But the cruel art work depicts a human's mind being torn to pieces, why then does the instant remove cards from the opponent's graveyard and not their hand?

Because your memory is stored in your mind?

While you could call it removing the memory of a cast spell, on the other hand, a spell is usually considered to be memorized. Still, it's a mediocre anti-dredge spell, and everything's better with transmute.

I would argue that this is one of the best Transmute cards, as the non-transmute aspect is actually playable.
If nothing else, there's a whole helluva lot of good 2cmc spells, and the art is amazing.
I don't understand the low rating. I think this is a good sideboard card against reanimator and similar decks.

I think this might be good to run with Exhume - it can tutor for Exhume with the transmute ability, or assist Exhume by reducing its drawbacks.

I don't understand the low rating. This is a fine tutor to find cards like Necropotence, Megrim, Underworld Dreams etc. For 3 mana, if you know your deck is build around a couple of cards that costs exactly 3 CC.

@Dragejaegeren - If you know your deck is built around a couple cards that cost exactly 3 CC, you'd go with something like Drift of Phantasms that could actually tutor for them. ;)
Now, if your deck has a bunch of 2 CMC cards on the other hand...

Really good card. I don't like running most graveyard hate in EDH because they're dead cards against some decks. With this card, you can swap it for something good if you don't need to exile a graveyard.

As others have said this is an incredibly under rated card for its tutor ability with very powerful 2cc cards as well as the totally viable card itself. Great art is just icing on the cake.

I think this is suffering from cycling's reputation. I know a few people that won't even look at a card if it has a cycling ability. One of them flips out when I put the cycling land in my EDH decks. I like it throwing out cards that won't help my current situation in the game but his come back is "then put better cards in the deck" which is kind of short sighted because a land is a land, cycling or not. If I take them out, I draw less of them (usually early game when I need them.)
So anyways, this is so much better than that. How many two drops in black alone could save you turn 5? Shrivel and Marsh Casualties can save you from an Overrun of tokens next turn. A hard to kill fatty can get Cruel Edict'ed not to mention the 47 other "destroy" spells in black at that cost. Should you need a combo piece or some other win card, that costs other than two, you can always pull out Demonic Tutor.
That isn't even mentioning the card's effect, should you need to stop a few annoying re-animators instead. Or other cards in other colors, like popping out a counterspell to make your opponent sweat about which spells to play next turn or some beefy 2 cost green blocker.
So I guess my point is that this card is pretty damn good at getting you that answer you need, NOW. Costly? Sure, but aren't all choices in Magic more expensive than not having options?
I was looking for a Modern answer to tutor for my Heartless Summoning deck... well, I kind of found it.
Either I'm looking for Summoning, or one of my few 2-cost creatures (Perilous Myr or Myr Superion).
And if, for some reason, that I'm playing against Dredge, Storm (with Past in Flames) or against Tarmogoyf.

And for EDH, this can tutor for Demonic Tutor, making it a more flexible 5 mana tutor in a pinch.

I'm considering this for my Karador EDH deck. So far, the only graveyard hate I have is Bojuka Bog. While that's all great, it's limited to sorcery speed. While this doesn't get rid of the whole graveyard, it does let you get rid of another reanimator deck's best four targets, which could make a difference.
But when you're not facing a reanimator deck, this card still has value because of Transmute. My deck can tutor ten cards with this card so far, and I can always add more. You can make it a flexible five mana tutor that thins your deck by two by transmuting for Demonic Tutor or Diabolic Intent (which is more along the style of my deck). You can tutor for any creature with Eladamri's Call or Altar of Bone. You can grab Blood Artist, Qasali Pridemage, or Saffi Eriksdotter. Heck, you can, if you want, tutor for a creature tutor, then fetch Dimir House Guard to tutor for a four-drop, thinning your deck by three and getting a creature to the grave.
If only this were a creature with flash and this ability. Then I would no doubt run it.
