Hmmm wonder why this (currently) is rated lower than Venser.

Anyways, many people say that Koth can't protect himself, so he is bad. What people are forgetting is that Koth is a red walker. He does not need to protect himself, he just needs to dish out as much damage as possible.

Whether he's acting as a constantly recurring Vengevine, or leveling up a Kargan Dragonlord all the way in one turn, the fits like a glove into most mono red strategies.

And his ultimate pretty much wins the game. That always helps.

I hate people who think any one card that isn't obviously absurdly broken is actually broken. Take a look at the original Mirrodin. Affinity was so ridiculous everyone maindecked Oxidize and Viridian Shaman just to take down the juggernaut of the format. If any one card becomes too out of hand, the format will adapt to it in order to keep it in check.

For God's sake, you could just run Horizon Drake if you think this thing's so broken.

Quit complaining. This is by no means an unbalanced or broken card. He is certainly absurd, extremely powerful, but that only serves to fuel my desire to possess a playset of him.

If he proves to be too good, answers will not only be found in the format we're in now, but will be printed in the future. Wizards actually pays attention to what's seeing play; they'll print cards that will either make another archetype that can beat a Koth deck more powerful, or will print answers to Koth ala Great Sable Stag for Fae or Obstinate Baloth for Jund.

But ever since I saw this guy, do want just keeps popping up...all the time...*drool*

Koth and Chandra were made for each other...

Can you imagine Koth's emblem with Chandra's Spitfire?

About Venser being higher-rated for being "better:"
Venser is only "better" because his abilities are a little more versatile. But you also have to remember that Venser is more expensive, takes multiple colors to play, takes longer to get his Emblem onto the field, and has abilities that make him (and, by extension, the person who played him) a major target the second he hits the field.
SorianSadaskan
★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (6 votes)
Very Straightforward abilities, especially the first one, consider you do untap an mountain, which means you can get an extra red mana in that turn, or you can use it as a 4/4 to dish out 4 damage.

Ultimately, he makes your mountains into pyromancers that can't be dealt damage by red or white/black removal. After all that been said, everyone here agrees the 'Fury' awesomeness he represent.

After reading the comcs, this guy is patient and resolute to execute his plans to destroy your opponents while Chandra on the other hand prefer to hit it head on.

Bet most of us here want to see Glissa from the next expansion, after all, she is a planeswalker. Too bad Slobad died in the last encounter.

I don't think this guy is going to be as big of a deal as everyone is making him out to be. I mean yeah he is good but not Epic. His first ability is a way to lose land. His second ability seems to shine the most to me. His last ability wont work too well if you do not have any land. There are so many things out there with deathtouch and -4-4 and doomblade. It all =s bye bye land. I think its his second ability that will be of use. Im sure he will find a home in some kind of mana ramp deck.

Turn 4 Koth, turn 5 kozilek, turn 6 destructive force? That seems...good. Leaves with some enormous eldrazi and Koth. And the other guy has no land. And you can bash for 4 with any remaining land you have!

There's a bunch of insane abilities right there...obviously you can never let Koth go ultimate. And you can never not have an answer when he uses his minus 2. And the plus 1 is plain annoying. People seem to be missing the point with the +1 - "oh noooes, you might loose a land!". Dude, why the heck are they going to be killing your manland rather than Koth himself - if they do that, they probably just lost the game right there? The mana acceleration is so incredible - oh, have I mentioned Kargan Dragonlord yet? - that this could potentially see Celestial Purge getting maindecked in the venser/elspeth blue-white decks. In fact he's potentially more format-warping (in standard, obviously) than Jace TMS, because although he goes into fewer decks - far fewer decks - his sheer bomb factor in those decks is off the charts. Jace TMS never won anybody the game on his own - not unless you were losing or not winning anyway. Koth can do that. I don't think he'll get banned - although paying 4 mana to get 10 mana a turn later is certainly theoretically bannable - because there is just about enough hate around already (Kor Firewalker, Celestial Purge, I suppose even Vampire Hexmage), and 2 of these answers are in a good colour. But Jesus, Wizards are certainly treading a fine line here.

@SlickDragon, I agree Jace is better. No question. But cloneeffect was saying how Koth is format changing..not better. I can't agree or disagree yet, but I can see where he's coming from. You always have to fear a topdecking red deck when your life is low...well, with Koth, "low" means around 10. I already used red in standard...and now a buttload more people will. It's hard to say how well it'll do, but...I think people may fear Koth more than Jace in standard...Jace has awesome combos, Koth kills. I still definatly fear both, but in standard alone? Koth just might pull out a win. extended and back? Jace all the way.

...and even if it turns out to be not true...keep saying it! Maybe Jace's price will go down! lol

is it just me or are planeswalkers becoming more and more broken? the first set of five was ok, not must haves in any competitive deck. Now, if you want to play at all you need spend around $100 for a maybe viable deck. That just doesn't seem fair. I'm mostly a casual player and, truth be told, I don't have tons of money to pour into this. I'm not really sure who WotC is trying to get to play the game but it sure isn't people like me.

"this card is probably the best to ask this question. how long is a turn in magic? i mean, magic is a fight between 2 planeswalkers, so is a turn an hour? a day? a minute?"

I believe they are as long as your imagination leads you to believe. If you read the books, some things 'walkers do take hours or even a full day to complete while others happen in a split second.

I would imagine that summoning creatures, laying down enchantments, crafting artifacts take time and casting some sorceries take time.

Casting instants happens in seconds or less.

Combat steps can take minutes to hours.

"Every one of his abilities is better than the next. If he gets off his -5 it is game over."

Not to be too obnoxiously picky about language, but if every one of his abilities was better than the next, that would mean that they got steadily worse. Think about a line of numbers, where each one is bigger than the next-- for example, 5>3>1. In this case, 5 is bigger than the next number, 3, which is bigger than 1. At the end, you're left with something less than you started with, because you essentially said that the first number was the best you could get.

What I think you're going for is the similar phrase "better than the last," which suggests they just get better.

You do realize that there is a turn one win in standard right now, correct? look at Chancellor of the Forge.

When will the new Koth versus Venser Duel Decks be entered into Gatherer?

Your friend sounds like a real douche. Koth is probably the most flawlessly designed planeswalker yet. He's appropriately costed (mana and loyalty), fun, unique, powerful, balanced, all while maintaining his flavor-niche perfectly. Seems like your buddy missed the memo.

Elegant design isn't something that comes easily to mono-red. This has perfect flavor, function and cost. He should be the planeswalker that truly sets the bar for what is an acceptable power level.

WORLDFIRE. Here's what you need to know. Worldfire gets
A.B.S.O.L.U.T.E.L.Y.
E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.
Except the Command Zone.

Here's what the Command Zone has:
Legendary Commanders in EDH(Haste isn't a bad plan, but remember you'll need to cast them. Your lands are gone. In EDH, it's still not a bad plan, but that's Control. Not Combo. I'm here to tell you a Combo. Poison Counters. They come from Cards. Cards are gone.

EMBLEMS. Here's a list:
Tamiyo, the Moon Sage: You H4xXOr your graveyard and your hand. Great when you're casting spells and playing lands. Not great after Super-Nuking Everything.
Elspeth, Knight-Errant: Exile isn't destroy. Your Emblem's still here, your stuff isn't.
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad: A stack of Lord effects for all your quantumly obliterated...wait. Also people's Life Totals are 1. Not necessary even for Generals.
Liliana of the Dark Realms: This will get your mana on fast track- but you still need lands AND spells to make it useful. Too slow for my purpose.
Venser, the Sojourner: Venser's Emblem + Worldfire could be the most powerful lock in the game. But a lock is still a lock, and *I* want a KEY.

Koth's Ultimate deals Damage. It deals 1 damage per trigger. Worldfire makes people's Life Totals = 1. Perfect. Koth is THE best way to bust open Worldfire. Emblems are not Exiled, and his Kills People.

In single player, all you need is to get Koth's Ultimate, Worldfire, then play a land.
Green-Red-Black with Doubling Season, Boundless Realms, and Diabolic Revelations to thin your deck and maximize topdecking your last land is a great idea.

In Multiplayer, I think I'd prefer Red-Blue-White so I can play Venser, the Sojourner and Jace, the Mind Sculptor for an excellent lock.

In Commander, I'd go all in 5 Colors so I can have Venser to Lock, Elspeth to keep my new land Indestructible, and Vraska so I can Doubling Season my 'Baby Phage' tokens. Progenitus would be my Commander because this deck isn't big on 'subtle'.

I once Koth'd into Kozilek. It was awesome.

Beyond that, Koth might go best in a Valakut deck. But he's also ridiculous in other decks. I like this art with the "calm fury" more than KVV's art.

After reading the novel, I like him much less than I did before... *Not that I liked him before*

Surprisingly difficult to remove in Legacy. He ignores Bolt; he wants to tick-up most of the time; he ignores abrupt decay; and his ability throws 4 damage at your face immediately; which is pretty intense. A 4/4 haste for 4 would be a pretty reasonable card; this guy provides that; with an ult when you're ready; while giving you the option of ramping out an Inferno Titan.

It's taken me a while to come around to him, but I have.

+1: gain 4/4 creature until end of turn, or untap mountain to add R to your pool at some point

-2: Need mana? I'll hook you up.

-5: oh, life? About that...

And he's easy on the wallet :) (for a planeswalker)
