Makes for an interesting mana war between two red decks.

Cynical as it sounds, but this is probably near the only reason most people are buying this deck. It's a good one, though; Chain Lightning is a great card. This new one also looks amazing.

I must note right now, though, that every time I see "copy this spell and may choose (a) new target(s) for that copy" notation in rules texts for copies, I want to vomit. Shouldn't this be the default rule? How many copying spells don't allow you to choose new targets? I can't even think of one.

Jesus christ on a crutch MasterOfEtherium, you're usually just annoying, not going full retard

I would really hate to sit in on a magic game you're a member of, because if you're getting away with stuff like that, good god

Sometimes I wonder if MasterofEtherium is genuinely as stupid as he looks, or if he's simply one of the greatest trolls in the entire Magic community...

MasterOfEtherium: Rarely if ever will your opponent be throwing this back at you. If it happens that your opponent has available mana to burn you back chances are extremely likely, seeing as you get first volley, that you do too. Otherwise you're just not paying attention.. This card is not played because of this weird ability trigger that will pretty much never happen anyway.. but because it is a sorcery speed Lightning Bolt for R. This is the best burn spell for R -after- Lightning Bolt. This card is played for redundancy - just because you can. You might as well be playing 8 Lightning Bolts with these in a burn deck. In the same way that Blood Moon and Magus Of The Moon will be played together if only for redundancy.

i admit i got this confused with a lightning bolt when i first played with the new deck..ha. love this new art though. also 5/5, wont be bounced back most of the time as sorceries should be played at the right time anyways.

For purposes other than targeting yourself or your own creatures and powering shenanigans, this card seems strictly worse than Lightning Bolt.

It's at sorcery speed, and it can potentially give your opponent a critical advantage.

Don't get me wrong, lightning bolt is hard to compete with, but this seems like a poor substitute. They should really be more subtle about letting you sneak four more copies of lightning bolt into your decks.

Come on. For some of us who may for whatever reason be bored, MasterOfEtherium's all caps first letters of each word of each post is charmingly infantile and somewhat childishly entertaining. And that's about all the positive things that can be said about him. Also I just realized I may have actually played against him this past week. . . Next time we have a burn war, there's gonna be some 'splaining to do Lucy.

Anyway, I finally understand that this shouldn't be played unless you have some more mana open so you can chain things if your opponent is ready and willing to chain your crap.

For the longest time I was a real fool and then it finally hit me that this card actually is really good. The Stuffy Doll combo simply illustrates the fact you can target yourself and your own creatures. You can still run this and blast a 1/1 goblin token while running off a couple Seething Songs to nail your opponent for lots of damage. I'm sorry for ever having doubted this card. 5/5

Awesome card, one thing that upset me though, only 1 in the Premium Deck? Like shops really needed another version of this card that they could price gouge us on.

I wish I had it. I'm making a pure one-drop deck.

Heathen as it may sound, I'm not really a fan of Chain Lightning. I can see the advantages of having (more or less) 8 Bolts in your red deck, but if things get to that, I think I'd just run 4 Lava Spikes instead. At least they're not nearly as expensive to pick up as these things.

I would like to point out that Mogg Maniac is cheaper for a red burn deck and has same ability as the new Spitemare and I prefer it myself. Although the Chain Lightning has the potential to be used as a combo with maniac or spitemare or stuffy, it still seems way overpriced. As a redundant lightning bolt? ehh.. maybe, but is it really worth what they're charging?

I love this card, there are disadvantages but like everyone says, why wouldn't you want eight lightning bolts in you're deck! And they are really expensive, I wouldn't use them if it wasn't for the fact that today I was digging through the ten cent each bargain bin and found two chain lightnings from legends, a ball lightning from the dark, a wheel of fortune revised, and 12 lightning bolts from revised. Score!

@Detonativity: You have a point, in the sense that "and may choose (a) new target(s) for the copy" makes the card wordy, but it can't be a default rule. When you copy a spell, you copy everything about it, including choices that were made when it was cast. It's because you 're not casting the copy that this line of text has to be there.

@SuicidalTendancies: Actually, I'd really like to play against MasterOfEtherium, just to learn how can I speak in capitalized words :-)

Remember, except for the indestructible Stuffy Doll, you can hit your Spitemare or Mogg Maniac only once, and that the player who has the choice to pay and copy it can do so only once. You can't just hit your Spitemare (or Mogg Maniac) and pay {R}{R} {R}{R} {R}{R} to deal12 damage.

@FiveColorFinder: Consider Forgotten Cave as well.

This new art's fantastic, and whoever made the decision to reprint this as a common is a god among men -- but whoever said "common or no we're only putting in one per set" gets ten thousand thumbs down. :P

Too bad there isn't a non-foil version available; I'd love to just have a basic set of these with the new "you get to see your chain lightning actually zapping something" art.

I agree with Grimjaws and other people who aren't raving about this card. Its way too expensive to run a set of these and lightning bolt, just so you can have 8 bolts? You might as well just use a spike, as already pointed out.

I have one only because of the premium deck and I must say it looks awesome, but honestly I would never buy this card for 10 bucks. My deck is not built to target my own creatures so without that this card is simply a sorcery speed bolt to me...

And Minus_prime, no one runs dispel, or any other countering spell that limits what you can counter from what I've seen because its too specific. It's all about counterspell, mana leak, hell, even cancel for those budget players.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@limbrooke, you can't do that. You can copy it only once each time, so if you copy it again you'd have to choose to target another of your creatures or yourself, or your opponent. You can shoot your self/guys as many times as you have mana, but you only get to shoot your opponent once.

Stuffy Doll works because it puts the damage from the original and copies onto the opponent. You never change targets.

If you can find a way to make additional copies of a spell with no extra cost, such as Pyromancer Ascension and friends, it might be interesting to point one copy at yourself so that you can keep copying it more and more.

A wonderful reprint. I am very happy to see this card in the premium deck series. The deck itself is great with many first time reprints including some quirky ones like Price of Progress.

If Lightning Bolt is strictly better, then why is this $15?
Axelle
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
It may be strictly worse than Lightning Bolt, but it's still quite efficient, even at sorcery speed and with a strange drawback that usually only matters in mirror matches. This works easily as Lightning Bolts 5 through 8.

Hey, I've only just realised that if your opponent copies this you can copy the copy, according to the ruling. That's some good psychology right there, tempting them with a free burn...

Red Decks are awesome. I think one day I shall make an almost-singleton Red Deck Wins. It won't be Legacy-Good, but it will be more than enough to take down most decks I want it to be able to take down.

There are too many fantastic Red cards over the years, and I want to play them all. To make room for Thunderbolt, Flamebreak and Jaya Ballard, some interesting card choices must be made.

Learn now the Lore of the Secret Fires!
First Learn the Four, the Staples,
Lightning Bolt is the Oldest, the Alpha Born, Aged as Mountains,
Chain Lightning, most Legendary, the Maddest, the Friendliest!

Incinerate most droll

What kind of format would you play it in? Legacy? I would assume any legacy burn deck would play this as it is just another lightning bolt. I personally play a modern burn deck and would love to maindeck another lightning bolt. Thinking about it would be silly.

Lightning Bolts 5 through 8. Definitely something to look at for any deck with even a slightly burn based strategy.

If you aren't worried about instant speed, this goes well in a red deck in conjunction with lightning bolt against a not red deck. It's essentially like having 8 lightning bolts in your deck.

Worse than Lightning Bolt but not strictly worse. Works better than Lightning in combo with Rukh Egg for example. Any time you're tempted to zap your own stuff, you want this one.

This is Lightning Bolt 5 - 8 in most {R} burn decks, a good card regardless.
