Bloodbraid Elf into Blightning? I'll just drop two of these.

Tee hee.

The new 4x4. Arguably even better than ravenous baloth.

Basking Rootwalla anyone? Madness 0? Good card, not great in this set though.

What a beast. Poor discard spells, this guy and Wilf-Leaf Liege are worth running even when you aren't vs discard decks, that ability is icing on the cake.

With Vengevine and now this card I don't see Jund wanting to run Blightnings anymore.

What with the M10 rules about damage as-signments not going to the stack anymore, this is strictly better than Ravenous Baloth unless you're playing casual Beast tribal.

Not sure how many I'm going to maindeck but after sideboarding I'll have 4 against RDW and Jund. Just because I can. And oh boy if someone comes into FNM with that Nyxathid/Liliana's Caress deck...

First Vengevine, now this? That's right, screw you Blightning, your tyrannical hold over Standard shall not stand.

I love this and the Cyclops Gladiator. Not broken, but above the curve, with very useful abilities. Fun, solid, and I repeat NOT BROKEN.

Fauna Shaman doesn't work with this, note the "opponents control" clause. Otherwise, you could easily drop this turn one by not playing a land. Imagine what that would do to the whole of Magic.

got this thing discarded TWICE at the Launch party to Liliana's Specter. Awesome card

Love this card, so good with garruk's packleader, awesome momentous fall target, awesome anti discard, and at a cheap mana cost. He's one of the best rite of replication targets for another thing, and he makes my opponent regret their blightnings, and its more splashable than older cards which did similiar things. It also makes gw life gain decks with say felidar sovereign, ajanis mantra, serra ascendant, survival cache, leyline of vitality, and pelakka wurm very playable all of a sudden.

So since Chain of Smog says an opponent copies the spell, would I be able to use that as an easy turn 2 way of getting a baloth out, since they technically are the controller of the copied spell?

Another combo that would def. make this stud even more potent is playing it and then that turn or the next play kor skyfisher. You play your ob. baloth twice, that's double the life !!

You know, I don't get why this thing even gives you 4 life. :| It would have been perfect without it. Giving you that extra life rewards you further for something that was out of your control in the first place. So long Quagnoth.

"I'll play Mind Rot. Discard two."
"AWESOME, thank you. I'll gain 8 life and put two 4/4 guys out."

Discard might not be nearly as fun to play while this guy's in Standard.

The funny thing is, you are actually discarding him onto the battlefield. It doesn't replace the word discard.

This guy loves Blightning. Worst-case scenario, you discard a card but you still have a net gain of 1 life.

I have to disagree with the applause for this card. The ability to come out via discard is highly situational. The extra life is ok, but the drawback is that its a simple 4/4 creature

Imo, Obstinate Baloth compares unfavorably with Cudgel Troll. Regenerate > 4 Life, +1 Toughness

Great card! Four life isn't anything to sneeze at. Out of lightning bolt range. Mana curve average.

At best 4 in your mainboard. At worst 4 in your sideboard to mainboard if your opponent has a discard deck.

Got to save up some money....

My Favorite M11 Card The Art The Body Overall BigTime Killer And Discard Decks Can Be Rough If Your Not Preparred So He's A Great Answer Str8 Up Maindeck Cuz Seriously If You Carry A Sideboard With Ya Your LAME

MasterOfEtherium, sideboards are used for cards like "Enchant red or green creature" or "destroy all islands" or something like that. For example, doom blade against a mono-black deck is useless. You put it in your sideboard so you don' have a useless card with you.

This will easily see play just to counter jund's blightnings, but once that rotates out this will probably drop. It'll still be good vs RDW, but not against much else and it'll be stuck as a sideboard card at best unless SoM has a discard spell as broken as blightning.

Hes good enough to be put in maindeck. 4/4 body is great, + u get 4 life with a free madness against opponets. Wheres the drawback? Am i missing something?

Solid sideboard choice makes you not want to play black//red discard in standard. Not only do u negate any damage u take from Liliana's Caress, now they have a 4/4 body threat they are forced to deal with. Probably by burning a nuke or sacking a nighthawk. Such a monster card advantage with no drawback.

Ide put 4 in mine but theres no room.

Plummet to shut down an early Serra Ascendant.
Naturalize To stop myr or quest decks.
Devout Lightcaster To deal with vampires and friends.
And 3 Terra Stomper's against heavy counters.

Feel free to give suggestions for today's standard. Thanks

AWWWW YEAH.

FREE MADNESS COST YOU CAN'T CAUSE YOURSELF.

Very fun card, definitely ties in with the "obstinate" aspect of it's name. It is very stubborn and it refuses to enter the graveyard without having a chance to wreak havoc.

Oh, it's a 4/4 that gives you 4 life too. c :

This is not madness 0. This is worse than madness because it has to be an opponent making you discard.

That being said, still very good.

I don't think that this guy is better or worse than leatherback baloth. I simply run both in my decks. :) at least I don't have to run enormous baloth anymore...ugh...

This card is an absolute backbreaker against red-based aggro decks from Zoo to Red Deck Wins. Bigger than all their creatures, and undoing at least one card's worth of burn is a hidden form of card advantage. The seldom-relevant discard ability is just icing on the cake.

Discard?

A solid card for a RG attrition deck. When you are flinging damage at everyone, you need to have a way to stay on top. Getting an beefy attacker/blocker and 4 life in one efficient package is wonderful.
In many decks you could play this over the top of one or two manabarbs without a net loss in life. And it counteracts two-thirds of the damage having two spiteful visions would cause.

Yesterday night I forgot that it has to be and opponent controlled ability and I was like OMG so many easy ways to CHEAT THIS ABSOLUTE BEAST IN TURN ONE THIS GAME HAS GONE ANYWHERE

further reasoning lead me to think that you couldn't do that :P

and yet, it's a clear 5/5 rating. very solid, and it makes being hymn to tourached much more fun!!!

Four life doesn't really do anything in a beatdown deck... It is nice that an opponent making you discard has this creature come into play and they did make it not broken by having the "opponent" clause on there. Card is pretty good but there are many cards much better.

No downside to this card to this card really, pretty great anti-discard ability and the 4 life lets you take a hit or two.

The discard hate is quite nice but the life gain is actually extremely handy in grindy matchups. It's tough to choose between him and Loxodon Smiter; as they shore you up against different things. The fact that this guy isn't vulnerable to Abrupt Decay is one of my favorite reasons to use him.

I think people who compare him to Thragtusk are missing the point. This guy's whole purpose is color hate against many of the best spells ever printed (Hymn, Lily, Bolt, Decay.) If this guy lands for free, it's win/win; if they side out their discard, it's also win/win; you play uninterrupted.

In casual modern play, it annoys the crap out of me to play against literally the same 8 decks over and over again when there are limitless possibilities (which is fine in Tournaments, but casual? come on). When I started playing MTG in 1996, there was such a thing as creativity, which was part of the fun. My favorite thing about this card is how it hoses so many "net decks". Let's list what this card hoses:

Discard/Rack
Jund/Liliana of the Veil - killing Liliana with Obstinate Baloth is one of my favorite plays in MTG
Burn (especially those playing haste creatures)
Tribal (especially goblins)
Zoo

Being fairly resistant to undercosted removal is also quite nice. Also quite easy to get three-for-ones (discarded by liliana, blocks and kills tarmagoyf, lightning bolted). An absolute 4-of in my sideboards, and some maindecks.
