You can't really get it out any sooner than turn 3 or 4 (not any better than Terra Stomper), but it would be nice to drop one later in the game and still have plenty of mana open.

T1: Forest, Joruga Treespeaker.
T2: Forest, Level up Treespeaker, 2x Arbor Elf.
T3: Say hello to your opponent's worst nightmare!

This card is ridiculous! Green ramp decks are already insanely good (I run one right now, so I would know), and now WotC makes THIS!

So what if it can't come out any earlier than Terra Stomper! You'll still have mana available with this card, while the Terra Stomper will leave 1 mana open, if you pull 4 Llanowar Elves. This guy leaves 5 open with 4 mana elves!

You can already get a T3 Terra Stomper, which I would much rather run in ramp.

This card is really only good with Primaclux. I really want to like it, but green just has better fat.

T3 forest, Khalni Hydra

Nobody has mentioned what I think when I read this card: "how is this thematically a hydra?" Other hydras have some kind of growth mechanic or something related to a hydra growing new heads. This thing does not have any reference to multiple heads or to growing more powerful.

It could have been a beast or an elemental, but I still wouldn't be excited by it due to its ridiculous similarity to Terra Stomper. Khalni Hydra is clearly good, but no kind of ingenuity whatsoever went into designing this card.

This card is so amazing. In my monogreen mana accel deck, i consistently get 8 creatures by turn 4, nearly every game, through the use of Howl of the Nightpack and then one Llanowar Elves or Arbor Elf. That means this bro would be free turn 4. What a professional.

Alright. Here is why Terra Stomper is better.

Turn 1: Play the L Elf.
Turn 2: Tap 2 lands plus the L Elf for 1 mana...total 3 mana...lay down greenweaver druid.
Turn 3: Tap 3 land, plus the L Elf and Druid for a total of 6 mana.

2 Choices....
Cast Terra Stomper (8/8 trample) that can't be countered...or
Cast this guy (8/8 trample) that could be countered.

Here's the deal. These guys cost 6 bucks a piece. Terra Stompers are 2 bucks for a set of 4 and are a better card.

★★★★☆ (4.3/5.0) (10 votes)
You know about that Terra Stomper vs. Khalni Hydra debate going around? Well, why not just run both of them since they're so easy to cast?
And Terra Stomper has fat rolls, so he loses.

{3}{G}{G}{G}Terra Stomper vs. {G}{G}{G}{G}{G}{G}{G}{G}Khalni Hydra? (ignoring the prices of both)

Well first of all, the stomper dino dude can be played outside monogreen (at least more than when compared to the hydra). Get the stomper if you're playing a deck that doesnt have 4 Primalcruxes in them. If you're like me who's rolling with 4 Cruxes, then quite obviously, i'll pick the hydra. The synergy between Crux and Hydra is too awesome to p@ss up. And i also think of it this way: although Khalni Hydra can most certainly be countered, Terra Stomper will NEVER be 0 to cast. i'll just make up for the counterability with something like Autumn's Veil since i would most certainly have the mana to spare more often than not.

My Eldrazi Green deck goes nomnomnomnomnomnomnomnom.

Terra Stomper has nothing on this. Not only does this beast have a T3 drop, but in the case you draw him late game, he'll be insanely cheap (may even become a 0 cost!). You draw Terra Stomper... aw crap, still have to pay the 6.

Edit: And who in their right mind plays Greenweaver Druid and not 8 much cheaper costing and curve-friendly Llanowar Elves (including Arbor Elf)? Yeah... I thought so. Your comment is null, Robert_G.

To be fair to Terra Stomper, it's sideboard-able for WU control maybe.

Green fatties have kinda been in a downturn since the end of the onslaught block. Its nice to have good fatties again, especially since the quality are exploding. This guy can almost become a green deck staple. With the rate green can spit out creatures, he's good draw at almost all turns.
Ragamander
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (2 votes)
Hey guys, we all know that the CORRECT turn progression for playing this guy is:
T1: Forest, Black Lotus, Mox Emerald, remove three Elvish Spirit Guides from your hand, KHALNI HYDRA. :D

But, for those of us who DON'T have those cards (and/or are trying this in Type-II), this seems most likely to me:
T1: Forest, Arbor Elf/Llanowar Elves
T2: Forest, Elvish Archdruid/Mul Daya Channelers/Joraga Treespeaker+level it up once
T3: Forest, Khalni Hydra/Terra Stomper

A T3 8/8 trampler seems very easy in mono-green right now. Not to mention we now have a THIRD 8/8 trampler at our disposal, Ezuri's Brigade, although playing that requires a bit more thought in terms of deck construction.

Hmm...

Turn 1: Forest, Joraga Treespeaker
Turn 2: Forest, tap 2 Forests to level up Joraga Treespeaker to level 1, tap for (F)(F) for two Llanowar Elves
Turn 3: Forest, tap 3 Forests, both Llanowar Elves and the Joraga Treespeaker for 7 (F) to summon Wolfbriar Elemental kicked three times for three 2/2 wolves, seven creatures on the field
Turn 4: Forest, pay 1 (F) for Khalni Hydra, tap 3 Forests and Joraga Treespeaker to cast Overwhelming Stampede, all creatures get +8/+8 and Trample, swing for 60 damage, GG

Fun stuff, definitely. Requires specific draws, but if you run multiples of everything, not that difficult to pull off. Throw in stuff like Might of the Masses for even more craziness.

You do realize that in your example, you would have 3 creatures that are green, 3 mana, and 1 colorless creature that sacs for a colorless mana. So you could get 6 out of 8 for his cost.

Elf decks have a great big friend in this fella. I also like to use him to follow up a huge casting of Wolfbriar Elemental. "Ok, so I threw down a 4/4, and 7 2/2 wolves for each time I kicked it. And oh, what the hell, here have an 8/8 trampler too."

Staredowns:
8 for an 8/8 Trample: Good
7 for an 8/8 Trample: Awesome
6 for an 8/8 Trample: Ooh, getting a bit Power Creepy here. Well, still no Terra Stomper.
5 for an 8/8 Trample: Whoa. Sh*t just got real.
4 for an 8/8 Trample: Must...get rid of it!
3 for an 8/8 Trample: 0_0
2 for an 8/8 Trample: v.v
1 for an 8/8 Trample: I concede the game.
0 for an 8/8 Trample: I quit Magic.

On a fun combo-note: Primalcrux and Avenger of Zendikar both have love affairs with this card.

Most people are comparing this to Terra Stomper. And coming from someone who has used Terra Stomper quite a bit, I would prefer this guy. Yes, Terra Stomper can't be countered, which makes him invaluable against some decks. But this guy is much easier to play multiples of because he's often much cheaper to cast, which against most decks is more important than being uncounterable. That being said, if you have the room there aren't any reasons not to play both.

Wow! 8 pages of comments and not one single "dies to X" post!!!!

Allow me to be the first! >:)

What? This big ass thing just dies to Doom Blade as soon as it's out! |Massive Trollface|

All your crazy turn 3 Khalni Hydra combos will result in *MY* TURN 3 OBLIVION RING!!!! Followed up by a wave of attacking soldiers and/or allies. Fat load of good your mana elves are gonna do there XD (Sorry I'm a Spike by nature)

Anyway, this card is green to the max. Fat, green trampler that can get out for cheap, even for free! If you're going to run a mana accel deck like that there will surely be more fatties to come. I've constructed a Timmy style mana accel huge-green-creature deck consisting of Leatherback Baloths, Primalcruxes and Khalni Hydras. I've found that in experience my opponents (or myself if I'm playing against it) typically run out of Doom Blades, Murders, Terminates, Path to Exiles, (Insert random removal card here) ect ect ect... removing all my fatties. Eventually one stays on the board. Can't remove them all. One can win the game by himself in 3 turns. I've actually found that in such decks, hitting the utility creatures actually does more damage. Save a Vines of Vastwood or a Canopy Cover to keep your fatty alive. Then kill. Now that green has so much removal, namely Beast Within and (oh god I'm gonna be sick) Dismember (pukes), green players can handle opposing menaces of their own, namely those blasted Phyrexian Obliterators.

5/5 for one of the best green creatures available

I have a better way to get this out on turn 3 and only requiring 2 cards to get this Hydra out.
Turn 1: Forest, Joraga Treespeaker
Turn 2: Forest, Level up Joraga, tap him to get 2 mana and play Fists of Ironwood.
Turn 3: Forest. Tap 3 forests, tap Joraga for 2 mana. That's 5 mana, you have 3 green creatures, which makes the hydra cost 3 less and play it for 5.

I love the guy saying oh it dies to doomblade, and Oblivion ring. Yeah and? Most creatures die to doomblade, and are exiled by oblivion ring. That doesn't make them bad it just means that like 99 percent of creatures they are vulnerable to common types of creature removal. And with the right deck you can play this for free. Oh look you paid two mana to counter a card I played for free. Good job, I bet you feel great. Now I can play another one, also for free. One of the strengths of green is the strong creatures, in a fast enough green deck losing one creature like this won't even matter.
