This is one of my favorite cards from Time Spiral block. Anything that can make me lose a game after I attack with Akroma and Maelstrom Archangel with my opponent at 8 life is worth note.

I like the combination of this and Pyroclasm. Very cheap way to destroy the opponent's creatures, with few casualties of my own.

A nasty surprise for your opponent if he enjoys keeping you at 1 life, ready to ping you with a tim. Whoops, your tim is now a vanilla creature, pyroclasm!

This is what you do when your opponent drops an Overrun.

@Etragan
how exactly would this work against an Overrun? Because the Overrun is trying to give them all +3/+3 but sudden spoiling is making them all 0/2s. So would they all just be 3/5s or does the time stamp from the Ovverrun cause it to be over ruled by the Sudden Spoiling?

Thos timestamp/stack rules always get wonky with stuff like this.

This is what happens when a Sorceress Queen gets mad :D

You're right about the "worst" use of this card, ICEFANG13.
Yet i'd personally call a "black Fog or Holy Day" simply "Darkness" ;)
And opposed to these spells it also prevents any non-combat damage which is based on the creatures' power, so if your opponent tries to fling a creature at you for instance that won't hurt this turn. Thanks to Split second, your opponent can't prevent that spell from resolving either.

Best solution I know of to Progenitus. Because his "can't go to graveyard" effect goes away when he dies :) As far as I know it is the only way to send the big guy to the graveyard. Wrath of God and such just send it back into the Library.

StagemasterK:

I believe you are thinking that Sudden Spoiling gives all creatures target player controls +0/+2, while in all actuality it is reducing each of the targeted player's creatures' power and toughness to 0 and 2, i.e. Hill Giant would become 0/2 even though it is a 3/3 normally; in other words, Sudden Spoiling works against Overrun in that it basically makes its casting a waste of the target player's mana.

Holy shit.. Incredible AoE card.

It's definitely something that would cripple almost any combo

Well, last time i checked you can't cast sorceries during your combat step, so youd see overrun coming a mile away. Just cast this after they attack and voila. haha

This works well with gain control spells against shroud creatures since it gets rid of shroud, then you can persuade/control magic/whatever the hell you want to take control or destroy it.

playing it with a pyroclasm is pretty obvious, but, what about the split second? how exactly does that work? i mean players cant play something in response is it? is that what this is all about? or does it not stack with pyroclasm? it looks too good to be true! can someone enlighten us pls? :p

@ StagemasterK He's saying that an opponent plays an Overrun and attacks with them all (Like player A attacks with 7 1/1's which are now 4/4's and have trample) and he plays it during the time to play instants after the declare attackers step (which turns them all into 0/2's with no abilities). It's not played as a response to it (making them into 7 2/4's with trample) but after Overrun is done resolving.

EDIT: No after checking the rules, the creatures would lose trample but not +3/+3 because continuous effects that set power and toughness are applied before continuous effects that alter it. Yes very complex.

And oh my goodness such a good card at worst its a black Fog or Holy Day. At best it makes a coordinated assault into a disaster.

i like to use it to make evryone a 0/2.

but seriosly, you can also use it on yourself if a creature hase some negitive effect your not quite rety to deal with, but i would rather use it on the oponit right before they try to wipe my field with the goblin sharpshooter gorgon flail combo just to watch them squerm when i then swing with the gient swarm he was trying to use it on for a total of over 89 damage. (ive done it befor) or to use it after swinging with a bunch of 1/1 goblins with ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician and they block with there 13/13's or there 10/10 pro everything or the 11/11 indestructible. ( my freind plays a behemoth deck where he almost never actualy playes anything for it's costs. aether rift, elvish piper, Dramatic Entrance.

This is an exceedingly good card, even when compared to cards like Ovinize and Snakeform. Each of these 3 cards have their own pros and cons compared to each other.

Sudden Spoiling
Pros:
—turns ALL creatures a target player controls
—split second, blocking out response spells
Cons:
—turns creatures into 2 toughness, which can be annoying if you can only ping them for 1 damage and not kill them (assuming that's what you want to do in the first place)

Snakeform
Pros:
—turns the creature GREEN until end of turn, which can take away many restrictions and open up possibilities (including 'non-color' restrictions)
—you get to draw a card as an instant as well
Cons:
—gives the creature 1 power, which can still do damage (even as low as it may be)
—it's very costly for a spell with only 1 target

Ovinize
Pros:
—lower mana cost than others
—turns a creature into the weakest possible creature, at 0/1, which is absolutely no threat in any way on its own and can be very easily disposed of
Cons:
—it has no extra effects and only targets 1 creature

I love how this card both has Split Second and deals with shroud/protection/activated abilities. The unwary control player is beside him/herself. Such great card design. This card will be cherished forever.

I don't think people understand something.
This card makes the creature(s) 0/2.
This is not including effects that are happening outside of the creatures (like Overrun).
It's like having a Snakeformed creature with Overrun out.
All this does is set the initial P/T, not what it's going to end up as.

I think one of the funniest things i've seen was when one of my opponent's in a multiplayer game had an indestrutible Platinum Angel with Shroud, pumped up to a 10/10. Topdecking this when he was sitting at -3 life was so amazing. Oh you can't lose the game...well NOW YOU CAN!

yes the overuning creatures would be 3/5. however I think they might lose the trample provided by overun.

★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
You need to play Sudden Spoiling after Overrun resolves.

Both Overrun's "gains trample" and Sudden Spoiling's "loses all abilities" are layer 6. They will be applied in timestamp order. Since Overrun resolved first. The creature will gain trample. Then it will lose all abilities.

However, Sudden Spoiling's P/T changing effect (layer 7) is in layer 7b, whereas Overrun's +3/+3 is in layer 7c. No matter what order they're played in, they'll be 3/5's (assuming no other effect was in play), since 7b always happen before 7c.

So what Sudden Spoiling will do to overrun (assuming you played it correctly), is remove trample and makde the opponent' creatures 3/5.

forget all your fancy rules interaction:

it's a 3-cc, instant speed spell that effects all your opponents' creatures negatively. WHATEVER IT DOES, it is at least 3 stars just based on THAT.

OK, NOW look at the rulesy side- it axes all abilities on that side of the table. bampf. 5 stars for that.

and it makes them all 2 toughness, plus shenanigans (Overrun, Tempered Steel, etc.)

I believe this card is what they call 'broken' alongside, what's her name...Ella? Eliza? no no no.

Elesh Norn. yeah that was it.

I've been in love with this cards since I saw it. It breaks the game wide open by taking all those goofy lockdowns, untouchable creatures etc. into something a simple Pestilence can board wipe.

Don't care how lame your combo is, it and everything else.. are dead.

1.) Things that remove abilities like this, as stated before, are real headaches to explain to people you play with because of all the wonkiness involving Auras and +1/+1 counters whatever else is being applied to the creature.

2.) What the heck. For 3 mana you get a card that not only eliminates all of a player's creatures' power, but gives them chump toughness and no abilities? And if that weren't enough it also can't be chained to, so once it's cast the enemy can't even do anything but just sit there and watch all their attacking cards die without even inflicting damage to any blockers. Or, you can even just choose not block at all if you play this card, since everything's power's become 0. Or, you can cast some "damage everything" card to nuke everything your opponent had...the list goes on and on.

Damage prevention, creature removal, ability negating...I'm sorry, even if it's a handy card to play I can't approve of this card for being just too powerful, versatile, and foolproof for such a low (and single color, I might add) cost. :/

I love this card. A creature with shroud is helpless against it. I use it to take down blightsteel with a 2/2 creature lol.
I do have one question about the rules though:
If I have down 2 Dragonspeaker shaman's and cast a creature that costs 7 so I only pay 3, and my opponent casts sudden spoiling would my creature spell still resolve?

The effect of this card is worth at least 3 stars IMO. Add to that the fact that it has Split Second, which (if nothing else) means that it can't be countered or anything annoying like that. That'll be another +1 in my book. Then, the fact that this only affects one player means you can use it to neutralize/crush/destroy your opponent's board while leaving your own unscathed ... that's another +1, bringing us up to a 5/5 card.

Steal Progenitus!

- Play this. Progenitus becomes a 0/2 with no abilities.

- Play some kind of destruction on it which does not exile it.

- As it has no abilities, it does not have the shuffle replacement effect. It does hit the yard.

- As soon as it is in the yard, Sudden Spoiling does not apply to it anymore, but now it is already there so it still does not get reshuffled (that would need something like "If at any time Progenitus is in the graveyard...").

- Since Protection works only on permanents, play Rise from the Grave and enjoy your Hydra Zombie Avatar!

This card is so good. It makes all your opponent's creatures vanilla 0/2 until the EOT and it has Split Second.

Split Second is one of the best abilities in the game and Wizards should bring it back.

This card references Sorceress Queen.

This was the only reason my Mono-Black Control deck didn't lose every single game it played against the Show and Tell for Emrakul, the Aeons Torn combo. Watching Emrakul die to a blocking Dark Confidant is satisfying. >:)

It also turns Griselbrand's "Pay 7 life: draw 7 cards" into "Nuh-uh: ain't gonna happen, bub."

What Sudden Spoiling doesn't do is protect you from an opponent using Sneak Attack to play a new copy of Emrakul or Griselbrand every single effin' turn. Blast you, Sneak and Show decks, blast you...

Timmy's worst nightmare.

I love this card so much. Split second is amazing, but this is the best of the best. I use it with a Black or Green infect deck I have (Not dating this post, infect is already old news) and the effect is terrifying.

Split second makes this an effective answer to any creature in the game. Cannot be countered, does not target, and eliminates any creature abilities. No matter what you are facing, this will effect it, and it will let you kill that creature. There are a couple possible loopholes, but they aren't the kind of cards you run into enough to even worry about it. With this in your deck, your opponents know that their creatures are not safe. The psychological effect of that alone makes this a worthy play against most opponents.

at worst its a fog with split second in a color that basically has no fog-like cards.

and with the new set (Return to Ravinca {dating this post}) electrickery turns this into a one-sided day of judgment for 1 more mana (seeing as the opponent has no pumps in place).

5/5

Edit:
@Missile_Penguin: not just Sorceress Queen but also Humble/Humility... but mostly Humble, due to the fact that it's the same ability, and it's shifted in color due to the block (despite in not actually truely being out of color for black with Sorceress Queen, and agruealby the color changing started in with planar chaos). All you basically do here is pay 1 more mana for split second, and make that mana colored black to have it apply to all of the opponent's creatures.

Wow, this card is such a catch-all that its utility continuously surprises me. Used to sideboard it in my modern deck, and now I maindeck 4. Control can't counter it, it buys me an extra turn against an alpha strike, it lets any of my guys kill Tarmogoyf, it stops indestructible, protection and regeneration, it lets me target hexproof, it prevents death triggers like Wurmcoil Engine, and it stops that obnoxious Melira-persist combo. Hell, I once used it to kill an opponent who was at negative life and hiding behind a Platinum Angel.

This would be playable even without split second. As is, it's a no-hesitation 5/5.
