I love this card in terms of function, flavour and art (standing stalwart against the sorceries of the sinful, much?), but there's just a single detail that drives me to distraction: her scabbard is COMPLETELY wrong for her sword :P Sounds pathetic I know, but it's just such perfect art except for that.

This is my favourite card in Standard right now. It slows down both aggro (the ability slows down burn and the two power first strike means she beats everything hasty Rakdos and lives to tell the tale) and control (usually no counters until turn four and no board sweepers until turn five). If you're playing white and she doesn't undermine your own strategy, you want to run three (not four, since she's legendary).

Worst case scenario, she gets burned at a higher-than-usual price, and a two drop mana draining removal magnet is fine by me, because that means that the Silverblade Paladin I'm about to play might stick.

Let's go around the color pie of what can take care of an opponents Thalia in standard:
White: Oblivion Ring
Blue: Cyclonic Rift
Black: Ultimate Price
Red: Pillar of Flame
Green: Prey Upon
But now, Pillar costs {1R}, Prey Upon costs {1G}, Rift costs {2U}, Ultimate Price costs {2B}, and Oblivion Ring costs {3W}!
Now THAT is power.

So what is the ruling on Changeling Spells? It's a creature and an Instant/Sorcery. Does it just end up costing the same amount of mana as is printed on the card? I guess it will cost the 1 extra because it is identified as a Noncreature spell in some way, sort of similar to how a multicolored creature is all the colors in it's mana cost, and vice-verse.
MisterAction
★★★★☆ (4.5/5.0) (1 vote)
@filmfanaticryan: If you're referring to noncreature spells with changeling (like Crib Swap or Nameless Inversion), Thalia will still make them cost 1 more. Changeling gives a spell every creature subtype, but it doesn't add any types (instant, sorcery, enchantment, creature, etc.) or supertypes (basic, legendary, creature).

By that same reasoning, creature spells with changeling (like Shapesharer) will not cost extra by Thalia's doing.

Don't like this for white soldier rush, cause it interferes with tokens.
However, perfect for Boros decks. Not color intensive, and all Boros is is creature spells pretty much.

Her + Ruric Thar = butthurted spell players. She would fit into that zoo- Domri-creature Deck, on the downside that you can't cast her for free with Burning-Tree Emissary.

@patronofthesound, Best EDH General? I don't think that's the case.

Thalia is not a good card to play in EDH, never mind as a general. As a general, you'd either have to play around a mostly creature-based deck, or accept a 1White-costed Swords to Plowshares. However, adding 1 to each non-creature may not be that big a deal. I mean, it is EDH: most games go until turn 10... at least.

And there's the other reason why you wouldn't play Thalia: her effect isn't big enough. In Standard and Modern, she turns Lightning Bolt's into Searing Spear's. Or Mana Leak's into... uhh, Sage's Dousing's?

But in EDH, it turns Wrath of God into a psuedo Rout, and I'm pretty sure people play Rout.

In short, she's a good spell for faster formats, and it's hard to argue whether Thorn of Amethyst is better. Artifacts are easier to play and harder to remove, but it doesn't act as an effective attacker/blocker.

Protector of Thraben, making non-creature spells cast more? Get the flavor? Neither do I...
nonetheless, it is a wonderful card, but I'm a Vorthos and this just doesn't strike me as flavorful, which legendary creatures should be
she should have some anti-zombie thing, as they were facing a zombie army at the moment, or an effect that makes all the creatures of the night in the set cost more as the guardian of the holy city of Thraben
instead she has this effect...which is awesome, and combined with costing 1White and having first strike is even better, but it's just...blah flavor-wise, because Thraben wasn't being attacked by mages, but monsters
also, I was playing the Innistrad Human deck in Duels of the Planeswalkers, and it does inhibit in certain ways
the whole point of that deck is to be fast, and making it so 2 mana noncreature spells cost 3 does actually make a difference

Personally, I would have had her say "Non-Human creature spells cost 1 more to cast" but I'm sure design had some reason for her to nerf cards that could help the humans fight the monsters while doing little to nerf the monsters themselves. Also, she was mentioned to be a Knight-Cathar in Innistrad, yet here she is a Soldier?

@ progenitus5: My view on the flavor is that the power of her righteousness directly opposes the dark magic of her foes, much like Grand Abolisher's ability. Of course, the mechanic affects your own sorceries as well; maybe she's a bit overzealous about what constitutes "unhallowed," or maybe righteousness isn't something you can turn on and off to suit your own needs, making the card very non-black.

Awesome card by the way. 5/5.
