I prefer Reanimate, but I threw four of these into my U/B reanimator.
Dread Return requires an additional black mana, disqualifying it from being "strictly better".

sure, it may not be as good as the other reanimate spells, but if you're playing sheoldred turn 4 I don't think you'll be complaining.

Dread Return and Vigor Mortis are both better cards than this. Not strictly better, but they're the same converted mana cost, can be played mostly in the same decks, and offer additional options. Dread Return can technically be played for free (free being no mana), and Vigor Mortis is nice for decks that care about +1/+1 counters. However, splashability makes this card stand out.

@blindthrall - it's a way to get expensive creatures(or creatures you don't have mana for - bring in a blue creature in a mono-black deck) from your graveyard onto the battlefield. Use something like Putrid Imp to discard costly creatures into your graveyard and bring them into play for less.

Why the hell does this get so few reprints? It's reasonably costed. It's blacker than the ace of spades. It's simple enough for the core set. It teaches people the value of re-animator without being broken as hell...Reanimate I'm talking atchoo. Animate Dead is too complex. Vigor Mortis is multicoloured. Dread Return has Flashback. Just print this...the kids will get it.
