Spike Feeder.

That's all. A two card, hard to disrupt infinite life combo. Ba-bahm.

Even the wicked have nightmares. Sorry Archangel of Thune, you're good and all, but they're probably not having nightmares of you. No offence, but you do have a big competitor.

I was thinking this would be good in my sanguine bond/sun droplet deck... then I saw what you, JSSarfin, put and I think I threw up in my mouth.

you could also use kitchen finks for infinite recursion... especially with a sac mechanism like Bloodflow Connoisseur.

4.5/5 ... but I want to make it 3/5 just because it's yet another angel from a core set that ruins the game and makes peoples wallets empty. So all in all, I'm rating it a 4.

Anything that's a 5-cost angel with a neat ability and isn't named Baneslayer gets a 5/5 in my book.

The fact she's literally this fantastic is just icing on the cake.

Nevermind the card's abilities for a sec (yeah, she's good I get that), but just look at that art. The color pallet and the composition on this piece are just gorgeous.

Would each extort ability count as a different instance of gaining, and therefore extorting a spell 5 times would cause 5 +1/+1 counters?

Probably obvious, but Soul Warden plus things like Gather the Townsfolk. Each creature coming into play procs a different life gain effect, meaning for two mana, you're getting two 1/1 creatures, and a permanent +2/+2 on everything you own.

@ about70hobos Yes, each instance of Extort is a different life gain effect.

I think a lower p/t on angels makes a lot more flavor sense, but that's just me.

@Kamishini:
G3.35d "If a permanent has both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it, N +1/+1 and N -1/-1 counters are removed from it, where N is the smaller of the number of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it"
So yes, +1/+1 counters do cancel out -1/-1 counters, although it wasn't always this way. It's true that this combos with Kitchen Finks, but it won't overshadow the cheaper and more Murderous Redcappy combo with Melira, Sylvok Outcast

@JSSarfin:
Not to mention making all of your other creatures arbitrarily large... Good thing Spike Feeder will probably never be in standard at the same time... In modern melira still is cheaper, although it needs 3 cards, so who knows?

As for the card, might be more fair if it said each other creature you control. But yeah... I think this is strong, but at least it has an interesting mechanic instead of just being insane, like Baneslayer Angel.
Hungerstriker
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
JSSarfin's combo is awesome, but he forgot to point out that it will give the archangel (and all your other creatures) infinite power and toughness.

Infinite life, infinite damage. And the combo can be repeated on demand at instant speed, so the opponent isn't even allowed to use Sorin Markov's minus three to reset you.

Pulled this at the prerelease, and played her in a W/B deck. Went 3-1 (2-0 until the final match), and lost to a hyper-aggressive R/G deck in the final round. This card is insane, and cropped up in at least 4 of my six matches. Definitely not to be underestimated. 5/5

Okay this thing just won me a pre-release tourney. But I am confident it is going to drop in price, I mean baneslayer was a much better card (imo) and is now under 10. It is somewhat build around, and has no immediate board impact unless you have other cards out. One board sweep and your plans are spoiled. So I sold it right away.

If she had double strike, she'd be stupidly broken.
She is a white card, but she loves extort.
She is the most interesting angel in M14.

Use the Boros Charm - Boros Reckoner life gain trick possibly ? It would make monsters out of a token deck with a few Legion Loyalists if you can keep them on the field long enough "trample and first strike" !! I still give the card 5 stars.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
I hope she goes down in price sometime during her existence, and think she will post-Standard :)

She's not very broken- she's surprisingly more Johnny-friendly than Timmy-friendly. This is an Angel I can without apologies put into Kaalia of the Vast and expect fun for the whole table because of how ridiculously answerable she is. (EDH is BUILT to answer the kind of thing that she is.) Kind of unusual for a Kaalia deck to be 'fun for the whole table'.

I like it. :)

@raptorman333

Kitchen Finks doesn't work. +1 counters and -1 counters don't remove each other. They're both on the target, so Kitchen Finks would not keep 'persisting.'

Although, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: @rollinsclone

Thank you for correcting me. I'm beginning to realize that my friend isn't as well versed in the Comprehensive Rules as he thought. Sigh, he's normally so reliable about rules and such though...

This is the mythic that is most deserving of its mythic status. 5 mana for a 3/4 flier is not bad. Lifelink makes it much better. Lifelink and evasion on one card is always a beautiful thing. Pumping other creatures when you gain life puts this over the top, especially with the white lifegain focus in this set. And it's not legendary, so you could presumably have 4 on the field.
Kurraga
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This is going to be fun when she becomes worth less than $10 or so like she should be. She's pretty good but a very niche card. Seems fun with extort. Also it's infinite with Boros Reckoner if you give it lifelink and ping it (exactly one damage). Dumb with extort, too.

A very well designed mythic. She is not overpowered upon hitting the table and at least requires other cards to do her combo magic. She also feels appropriately costed too. Possibly a little over the top; maybe it should have read "Whenever you gain two or more life...", but this is a heck of a lot more balanced than Baneslayer. I think Wizards did some good work here.

I like to combine this gal with seraph sanctuary, soulmender, elixir of immortality, syndic of tithes, path of bravery, chalice of life, and rhox faithmender.
My favorite duel so far was against someone playing a deck that had fog banks and other creatures with defender. The fog banks kept him alive long enough to see me get four creatures that were 30/30 and my life total well over 200 points. That wasn't enough, I happened to have one Ajani, caller of the pride in my deck and was able to resolve his ultimate while healer of the pride was on the field (okay, I made this last part up but it would have been glorious if it were true!).

P.S. I know Rhox doesn't cause the angel to trigger twice but hell, with all the lifegain in my deck, he makes for a fun time.

I have a monowhite lifegain deck that has gone over a few small changes over the years - initially it had Cradle of Vitality in it, but I swapped that out for Well of Lost Dreams for some potent card advantage. With M14 I've swapped out the Baneslayer Angels for these, which is almost combining both the evasive wincon of the Baneslayer and the previous wincon of the Cradle into one neat little package.

In particular, it pumps up my Walls of Reverence as well as herself, so if/when she ends up dying I still gain big bursts of life each turn.

She's not overpowered, she's kind of like Trostani or Blood Baron. If you're aggro, she's pretty overpowered against you. If you're control, she poses almost no threat. (but Voice of Resurgence gives you nightmares.)

Regardless of what impact this will have on constructed, she will remain at a good price for a very long time.

- She's an angel. Casual players love angels.
- She interacts well with lifegain. Casual players love lifegain.
- She isn't super broken unlike baneslayer, which caused a whiplash against the casual community for how expensive it got (baneslayer broke $50 at its peak) and how pushed its power was.

The casual crowd will lap this card up, just like how the casual crowd has caused bad cards like glimpse the unthinkable to reach unthinkable monetary prices.

scavenging ooze at the moment is really the only card that "breaks" this, because the lifegain is in tiny chunks and each one will trigger archangel (whereas something like thragtusk would only trigger once). It still feels too slow otherwise.

This card is way too good for monowhite lifegain decks, and pairs perfectly with her Fiendslayer Paladin buddy. Definitely a huge threat that needs to be dealt with, and even getting 2-4 counters out before she dies is enough to cause a lot of pressure. Definitely one of my favorite cards in this set.

★☆☆☆☆ (1.8/5.0) (2 votes)
I want this so bad if only for the synergy it makes with Herald of War and Seraph Sanctuary.

DAMN YOU INFLATED STANDARD PRICES!

That said R&D kindly remembered the upset that Baneslayer caused to the community in terms of power creep.

Serra Angel can get in a scrap with Archangel of Thune and not only live but beat her. While at the same time, a carefully played Archangel of Thune can get in a scrap with Baneslayer Angel and win! A delicious balance!

If this goes down to only 10 dollars when it rotates out I will flip tables. It's a five dollar mythic at best. Any card that has a build around mechanic should not be this expensive. Limited bomb or no.

A 3/4 Archangel of Thune will lose to a 4/4 Serra Angel if no life is gained before. a 5/5 Baneslayer Angel will lose to a 5/6 (or larger) Archangel of Thune if played carefully and life was gained. Maybe read the card before calling someone else stupid? A thought.

Archangel of Thune is a fantastic card. Whenever you gain life you put a +1/1 counter on all your creatures. I played it in an extort deck and it's a beast. It also works well with Angelic Accord and Soulmender. Also pair it with Angelic Skirmisher for a great combination. A truly under rated card.

As soon as this card was spoiled I ordered 4 for my Soul Sisters casual deck, if I were to have 2-3 soul warden/attendants in play and I were to drop an Archangel of thune essentially AoT would enter the battlefield gaining you 3 life but granting 3 +1/+1 counters to your army. and having that effect continue for every creature played after the fact makes you an impossible force to race.

One card that cracks this combo wide open without going infinite(-ly lame)? Storm Herd. If you had say 1 AoT and 1 Soul Warden and 20 life (Yeah right, LIFEGAIN!) you would receive 20 21/21 flying pegasus tokens and doubling your life. storm herd being 10 mana essentially would divide the cost as 5 mana for a Beacon of Immortality, and 5 mana for 20 21/21 flying tokens. And that's this combo at it's most tame.

@KasaiAisu,
no. 1: I didn't use the word stupid, you did, sir.

no. 2: I was only commenting on the fact that SerGarlan mentioned a situation that is basicly "If I play AoT and do absolutely nothing and still decide to block a crappy card, it will die. If I play AoT and boost it a couple of times, I can block a card better than the crappy one and it will kill it. Hence, AoT is balanced"...this is obviously a falacy, mr. smart ass (look it up), it's like saying AoT is balanced because it dies to craw wurm if unboosted but kills akroma if I play a primal growth on it or whatever

no. 3: On the actual card, anyone who says this is balanced is insane. It is to lifegain decks what last year's sublime archangel is to exalted decks (maybe not as good). I don't mind a new archangel tradition on core sets at all, just saying this is a super card

no. 4: I've read the card more than enough times, thank you for your interest

Expect to see this card in Standard a lot more in the near future. Born of the Gods is pushing token generation even more, and White Weenie is a strong top-8 contender already. Hopeful Eidolon (1/1 Lifelink for W, Bestow of 3W) is amazing synergy with the archangel. You also have the new Oreskos Sun Guide which will net you 2 Life when it untaps.

"Any card that has a build around mechanic should not be this expensive." I don't think she honestly requires much building around to be good by herself. Well costed, easily playable, excellent abilities. Just go ahead and equip her with her namesake's ring, Ring of Thune, or Lightning Greaves.
In my GW lifegain/elves I have pulled off this quite a bit:

T1: forest. Suspend Search for Tomorrow
T2: plains, greaves. (elves with haste are nasty, trust me if you haven't seen for yourself.)
T3: forest/plains, Somberwald Sage, equip with greaves, tap to play Essence Warden then Fyndhorn Elves/Llanowar Elves (all 3 if you get an ungodly good draw). if you do have both elves, a T3 tablet of the guilds is always nice, just amp's archangel's boosts even more.
T4: forest/plains, search's suspend ends so grab your choice. tap Sage, elves and a land for Archangel of Thune, 4 mana left. Archangel resolves, warden triggers, all get +1/+1. here go with Greenweaver Druid (another +1/+1 to all), equip with greaves then play Path of Bravery, switch greaves to archangel and attack with her and warden. you will hit with 12 for just those two.
archangel & warden before attack: permanent 5/6 and 3/3 with another +1/+1 boost each from bravery, attacking with both nets you two life and another +1/+1 to all, making the archangel a 7/8 and the warden a 5/5. archangel hits, you get 7 life and another +1/+1 to all.
T5: Odric, Master Tactician is really all you need now. Faith's Reward in hand is nice in response to a possible board wipe by opponent, but now with odric and the greaves you will be hitting for an unblockable 46 damage. I'm sure someone will find a better card to replace one I chose or a better strategy altogether, but my decks are only as good as the cards I have and that's one of the best possible wins with my GW. Say you did get both elves on T3 as well as the tablet, you would be hitting for quite a bit more. The archangel does NOT require building around, but she is only all the better if you do.
