this set is a sequal to planar chaos. Blue gets creature exile, green gets spot removal for permanents and now black has another basic mass removal?

So you play with four copies of a titan. One of them is on the field, oh well I just kill those.

I know on my "kitchen table" this would be followed up by Haunting Echoes. And then a duck-block as a deck of cards is thrown at my face.

this could go well with a card to steal creatures from an opponents graveyard.

Black has mass removal again (You could argue that Black Sun's Zenith was, too, but that was semi-conditional).
Let's be honest, when black gets mass removal, a lot of people become extremely happy.

I haven't played a black deck in ages, but it seems to be time. This card plus rise from the grave, and memoricide among others should be good times. It just seems built for squadron hawks too.. like oh you got all 1 squadron hawk out? I nuke the field, and I remove your other 3 squadron hawks while I'm at it. Also possibly best card ever for a surgical extraction follow up. Black once again has the best removal in the game between this, black sun zenith, grasp of darkness, and dismember. Nothing anyone can play between turns 1-5 will have a high enough toughness not to get sent to the graveyard whether it's indestructible, or can be regenerated. Maybe I will play green black white, with that new centaur shaman commander card, and also throw in a phyrexian rebirth for mass wrath madness.

Seriously, majinara?

It's a great card in Limited. Wipes the board and removes the three biggest threats your opponent has left in their library.

Ditto for Commander - another black mass removal will be appreciated by many. And of course, other casual formats should like it too.

It could very well find a place in Standard, and even Extended. Even if it's only a sideboard card, it still wouldn't be unusable.

Evaluating every card according to Legacy/Vintage is just silly. By that logic, you could probably count on one hand the number of "good" cards in the entire BLOCK.

Because you can NEVER have too many Black field-wipes.

What irks me most, is that when cards like this are printed, the White players try to tell me this is a White effect.

First, I'd like to point out Consume the Meek (which would probably be 1BB if it weren't instant), Plague Wind, Black Sun's Zenith, Decree of Pain, Hex, and Dregs of Sorrow. While these aren't all necessarily utter board wipes, they're still Black massacre spells.

Second, I'd like to point out that red has Lightning Bolt/Shock and Pyroclasm. Even the flavor text of Pyroclasm begs for Black, who has the Lightning Bolt of kill-spells, to have field wipes. Because, honestly, who'd want to kill things one at a time?

I prefer Decree of Pain if I want powerful removal.
I prefer Damnation if I want efficient removal.
Why would I want this then? Even if I play a deck that likes to steal creatures from an opponents graveyard: I won't know what for a deck my opponent will play, and thus I won't know if my opponent has any good creatures in his deck. Or any creatures at all.
1/5

@ nemokara: Of course it's good in limited. So what? If it's only usable in limited, and I can throw it away after the event, then that's a good thing? For commander, you'd use Decree of Pain or Damnation, and not this. I like cards that a) I can play in my favorite formats (like Commander/EDH) or b) have a place in my decks for a long time. And this is neither.

{B}/{G} ramp deck. Sit behind a wall of tanglecord. Ramp to this guy.

Start pumping out Geth, Sheoldred, Liege of the Tangle, the Chancelor's ect. Seems like an easy enough deck to make. And should be a great option for budget players.

How ironic. Just yanked two of these and a foil Sword of War and Peace in a single New Phyrexia Fat Pack yesterday - the day of the "apocolypse".

Great card! I'll be using these in my BlueBlack control deck alongide Surgical Extraction. I <3 New Phyrexia. 5/5

B3 for Damnation that allows regeneration... that's nice
B1 for creature restricted and much more efficient Sadistic Sacrament... that's nice too
... having it in one card, saving spots in your deck for something else? Yes, I want this! Really sweet... and I love the artwork.

Damnation's hatin'.

I'm actually very glad that they printed this. U/B control needs a Wrath of God type card with having to pay stupid amounts to kill fatties (Black Sun's Zenith) or only kill weenies (Consume the Meek).

That, and it has a 3 card Surgical Extraction strapped to it. Nuke the board, then steal their bombs from their library.

@Majinara If you don't like this card, don't play it. Go spend $80.00 on Damnation playset.

As for the card itself, its epic. I would like it better if you could search anybody's library so you could throw your beasts ready for reanimation in it, but this is good too. In some control decks you can get rid of their sole win condition.

I run this and grimoire of the dead in a black green with lots of deathtouch stuff. Stalls until I can kill everything and the best 3 cards in an opponents library and then BOOM. Evil man.

I've never seen Majinara post a positive comment. I'm sure he has, mind you, just that I've never seen it. I guess he forgets Commander likes near-functional reprints.

Considering how black is the color of death, it is amazing how few board-wipes it gets. This one is better than it looks; while expensive, the ability to remove 3 additional creatures is great in slower formats like Commander. It is also a solid budget choice for folks who can't afford to shell out $20 per Damnation.

Underrated. I run x4 in my BlueBlack control deck. It wins games, but it needs to be supported with other things to survive until 6 cc.. Which normally is not a problem. I win allot verse money decks with my 0 creature deck in standard. Heck I just accidentally joined a classic game and one of the dudes lands was more expensive then my entire deck. Game went on 15 turns and I won the game on the back of this baby.

This can easily backfire on EDH so hard. Many properly designed EDH decks use the graveyard in some way, and most will be able to recur creatures.

Probably my favorite thing to do with this card is follow it up with a Haunting Echoes. Use this and wipe the field, then search for one copy of each of their best stuff. Next turn, pop the Echoes and take most of the deck.

I love it when a plan comes together.

4/5.

I really like this card especially paired withTariel, Reckoner of Souls. Put three creatures in the grave that you can resurrect, good deal.

If your deck is designed around it, then the risk of pulling out creatures is much less meaningful when you have the reward of whatever you plan on doing with the creatures. Is it worth the 2 mana over damnation? Probably not. However, exchanging the anti-regeneration clause for getting vital information about your opponent's deck and potentially stealing or exiling the biggest threat they play is a good trade-off. In EDH, if you already know the opponent's deck well enough, you can tell if they have important cards in hand like Mycosynth Lattice or Tooth and Nail because they will be missing from their deck. The simple fact that this is $2 and damnation is over $40 pushes me in this direction. Any deck that wants this card isn't concerned about being killed before turn 6 anyways.
