I love this guy's janky Firststrike, Deathtouch, Lifelink ability.

What happens when he's blocked by more than one creature?

Catmurderer, I think the ability triggers for each creature. I'm just not sure if I'm right though.

I heart this wurm. I'll hug it, and love it, and call it george, and equip it with Echo Circlet and EAT SOME FACE !

Whenever you talk about a big green bomb, this is that big green bomb.

The only problem is the lack of trample. Attacking into 0/1's could prove to be unprofitable (though if you're actually concerned about the counterattack the blocking is very profitable ^^).

If he's blocked by more than one creature, more than one creature goes to the graveyard. Simple. The thing I find quite interesting is that it only has GG in the casting cost meaning that it will find its way into decks that aren't necessarily primarily green.

Wizards commited to making good wurms after Pelekka. Just compare this and that other new green one that gives intimidate to everything organic within a thousand miles to the old, fat, slow and rather useless snails that once were what wurms had to offer.

This is a great fatty for any deck that can use it. I've found that it's a very funn card to use in a mana ramp. Turns 1, 2 and 3 mana acceleration. Turn 4 slagwurm. Along with wurmcoil engine, this can pit away a game, FAST!!!! Who would want to go up against it?

I've got something I want to confirm. If it were to block or be blocked by something with Indestructible, the creature would obviously not be destroyed but you would still gain life equal to its toughness right? Because the requirement for the life gain is the ability activating not the creature dying. Or am I wrong?

This ability doesn't belong in green at all. Is R&D out of ideas, or what?
@LTJZamboni:

Engulfing Slagwurm is quite unreal as it can't be taken out in combat; it just swallows up whatever's in its path. This guy will be a ma.ssive limited bomb, as the only way to deal with it is to draw the right piece of removal.

It's close, but I think this might even be better than Pelakka Wurm.

I believe that this creature still takes combat damage from opposing creatures in combat, it just destroys the creature regardless of the combat out come. unless of course it's indestructible. That's how I play it, makes it more balanced. I need an official judge to verify how it works.

Scary Limited bomb. Here's how one game went:

Opponent: Rawr Slagwurm!
Me: Oh, crap. Eat my Myr token!

I then continued to throw Myr at the beast, using Razor Hippogriff to return my Origin Spellbomb, and a Glimmerpoint Stag to flicker my Hippogriff to get the Spellbomb back, until I finally dug to my Arrest. No idea how I would have won if I hadn't been playing white.

High Ground. Why did Wizards not just give it the keywords Deathtouch, Lifelink, and First Strike? This is the single strongest argument for efficient creature removal in the game. Just as Darksteel Colossus is the single strongest argument for nondestructive removal.

What an insane card though. The only con is it can be chump blocked all day. I prefer this card over most trample wurms.

@Sironos: Because that's what Green has, powerful creatures and mana-ramp. It's like asking why Blue has the best card advantage and the best counters: because that's what Blue does. Mono-Green is by no means overpowered, and while it does have amazing creatures and ramp it has those because they're pretty much it's entire shtick. Remember, in return it loses pretty much any removal, sweepers, flying, and a whole bunch of other shiny stuff.

Use with Asceticism.

Also, anyone know what happens if this gets trample?

megakille120
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (3 votes)
@Blaze:

read on a wizards site that if this guy's ability kicks neither he, a creature he blocked or a creature blocking him deals combat damage that turn, so trample doesn't work as he don't deal combat damage
Also, if this guys ability kicks on an indestructible creature, the creature does not die, but the wurms ability still gives you life equal to the indestructible creatures toughness
nemokara
★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (2 votes)
@megakille120

Don't know where you read that, but it's wrong. Yes, ordinarily when he's blocked, the blocker is destroyed and he deals no combat damage. This is because he's still classified as "blocked", even though there's not a blocker anymore (in the same way, you can block with a creature that has a sacrifice effect, sacrifice it, and the attacking creature will still be "blocked"). However, the definition of trample is that you can still deal damage when blocked. More specifically, once lethal damage has been applied to blockers, any extra can be dealt to the defending player (or planeswalker). In this case there is no lethal damage required since the blocker was already destroyed.

As for the destroyed creature dealing damage, it gets destroyed during the 'declare blockers' step, so is gone before combat damage is dealt.

@NoobOfLore:

Yes of course it dies to Doom Blade. Unless he plays Withstand Death. But then you play a counterspell because you're running blue/black, but then he plays a second one, but then you drop Black Sun's Zenith for 7 but then...

Yes, there are ways to kill it. There literally thousands of cards in magic and not one of them is impossible to stop. Emrakul? Visara. Ulamog? Journey to Nowhere. We could play the 'but I play this game' till the end of time, but that doesn't mean this card is any less good.

I love to use Tower Above on this. You destroy any creature you choose. You deal wither damage to anything that wouldn't be destroyed originally (such as darksteel colossus, and note, you still kill it :D) and if you have any damage left over, you hit the guy on the other end!

Fantastically insane. 11 damage nigh-unblockable to the face with a one card combo is just beautiful. Further, things like rancor or other cheap trample granting abilities work wonders. He's good with just about anything, but anything that gives trample makes him twice the gooder.

★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (2 votes)
@DavenOctavio The reason they didn't give it deathtouch, lifelink, and first strike is because this ability is strictly better. For deathtouch to work, it has to deal combat damage, and the same goes for lifelink. The creature is also destroyed before first strike damage is dealt. This creature *is* green's creature removal. (Aside from the hate it gives flyers.) Despite the fact that it's vulnerable to removal, tap, or mind control, it's still a beast on the field. Anything that can block Emrakul and Kozilek at the same time and survive wins.

@megakille120 It DOES deal trample damage. When the slagwurm is blocked and the creature dies, it's still considered blocked. Just like when you block with a creature and then sacrifice it. The creature is still considered blocked, so it deals no combat damage. With trample, a creature even when considered blocked deals the excess of the combat damage to the player. Since the creature is dead, 0 damage is dealt to the creature and ALL damage is dealt to the player. Trample goes through for win.

@beerious Engulfing Slagworm's ability triggers immediately after blockers are declared. No damage is dealt either way but the blocking creature dies.

does the ability take effect before damage? if it does, lure on this guy wipes your opponent's board every turn!
CrowJonSnow
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
observer of the cards, you're slightly wrong on the damage it deals.
if you give it trample, all of its power goes through, since lethal damage for a dead creature is 0.

this card is an absolute beast and one of the top fatties in my green deck. 7 mana is nothing, especially with Palladium Myr and Harrows. he kills everything that blocks him, or that he blocks, and you gain life. he has to be killed by spot removal or board sweeps, and with trample you're pretty much guaranteed 7+ damage.
channel a Shinen of Life's Roar on him and every creaute your opponent controls dies.

chaoticfox, I'm not a judge, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it works.
It clearly says, WHEN it blocks or becomes blocked.
It happens as soon as the slagwurm is assigned to block, or something is assigned to block the slagwurm. The defending creature never gets to the deal damage step, even if it has first strike.

Anyway: Mono-green makes me angry.
Not because it's overpowered, but because you need to spend hilarious amounts of money to get the fatties that make it run.

Anyway, I'll just go ahead and recite the old adage: "Dies to doomblade!!1"
This isn't a bad card, but this is what creature removal is printed for, honestly.

I can't believe I'm the only one that noticed this... It's the ALASKAN BULL WURM! ...from spongebob...

and yeah I made a standard B/G wurm deck with him, massacre wurm, wurmcoil engine, and glissa, who acts like a mini version of it. It actually works very, very well. Heartless summoning and/or birthing pod with just wurmcoil and him works great, or just go with mana ramp.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (2 votes)
whoever made this card is stupid, someone needs to change the rules on this. Killing creatures just by assigning the blocking is stupid, it should still have to take the damadge from blocking or being blocked. otherwise this card is just way too overpowered for multiplayer casual games.

★★☆☆☆ (2.0/5.0) (2 votes)
On the turn you cast an overrun, this gets through for 10 damage if it survives. This is probably worse than Terra Stomper, which will likely add 11 points of damage to your romp, and already having trample means the terra stomper can't be chump blocked. the stomper even costs less.
However, there is a card even more exciting than overrun for this guy: Stampede
Instant speed trample to all your forces for two less mana than overrun. You can just about guarantee that this will get chump blocked, you will gain life AND you will hit them for 8. Don't cast this until after their creature is already dead. Having two mana left over means that when they cast a doom blade on this, you have mana for Vines of Vastwood.

This Wurmy craps all over the following:
-"Phantom" cards
-Vigor
-Infect
-Deathtouch
-First and Double Strike
And many many more.
Really, there shouldn't be a big ol' wurm that can go toe to toe with, say, Glissa, The Traitor. And then EAT her. First Strike and Deathtouch are supposed to kill everything...though I guess that's what Indestructible was for; not as useful in the scars block I guess.
This isn't me disliking this guy, no, Wurms are my favorite creature type and this is one of my favorite creatures.
I'm just wondering what was going through who's head when they decided "How about this: whenever something fights it, it dies. Before damage can even be dealt. Oh and you gain that much life."
Ridiculous.

One of my favorite wurms (and I love wurms). Even ignoring that ability, it's still a 7/7 for 5GreenGreen - no trample, but there's plenty of ways to grant that in-color. Then add in the ability to eat Emrakul, the Aeons Torn...

Funny thing happened to me recently with this card.
I'm playing with my Mayael the Anima EDH deck, and I draw this guy in my opening hand with a bunch of ramp and a Craterhoof Behemoth. I'm thinking fu€K this card sucks...well wouldn't you know I'm facing a Glissa, the Traitor dredge deck. So after a few turns of hiding behind chump blockers ala Conqueror's Pledge while Glissa smashes face equipped with Elephant Guide, Fists of Ironwood and a Mask of Avacyn, I have finally ramped enough to save my @$$. Help me Engulfing Slagwurm, you're my only hope. Top deck Hull's Breach turns into a win...when I stabilize and drop the Craterhoof. Yay underrated wurms!

Just think I'll clear up the two most often misunderstood facets of this card.

First, the timing of the effect:

chaoticfox and beerious: You are wrong. The effect takes place before combat damage is assigned. Check it:

510. Combat Damage Step

510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage.

510.1d A blocking creature assigns combat damage to the creatures it’s blocking. If it isn’t currently blocking any creatures (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage

Second, how his combat damage is assigned:

I have noticed some people seem to think that he destroys the creature he is blocking, and then his damage goes through. This is untrue. Unless you give him trample, the order goes like this:
1. Engulfing Slagwurm is blocked
2. Blocking creature(s) are destroyed due to Engulfing Slagwurm's effect. You gain life equal to destroyed creature(s) toughness.
3. Combat damage is assigned. The blocking creature has been destroyed, so it can't take any damage, and the Slagwurm doesn't take damage from the blocking creature, as it is now destroyed. The damage does not go through to the player unless the Slagwurm has been given trample somehow, and the blocking creature had toughness less than Engulfing Slagwurm's current power.

Just waiting for the wurm that has "If ________ Wurm attacks and is unblocked, it eats defending player. EATS THEM."
