seems solid. maybe get played in T2 a bit. as a cost 2 -1/-1 counter plus one each turn if nothing else. at least its uncommon Lux Cannon isn't good without charge counter acceleration, im looking at you profilerate

Pretty much anything with Proliferate is great consider you can choose which counters you can decide to put an extra one, on players, creatures, and Planeswalkers. It would be hilarious to see Elspeth Tirel been profliferated to use her Ultimatum against your opponents on te turn she comes in play.

I don't necessarily look at a card based on how it will work in block/T2, but how it will work in the wider range of environments. You put this in a deck with 1st Gen Mirrodin cards that have/create/manipulate counters...then think Power Conduit. Moreover, there are many effective ways to use this outside of just -1/-1 counters and charge counters. Level-up counters. Even nail your opponent's permanents that have cumulative upkeep (yes, that's a counter too). The only reason I don't give it a 5-star rating is because the activation cost is high. 2 mana would be broken. 3 mana would be perfect (in my world). The beauty is you choose which permanents get the boost. That's a very, very powerful aspect of Proliferate in general when you consider the nature of most global-reaching effects in the game. It may be underrated in the long run, though, by players who don't know how to use it to its full potential.

I was always happy to draw this card, even when facing down an empty board. That 4 mana activation cost is killer, though. Any deck that plans to run this had better have a plan to fuel it. My limited deck didn't/couldn't. Everflowing Chalice would be an excellent choice. That said, paying four mana to give a player a poison counter seems unusually slow.

Cosi's trickster, This, Grand architect, trinket mage into (idk brittle effigy) trickster/architect/mage = mana to proliferate..throw down jace and a contagion engine with counterspell back up = gg

Cute card. Not that strong, but playable and versatile, especially great for multiplayer politics. 3.5/5

The thing itself is probably usefull, part level, part canteen, part decorative mutated horseshoe crab replica.

I feel this card is awesome, a proliferate machine non-stop, and can slowly kill a big guy

Like the big brother contagion engine better. 4 mana for a proliferate once is a bit steep, it'll cost you 36 mana to kill the opponent from one poison counter. I know it's turn 2 drop, but still... I donøt know, I should probably plat it before I decide. Might be need to have this in infect, since you can quickly run out of cards with those small creatures, and then still have something to spend your mana on. Interesting...
battled a guy used this with lux cannon and voltaic, it was brutal, got him down to 1 health, but then he got his combo going and dead locked me.

Storm Crow is no match for the -1/-1 Proliferate combo!

Proliferate will probably become a staple in legacy in vintage formats because so many sets use counters in some form or another, and this card lets you use them all.
Quest counters for some of the harder conditions to fill, or just to speed up the process
Level up counters
Lands with depletion counters or something like it
Add time counters to your opponent's suspended cards
The list goes on, and I have every confidence that going forward, this card will only get better.
If the activation cost bothers you, make it an artifact creature and use Training Grounds.

Maybe run in a modern Elf deck? Joraga Warcaller and Oran-Rief the Vastwood say hi!

It gives removal, something elves don't have easily, combined with crazy-huge elves from the Warcaller

it's true environment is being surrounded by lots of artifacts that like charge counters. I play a dedicated proliferate deck at my FNM standard tournaments, and I find that the clasps are good for tiding you over until you get out the contagion engine or some other bomb. The 4 cost is painfully high, but on the other hand it's really hard to get rid of. Thrummingbird bites the dust rather easily, but the clasp actually kills an opponent's creature. If you have out an everflowing chalice, after the first few times the proliferate almost pays for itself--especially if you have multiple chalices. Overall, I couldn't run my proliferate deck successfully without these; they're a staple.

But yeah, poison and -1/1 counters... not the best use for proliferate. Definitely charge counters and loyalty counters... really need to get my hands on the new tezzeret!

I got this and Contagion Engine in the same booster.

I use this and contagion engine. I have 10 infect creatures in my current deck and everything is built around a couple of counters on the player and throwing out mana for proliferate - i dont worry too much about the creatures and chump block (regen viper) alot of them by the point i can bring the engine out - then its a proliferate or 2 on the player to reach 10 infect counters - win!

As long as you dont mind chump blocking you can pretty much ensure the win. When the next set with the new infect creatures comes out it'll be a very strong strategy with some big creatures to push in the end game.

Perhaps a dumb question regarding proliferate. If I proliferate a planeswalker, does it's (+1) ability activate?

Probably to much to hope for, but ...

Not suprising that it is effective with the original Contagion.

Yes this is absolutely about the Killing side of the card. Makes mono-blue control have a way of getting rid of annoyances that slipped under your scope for instance.

best used for proliferate through Throne of Geth

and if you are desperate enough, you can always pay the 4 for a proliferate ;)

Turn two Clasp your guy, turn three Tumble Magnet your next guy (forever) is pretty great, even in Standard Constructed. In Limited or Block it's one of the best sequences of play.

@StevenF: No, proliferating the counters on your planeswalker does not activate its +1 ability. You have to actually use the planeswalker's ability to do that. Proliferating would simply increase the number of counters with no other effect. Not that doing so is a bad thing, since the more counters the planeswalker has, the better off you are in almost any scenario. It gets you one step closer to using the ultimate ability, or simply gives your planeswalker one more point of damage he can absorb.

when playing with old cards some strange interactions show up. I wonder how many people other than myself have used this to hold off Divine Intervention?

Also, need an excuse to rock some homelands cards? Pull out your old serrated arrows and watch the synergy fly.

I don't understand the card quite well. Can I put anykinds of counters into the permanents or basically it just doubles the amount of counters ina permanent or only add one more counter of a kind a permanent already has?

A cheap removal spell always hurts. Contagion Clasp, even if you don't kill the creature, can just proliferate until the creature does die. While I would put Contagion Engine over this card just because it's practically a bomb, the Clasp has good stuff up its sleeve.

This card is soo damned good in a deck that uses counters...

Pay 4 mana to
Add -1/-1 counter on opponent's creature
Add a Posion counter
Add a counter on planeswalker (Jace Beleren)
Add a Charge Counter on Everflowing Chalice
Add a Charge Counter on Tumble Magnet.

You do all these things with only 4 mana, very cost efficient, just doing only 2-3 of these actions for 4 mana is good enough.

The more I look at this card, the more I like it. It can even be used in a fungus deck to speed up the growth of your saprolings. Even better when you've got Doubling Seasons too.

This should be seeing more play in the current standard. Standard is dominated by 1 toughness creatures right now, and if gutshot is seeing play, a card that sticks around after it's done its job for ANY reason, is just as good in my book.
