Pelakka Wurm has the same cost and is the same rarity. It's also infinitely superior.

this card is..... well just boring. Not quite sure what wizard was thinking making this, but even comparing this lets say an Ulamog's Crusher or an Engulfing Slagwurm or a Terastodon (all costing less than 50 cents) we see that its heavily underpowered for the current standard.

The least they could've done is given this guy trample. I mean hell, look at goliath sphinx.

We have a great set of Wurms in standard. This is not one of them...

you do realize Terra Stomper is a rare right?

agreed, steez4days. with the trash they churn out, i think it's time the whole design team was fired and new people were given a chance--new people who actually wanted to work there. this card is pathetic, just like the rest of the set, and is a slap in the face to anyone who spends 4-dollars on a booster.

Apparently, Wizards is realizing that green can do a lot better than Craw Wurm (and of course, they made mythic rare Rampaging Baloths and rare Terra Stomper), but they are too shy to make the P/T higher than the cost in lower rarities because players will complain about power creep. Pelakka Wurm was a good step, but that was justified because it was Rise of the Eldrazi. Personally, I think it's already time for green to have a common 7/7 at 4GG, but this would have been fine, too. Not that Craw Wurm is useless in Limited, just saying the bar is a lot higher than what they are printing at common now.

The flavour text is cool - I wish this had an ability to go with it, like Devour or "Quilled Slagwurm may block any number of creatures".

...they're giving you people an 8/8 for 7 and you just complain? Power creep is killing us.

I don't think anyone is getting that this card is almost strictly meant for Limited play. I grabbed a couple of these while drafting, and whenever one of these hit the battlefield it stayed there until it crushed my opponent. Scars has lots of removal options for artifacts but there's less it can do about nonartifact creatures. Even against Infect heavy opponents this beast will still stand long enough to see you to victory. Think of it as the Alpha Tyrranax for Besieged, yeah it costs one green more but Besieged has slowed the game enough that it isn't that much of a problem

I don't know why everyone is complaining. This card is making me so nostalgic. :D

Guys, think. The mana cost can be a problem but when it's NOT, you just dropped an 8/8. When that happens, you feel pretty good towards the card. Just make mono-green with plenty of copper and palladium myrs, maybe a few greenweaver druids. I agree its definitely not a good card, but it's not bad. And remember: Pelakka wurm is gone in standard in a few months.

I feel like the uncommon status is justified under this colour. Regarding power creep, if he was a rare people would complain to no end about him having no abilities, however, he's just too big for common- if he was common I'd just feel bad for the big guy... I think he's at home where he is...

Plus, who couldn't fall in love with that adorable face :)

a vanilla 8/8 for 7 is powerful in limited if you can back it up. It demands blocking, virtually acting as repeatable removal. At the very least it pulls removal, saving your other creatures, at most it swings for 8 to the face.

Comparing the non-trample huge creatures to those with trample is too often reduced to: trample = better. People are less apt to block a big trampler, and they are magnets for removal. Non-tramplers are often passed up on removal in favor of chump blockers, effectively turning the creature itself into a multiple removal effect, as it kills the chumps.

Obviously in constructed cards like this are unplayable, at 7 mana a creature should be ending the game.

Eternal_Blue, it's that attitude that's killing Magic, not the designers. Just learn to appreciate the good cards, and the formats they're built for.

Jeez, you sound like a whimpering twelve year-old. Go back to Yu-Gi-Oh if that's how you're going to treat the game.

This is fine for an uncommon. Although pretty fun, I thought Pelakka Wurm was a bit much for an uncommon, this seems a bit more logical.

I'm sorry, but I gotta jump on the "this card sucks" bandwagon. Most cards that people argue are "good in limited/drafts" just end up being crappy fodder cards that waste ink sitting in a commons donation box, not even worth the ten cents you'd blow on it. It looks like it has a porcupine for a mouth, and what good is an 8/8 anyway? For that mana cost, I don't want a crappy creature that dies to any negative spell pointed at it's face while struggling to break through a wall of even 0/1 tokens. Yeah, keep in mind that without trample, Awakening Zone keeps this guy completely and utterly useless. Give the poor guy reach at least! powercreep is one thing, but for pete's sake, you need to consider both mana cost and mana investment in addition to power; for that same amount of mana and the effort you'd spend getting it out reasonably, you can get MUCH more than a vanilla 8/8.

I mean, to be fair, he MIGHT be okay if you were playing with Murgadurka Petroglyphs.

Vorniclex: "Hey guys, I yanked the teeth out of an Engulfing Slagwurm! Wanna see?"

Jin-Gitaxias: "...you ruined a perfectly good slagwurm."

Vorinclex: "No no, see, it goes faster now. Without teeth. I also painted some cool stripes on it."

Jin-Gitaxias: "How is it supposed to eat?"

Vorinclex: "Norn let me borrow her giant blender. I feed it Viridian Emissary smoothies."

Jin-Gitaxias: "That's the dumbest and most disgusting thing I've ever heard."

Vorinclex: ...*pokes Jin-Gitaxias in eye and runs*

Jin-Gitaxias: "GAAAHHH! I'll get you in ten turns, Vorinclex! You hear me? TEN TUUURNNNS!"

Ok, flavor text writers, we get it already. First there was Megatog, then Engulfing Slagwurm. Now I'm wondering if there are any creatures on Mirrodin that do use their teeth.

However much 1 power and toughness gets you, I's still rather Pelakka Wurm.

1) It is uncommon because of its size.
2) It is not intended to be a match-closer card.
3) It is big.
4) Its mana cost is less than its power/toughness average.
OK, it's green-intensive; that must be said... But dammit, while reading some comments it seems like now every card which costs more than 5 should be an immediate game-winner! Magic is a game of fun and strategy, and there are cards made for both these things. Were the power level of all the cards pretty the same, the game would be a lot boring.
I don't like Mirrodin Besieged, I don't like the Scars of Mirrodin block in general, but IMHO this card is an example of GOOD DESIGN.

Final note: VANILLA 4EVER!

Funny how hexproof makes an 8/8 a 7 go from a 2 star to a 4.5 star creature :/ This thing has a better P/T than its CMC. This guy is no Pelakka Wurm or Wurmcoil Engine, but come on. 3 stars wouldn't be that unreasonable...even though it should have trample.

Rather efficient at 8/8 for 7 with no drawback.

{sigh} Vorinclex...With or without teeth, why would it move on to a new kill IF IT WASN'T ACTUALLY HUNGRY? And a big enough meal should keep it satisfied for some time. What did you do, accelerate its metabolism ninefold?!

Venser was right about the Phyrexians (especially the ones freshly minted by the transfiguring oil?) not understanding nature at all. Vorinclex certainly doesn't understand what the point of eating is.

Undercosted but at 7 mana, you should be changing the game with every drop. It's past time for vanilla creatures- it's time for something that breaks the stalemate.

This doesn't do that, so it's really not worth playing unless you don't have access to anything better. And I hope you do, because expecting this to do much is not a good plan.
Moxxy

Biggest vanilla creature in MTG.

Well technically it's tied with fusion elemental but its mana cost cost is a gimmick in itself.

Strictly worse than a lot of cards near its CMC with effects, but this guy doesn't need effects in limited. Think I'm going to give it a 5/5 just to make its rating closer to where it should be (3, maybe 3.5)
