scornful egotist is mostly used with cards that value high converted mana cost like goblin machinist, erratic explosion, torrent of fire and so on. there is a deck in scourge called pulverize that specifically plays this way, its kinda slow & vulnerable deck but it can turn ur opponent to dust very quickly if u draw the right cards.

This card could have been good but with how top heavy he is, he has been reduced to a accessory to a combo card. He is in the top 20 on my useless list, which has Wood Elemental as #1.
It's okay guys! Don't panic! It may LOOK like a 1/1 for 8, but it is in fact a 2/2 for 3, OR a 1/1 for 4. Abuse of its outrageous cost aside, and the reasonable tactic of trying to make your opponent die laughing if you hard-summon it after making a big deal over tapping 8 lands, I get the odd feeling this was a test run of the concept of a card that's cheaper if you Morph it than if you Summon it... And the only thing they dared give it was an incredibly huge cost as a 'benefit'. And the comboers made it godly anyway.

The flavor text says "Once I was human". As in, he's not human any more. So he shouldn't have the human creature type. I say his race type should be Ooze. He looks like he's a creature of living slime.

I think this card is funny. It's also much useful than it looks. It can combo well with things like affinity, convoke and other abilities that let you play cards for much less then their converted mana cost, and then play cards that's power is based on converted mana cost. It's not a gamebreaker, but it's very combo-worthy.
Also, I find it funny that his flavor text says, "I used to be human," while his official creature type is "human."

Okayyyyyyyyy...normally I can see some kind of justification for making something like so expensive...like, for example, Wurmskin Forger cranks out a couple of +1/+1 counters, and Gigantomancer makes things large for cheap. But there is no justification, none whatsoever, for giving this guy such a colossally high cost. I mean yeah, you can morph him, but...seriously, eight mana? What about him merits eight mana? Combo card or not, I don't think I'm a fan.

Man most people here dont know anything, he was made as a combo piece, which many people have pointed out, although it is incredibly obvious, although they shoould have made his CMC 20 just to make it more obvious to slower people...
I give him 5/5 he does exactly what he is meant to do, and he is exactly what he is meant to be (except human)

Well, if you tap 8 lands and act like the situation is really ominous for your opponent, and hardcast him, he combos really well with Laughing Hyena.
Try this: Hardcast him, your opponent is guaranteed to let him be if you 're not playing a combo deck (and if he actually does waste a kill spell on him, you have the advantage) and next turn, cast and equip him with Hedron Matrix.

I think you're not exactly getting the point. This guy is an Egotist. Therefore you can't exactly trust his claims. An egotist is a boastful person, so you can't really believe his word, or indeed his flavor text. He believes himself to have risen above the level of a human, but in the end he's still a rather weak, and definitely human wizard.
After all, this incerdible overbeing still gets slaughtered by 2 Little Girls.

By the way, thius guy is at home in every blue deck. If you've got the combos to go with him, great. Of not, he still makes great killspell bait. Any player worth his sauce, upon seeing this thing, will figure that's crazy combos waiting to happen and will try to remove him.

I just finished my Birthing Pod/Scornful Egotist deck. It's hilarious to play with, especially when I alw-ALL HAIL THE GREAT LORD EGOTIST!- ft, so that gets plenty of laughs.
He's not good, but he's fun to play with and people will never hate you for comboing with him. The creature type could use an update, though (Remove Wizard so that his flavor text is even more ir- ALL HAIL THE GREAT EGOTIST!

OK i had to create a account on this website because people are ***ing me off bitching about how this 1/1 cost 8 mana but has a morph cost of 1 i dont know if it is because these people are new to magic. or only know of the stupidly easy lorwyn/shadowmoor sets but magic has always created these cards that seem usless but have incredible potential. this card can be used in so many great ways the primary being combining it with torrent of fire and Dispersal Shield for a great burn/counter combo. with a good hand on turn 5 you can burn your enemy for 8 dmg. before you complain about how the card is uselss and over cost and stupid just take a look at the cards in and around its set chances are there are cards to combo. work with. and amplfy the card your laughing at. I could not understand this card when I first started playing MTG, I actually fed one to my Chinchilla as a symbol of my disgust but eventually I understood it. He has a CMC of eight but costs four to put on the table, there are so many things you can do with that, Energy Tap for eight mana, Juxtapose to exchange him for your opponents best creature.
And thats just my favourite two off the top of my head. The people who continue to hate this card need to develop an imagination and start thinking outside the box.

Most of the people commenting here don't seem to remember what set he's in. The set of Scourge had FIFTEEN cards that cared about having a high converted mana cost. Rush of Knowledge was probably the most potent, but Torrent of Fire (Damage equal to highest CMC of creatures you control) and Ancient Ooze (X/X creatue where X is the total CMC of other creatures you control) were perfectly good as well in limited.
I mean, no, he was never a gamebreaker, but sometimes he just did crazy things, especially with Rush of Knowledge.

Seriously, this is one of the most creative ideas I've seen out of a common.. Love this card! If you don't get how this card combos, may I suggest Checkers for you. Checkers has a neato combo; if you get yer little Checker guy alllll the way across the board, you get to take a Checker from your graveyard an equip it to him. He's twice a big now and can go backwards. Ooooo.

But well, on the other hand it has morph and a cheap face-up cost, which makes this a decent Johnny card.

This card has almost exactly a three, which I take to mean that everybody gives it either a 5 or a 1.

I think you're not exactly getting the point. This guy is an Egotist. Therefore you can't exactly trust his claims. An egotist is a boastful person, so you can't really believe his word, or indeed his flavor text. He believes himself to have risen above the level of a human, but in the end he's still a rather weak, and definitely human wizard.
After all, this incerdible overbeing still gets slaughtered by 2 Little Girls.

Seriously, this is one of the most creative ideas I've seen out of a common.. Love this card! If you don't get how this card combos, may I suggest Checkers for you. Checkers has a neato combo; if you get yer little Checker guy alllll the way across the board, you get to take a Checker from your graveyard an equip it to him. He's twice a big now and can go backwards. Ooooo.
