Using this withGlorious Anthem leaves you with absurd amounts of 2/2 tokens.

Even more fun is Sigil Captain, which leaves you with 3/3s.

Totally unfair in Limited. If you play it for WW5 or more - which is a very reasonable amount of mana in Limited - you just win. Every time.

See also: Lavalanche, which is even more unfair because you never have to sandbag creatures and it's a blowout on as little as 6 or even 5 mana.

Please stop making cards like this.

Lol, you think that's bad? I have a deck I play in Casual that has this + Crucible of Worlds, Fastbond, and Zuran Orb, which basically means I can do this for infinite (you tap a land for Mana, sac for two life, bring it back with Crucible and repeat with Fastbond, which only does 1 damage to you so you come out ahead by 1 life each time you do it, so you also gain infinite life).

Amazing artwork and flavor. Also field advantage as mentioned previously.

At first this card turned me off because it's effect would kill off all of my creatures too. Now I realize that tends not to matter in most cases, since your opponent is left with nothing and you've got at least 5 soldier tokens that might be effected by Honor of The Pure or Glorious Anthem, or what have you. Coat of Arms maybe? Plus this card could really save the day if you're in a pinch.

I really want to run this with Ghost Away

-Army combo-

Coat of Arms+Conqueror's Pledge (not kicked)+Martial Coup(X mana paid=5)=

-10 soldiers in total (Martial Coup+Conqueror's Pledge)
-Destroy all opposing creatures (Martial Coup)
-Every single one of the 10 soldiers is +11/+11 (Coat of Arms), thus, total combat damage= 110 combat damage damage
-Mana cost: 12 (Martial Coup+Conqueror's Pledge)
-Impractical combo

Optional:
-Add Dauntless Escort in case the other player uses a AoE destruction spell
-Add Sigil Captain or Armament Master to add more salt to the other player's wounds :P (in fact you can use these two cards in place of Coat of Arms but the total combat damage will be 40)

No, forget everything else- Martial Coup with an Eldrazi Monument in play. You get five soldiers, and the opponent's creatures are dead. That's a play, and easily achievable in a G/W deck.

Combos with Eldrazi Mounument. Yet another reason I think Eldrazi Green should be Eldrazi Green-White.

This also goes really well with Cauldron Of Souls and Sigil Captain...that's if you don't want to let go of your creatures.

woow.. that dont seem balanced, does it? wrath of god is four mana, and this is 7.. so for three more mana which is noot that hard to get your getting instant field advantage, and with a coat of arms on the field.. gg.

blah blah blah. combo this, combo that. how about, this card is scalable, versatile and capable of getting you out of a pinch, but also can help you solidify an approaching win.

all in all, i would be happy to top deck this card at any point late game, and pretty sure it can't hurt early game. have my opponent waste maelstrom pulse on the tokens.

A knight deck with Knight Exemplar and you have super field advantage. You'll lose the Knight Exemplar...but if you have two.....super win.

have Honor of the Pure out on your side and you get 5 2/2 tokens after a Wrath of God. This card should be a staple in Type 1 white weenie or soldier decks. 5/5

This was the main catalyst for a huge turnaround I saw in a casual game. The player who used it was facing one of the best modular/token artifact decks ive seen and was getting destroyed, at 1 life he managed to get Pariah Shield on Cho-Manno, the next turn he played Indestructibility on Cho-Manno and played this; the other player was, needless to say, stunned.

Good thing we have nifty tools like Pyroclasm, Volcanic Fallout, Infest, Pyrohemia, and Pestilence to keep the peace.

How about extended legal:

Turn 1: Plains, Memnite

Turn 2: Plains, Gold Myr

Turn 3: Plains, Gold Myr, Gold Myr

Turn 4: Plains, Myr Galvanizer, Myr Galvanizer

Turn 5: Silence, Infinite Coup

@PhyrexianAdvocate: Ignoring the fact that it's a ridiculous god hand, it's also slower and uses more cards than it needs to. Try this instead for Extended:

Turn 1: Mountain, Figure of Destiny
Turn 2: Forest, Bloom Tender
Turn 3: Island, Crab Umbra to Bloom Tender, tap and untap for infinite mana, float a million white and two red out of it, Martial Coup for lots, kicked Goblin Bushwhacker.

Still a ridiculous god-hand, no-enemy-removal scenario though.

Does not play well with Child of Alara. :(

(Still fun to play in EDH.)

If you were going to Bloom Tender + Crab Umbra for infinite mana, you might as well just run a direct damage red spell such as Brightflame with Autumn's Veil covering and ignore the entire idea of Martial Coup all together, seeing as you need to run a 4 to 5 color deck just to have the infinite mana combo work (Read Bloom Tender's rules; You only get a maxium of (B)(U)(G)(R)(W) from tapping it). When you have infinite mana you ramp into direct damage or life gain spells, anything else is a waste, unless you draw the majority of your deck into your hand as well just in the event the ramp spell is countered.

Regarding this card by itself, it's scary. Wrath of God is a rare that costs 2WW and yet this thing is that card + five 1/1 soldiers if you only pay 3 more (5WW). This should have been a mythic rare. It only takes a well placed Doubling Season or Parallel Lives prior to dropping this to make that at least 10 tokens and field advantage. Let's not forget there are seveval cards that boost tokens or just creatures in general (Caged Sun comes to mind).

Mind you it is a late game play kind of card, but you typically would find the need to board wipe mid to late game anyway, otherwise you focus on getting your Condemn or Oblivion Ring out early to stop the worst of the early drops, as you always hope for.

To me, White Sun's Zenith just looks sad in comparison to this card, despite the fact that WSZ will shuffle up your deck, is reusable (as long as it does not get countered or milled into your graveyard), and gives you 2/2 tokens vs the 1/1 tokens. Not that WSZ is overall bad, this card just makes it feel like one of the two needs to cost one W more or less. Soldiers have more power when you consider playing a Captain of the Watch, Catapult Master, Field Marshal, after a Martial Coup. I'd have suggested Leyline of the Meek, if it was not for the fact it helps the opponent(s) out as well, which is bad if it's token deck VS token deck. Soldiers are just better tokens than cats.

@Salient: Darksteel Plate your child and it is not an issue anymore. Also, in EDH CoA would go into your Commander Zone, so the ability to destroy the field never goes off... EVER, unless you chose to put CoA into the graveyard instead.

A fun card, particularly in Commander where its high cost is not a problem.

Best use of this card ever in my Commander games: Opponent has a bunch of creatures in play and all I have is a Leyline of Anticipation. He casts a "destroy all lands" effect, I cast this with Flash in response... all the creatures die, I get a pile of tokens, and then all the lands died. Yep, I won that game... ouch!

Wrath of Soldiers.
In all seriousness though, this card is amazing with Benalish Commander. Drop it before the turn he comes out, and laugh manically.

This card is pretty brutal. 1 Honor of the pure and it forces opponent to blow a wrath or loose after you just wrathed.

This is one of those "I win" cards. I had an opponent at 1 life, I had removed all of his creatures, and I had 4 4/4's coming across next turn, he plays this, hits me for 5 each turn until I'm dead because I draw nothing but lands and a small creature he removes. I generally don't like "I win" cards, but this one is just slow torture.

Such a strong card. I use it in my Tajic EDH deck which uses tons of board wipes because he is indestructible. This card clears the board, but also gives me battalion.
