Awesome card in Green/Red. Green supplies the mana "X", and all the rest you need is one untapped Mountain.

Can't they bring back the old Shivan Dragon? I mean, keep this too, but just for old-time's sake, bring back shivan dragon. Make it an uncommon like serra angel--who is still in print.

Bought one right when Shards came out. Just wanted to pound some faces. Really impressed me for casual games. I'm glad they reprinted it, its wrath will continue in standard for another year >:D

First cared to be printed as the foil card an intro pack twice.
Glad that they did it with a good one.

I love that this card is part of the core set now, it deserves it. I feel like it has taken the place of Shivan Dragon as red's staple fire-breathing bad-ass. Definitely one of my favorite dragons.

I love cards like these. Cards that give you an extra spell every turn if you want it. Part of the reason Planeswalkers are so powerful.

back in SOA days before conflux was out this was probably the best rare you could hope for. Repeatable effects are always great in limited and blaze is a great effect to boot. Excellent in limited and a cusual staple. GREAT STUFF!

At first glance I didn't think was a very effective card. Then I got it out. It kicks so much to the curb. Even if he's blocked, you can (by the time you have +6 mana) kill creatures or target your opponent or a planeswalker and do a lot of damage. Great in Green/Red, and I surprisingly run mine in a RUG deck. Tons of fun for a creature card. A 5/5 flier for 6 is already okay with me, then the ability just kicks it into overdrive.

This guy is sooo fun to ramp out. Bonus points for Swiftfoot Boots.
I'm confused, the card says WHEN it attacks you may pay......Is it a separate ability or is it a constant with the creature?

@Caitiebug
It's what's known as a may ability. If you declare your combat phase and then attack with this guy, you MAY tap a red and X other mana to fireball for that much either at another player, or a creature.
This is indeed a bomb. He really helped me out at FNM the other night. My opponent went from 20 to about 8 all in one fell swoop. It was all she wrote after that.

The red burn deck's creature of choice.

For me, this is one of those creatures that played out more effectively than it seemed to me to be at first view. It's one of those creatures that is going to draw attention (destruction spells) quickly.
Hm. I give it a 4 of 5 (5 reflecting perfection in a Magic card, such as Black Lotus) as a card, though it feels more devastating than that after it has successfully attacked and blasted with its flame.
I like the way this dragon's fire-breathing mechanic works, compared to Shivan Dragon's original rendition. It seems to better represent a dragon in action. Shivan is still quite classic and playable, but Flameblast Dragon is simply much better in multi-colored decks, at the very least. I also like what they did with Ancient Hellkite.

He may be the key card in the intro deck "Blood and Fire," but he's definitely worth having.

Attack along with a free Fireball. I like it a lot.
Underrated fire-breathing bada$$. Would have seen play if Titans weren't reprinted methinks.

I've used this in a Gruul deck to hit a Dralnu, Lich Lord, for 13 damage. It was glorious.

It's better than shivan dragon. You can clear blockers out of the way or get in for a LOT of damage in one turn. Typically, I like it in a deck with green. You can ramp into it. colossal might is a great, cheap pump spell that you can use AND still have plenty left for its ability. When this hits the table, your opponent needs to answer this threat or it's game over. Especially with flames of yavamaya out.

I put this in my red/green big mana EDH deck. Being able to Tooth and Nail out or Primal Command up a way to seal up a game when you have tons of mana at your disposal is really useful. It's even a Fierce Empath target. To be able to deal 10+ damage a turn or answer problem creatures is not half-bad out of an aggro deck. The biggest thing about this guy is over Mana-Charged Dragon is that, you can attack an opponent with no blockers and blaze the player who poses the largest threat, saving your finisher from combat.

This is interesting. an ability akin to an indirect fire breathing. This may be better than fire breathing because of it's indirectness, you could just attack into chump blockers and still deal damage directly to the opponent's face, or take care of that annoying deathtouch creature before it bothers you. Too bad it isn't divisable.

Yeah this is a strong dragon. If it ever untaps something important is getting nuked, either their face or their blocker. Oh yeah then they still have to deal with your 5/5 attacking dragon.
Balefire Dragon may drop a bigger bomb but this is far more reliable, since it has a way of removing its own potential blockers where as balefire needs your help to do so.
