Kills itself unless you have a target. Creature or player would have been nice.

He's cute alright, and pretty handy. But you can't actually play him turn 1 unless you go second. He doesn't say "May" do 1 damage, he HAS to do 1 damage or he explodes.

This will be the card that weeds out the noobies when DKA launches. Time to see how many people decide to go first and try to play this turn 1.

Yay-! Devil tribe support! :D

all the other Devils are over costed so I'd rather play Demons- this guy is great though!

Drops the 1 mana from sparkmage and picks up 1 damage to you. Attempts to teach newer players that life is worth less than mana, but Im not so sure the message came out so easily understable.

As far as utility rares go (like birds of paradise, grim lavamancer, etc etc) this beats the living crap out of them and I approve. I think it would be awesome if this common made it into standard sideboards, although the likelihood is slim.

With the large number of x/1 running around this should be playable. Good card.

I found him to be most useful as a Morbid enabler. When he comes into play he can just deal his damage to himself if your opponent has no good targets, and because he only cost you one mana, you will still have plenty of mana up for casting a Morbid spell.

@ Pick15

Assuming you have enough red mana, of course.

This guy worked great at the prerelease. If on the draw, it could easily deal with other 1-drops, and mid-late game it worked as a wonderful 1-mana morbid trigger. Did get to watch two other people drop in turn one, then see their "Wait... damn" faces.

T1: Kill your Birds of Paradise.
Instant +1 card advantage.

Don't think of it as a 1/1 creature. Think of it as a 1 damage burn that gives you a chump blocker for a single life of yours.

Somehow, I have a feeling this silly thing is better than it looks. Does a nice job popping birds, various 1/1 dorks, and so on.

This card can drop any of the 1 toughness creatures and still be a chump blocker, or be a 1 mana morbid trigger. I don't know why this card has such a low rating.

so can I use onyx mage ability with this guy's ability? or would the damage already be dealt before he comes into play?

So what would happen if player 1 casts Forge Devil and targets a 1/1 creature controlled by player 2, and in response to this cast, player 2 casts a spell that grants protection from color of choice and chooses red? Will the damage just not occur, or will the spell fizzle, causing forge devil to go to the graveyard?

Gregg,

The spell would still be cast, its caster would take 1 damage, and the opponent's creature would be okay but he would have to target himself with the ability as he becomes the only legal target. Since the card does not list the 1 damage to the opponent's creature as a requirement or additional casting cost of the card it can still be cast.

Essentially the way it works is unless the card says you can't cast it unless you fulfill certain conditions, the spell resolves. If it has effects upon being cast all effects take place so long as there is a valid, legal, available target. If there is no target then the effect simply does not take place as they are a result of the casting, not a requirement of the casting.

@ Alphagprime, I don't believe that's right.

Say you have a Mother of Runes that can tap. Let's sayI cast a Forge Devil and you allow it to resolve. When its ETB trigger goes on the stack, if you activate the Mother's ability targeting the Mother and give it protection from red, the ability fizzles, as the target is no longer a legal target. It doesn't change the target, it just counters the damage ability. If your opponent tapped Mother to give itself protection from red when you cast Forge Devil, then as it comes into play, Forge Devil is the only legal target. It must deal 1 damage to itself and the subsequent 1 damage to you.

I believe you still take one damage regardless, as there isn't a conditional clause to get you out of that. You could escape the one damage if it said, "When Forge Devil enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to target creature. If it does, Forge Devil deals one damage to you." This is awkward wording, but it does exist on some cards to allow for caveats in triggered and activated abilities to account for certain conditions, though most are "may" abilities.

So, Greg, if they respond to you casting with a Stave Off or some protection card, choosing your only other legal target, Forge Devil will resolve, choose itself (the only legal target) and ping itself and you for one damage. If they cast it upon resolution of your Forge Devil with the ETB trigger, nothing gets pinged and you take one damage.

I hope this helps, and correct me if I'm wrong.

Red 1 drop that can kill tons of utility creatures? Why is this rated so low?

This guy deserves some credit guys, he kills just about every other one drop in standard today. All for jut 1 measly mountain and a life. Id say it's a good price considering tragic slips are meant for big scary things, not arbor elves and blood artists.

Kills http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&format=|&tough=+=1

But most importantly, with this guy in your deck you really want to be on the DRAW. T1 kill your Birds of Paradise, Delver of Secrets, Llanowar elves, Avacyn's pilgrim, champion of the parish, judge's familiar, and a large number of goblins.

So if it kills so many things that are winning in standard right now... why is it rated so low? Because he doesn't win the game on his own? Isn't not losing the game just as important?

No reason to make such a controversial creature type... No reason to even go there at all. I have a hard enough time to explain to my church why I play a game called "Magic"... now its got creatures called devils....

A one-drop in Red that can kill mana dorks, utility dorks, and any X/1s that are going to get big and scary if they're killed right f***ing now? Or he can kill himself so you can trigger Morbid? And all it costs is {R} and one life?

The only real downside to him is that there's only one card in Red that uses Morbid, so using him as a trigger in mono-R just doesn't work.

So, this thing has a rather interesting synergy with Nightshade Peddler, taking it from an on-the-draw neat trick, to becoming much more relevant in the late game. Give it a try, works surprisingly well, especially in pauper.

I really like the design on this guy, he kills himself if you don't have a target, but when you do you can often get a lot of value out for 1 mana. It's nice for finishing off a creature after combat or burn too.
