Another bullet hewn for faries. It'll be good until it (hopefully) kills them.

Ineffable? This card is very effable.

Stags have a huge presence in fantasy literature. Okay, huge is an over-statement, but they are rich with historical symbolism. Especially "Great Stags." Look this stuff up. It's actually pretty cool.

He's pretty meh, actually. It's just a 3/3, for crying out loud. Yeah, blue may have problems with him, but blue is so crappy right now that it has problems with everything.

It's an ok card. The fact that it's a deer makes it very blah. It needs to be a fantasy creature that you'd like to catch or see, like a dryad, rather than something you'd like to catch and cook for dinner.

Edit: Zevilmustache, even if stags have historical symbolism or presences in fantasy literature, they're still boring, simply because they're real. Escaping reality is what fantasies are all about, and a deer that a lot of people wanna hunt isn't so far placed from reality that it merits being awesome in a fantasy setting.

Soldiers are real, swords are real, bears are real, land is real. Better get rid of all those too! Stags are perfectly acceptable as fantasy creatures.

I hate this card... I am a faerie player and this card kills faeries and round 2 and 3 unless you have scion and mutavault at the same time..... only counter for it.

Noob question.

I'm unsure as to what it means by "Can't be countered"
Is this like it cant be blocked or can't have destroy cards played on it or what?
SocialExperiment
★★★★☆ (4.3/5.0) (5 votes)
Furinic: "Can't be countered" means you can't use a counterspell (like Cancel or Soul Manipulation) to stop me from playing Great Sable Stag. You can still kill it once it's on the field, but you can't use a Blue or Black card (since it has protection from them). If you need more information on how abilities work, I would make a list of things you aren't sure about and ask them on the MTG forums, you'll have an answer in no time.

this is a pretty awesome card

1gg for a 3 power creature is alright... but with those extra powers? against most blue or black decks, itd be pretty hard to chump

This is very much fantasy to me, it reminds me of Princess Mononoke. And it's a good card, too.

I love the flavor on this. I support green getting animals from the real world as creatures, perhaps animals with a dash of supernatural power.

Real does not equal boring. Sometimes, ordinary things with unexpected powers are the most exciting and fantastical of all. Excuse me if I don't want to be summoning 'fantasy' creatures that are completely random and look like Pokemon.

solid creature, 3/3 for 3. the double green is a very slight drawback, considering its abilities. impervious to targeted destruction spells, as well as bounce/other nonsense blue can do to it, serious advantage. making a player waste a path to exile or some such card on this creature is an advantage in the long run. only real downside I can see is its vulnerability to cheap burn. I think there is a one mana instant out there that could easily burn this stag to the ground... oh right, lightning bolt. Not bad though, certainly a SB card, wouldn't recommend 4 maindeck, but a few, sure.

Wow. Blue and black didn't get nerfed enough?
This is like a giant middle finger to control. Not much is gonna hit it.
And the casting cost? Jeez, Oversoul of Dusk was appropriately difficult to cast. This is.... stupid.

Agree with the point made about it being a good card and those made defending it's flavourful elements. I'm actually impressed they reached a little into Herculean myth. Bravo.

Fae needed a little nerfing. Mind you, the comment that control will suffer is not too inaccurate- blue doesn't have an answer to this at all, save, perhaps, Evacuation-like effects. Blacks a little more fortunate with Damnation and forced sacrifice- though I can't recall much of any of this in current standard. Black could....double-Infest, maybe? Cruel Edict? Is that still around?

Oh well. Control is five-colour for now anyway, so this is sideboard material until blue control makes a comeback. And it will, no doubt.

A 3/3 for 1GG is solid. A 3/3 that cannot be countered and has blue and black hate for 1GG is ridiculous. Faeries have got nothing on this guy. Too bad he can't fly, though. And I kinda wish he could survive Lightning Bolt. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, I guess. Overall, he's a REALLY good creature

I prefer Isamaru. This card is great for EDH. The can't be countered thing obviously means it can't be played on a counter or put counters of any type on it.

I wonder how long till "can't be countered" gets a keyword? I'm guessing a year or two from now we'll be seeing Great Sable Stag with protection from blue, protection from black, and "Alwaysresolve." That would be a cool keyword. :P

This card has won me game after game vs. blue and black decks. Power up the stag with some extra abilities and it's over pretty quickly. He sure is a target for lightning bolts though...

Amazing card in both maindeck and side-deck. Green's Paladin en-Vec for sure. Reminds me of what people thought Mirri, Cat Warrior was when she came out back in Exodus alongside the Paladin. Its basically Scragnoth, but much better as it costs 1 less and sacrifices the 1 toughness (small sacrifice) for Pro. Black (huge boon). Very hard to get rid of.

Amazing with cards like Mark of Asylum as it eliminates nearly every form of non-white removal your opponent can play against you.

The lack of supported creature type, double green and worthlessness against anything but a black or blue player ensures he will only find places in very specific metas or in decks that are EXTREMELY weak against UB.

It's probably the best UB hate out there right now. I run a UB mill deck that can barely answer this. At best I'd need two Marsh Casualties with kicker. Of course, that's why I SB Gatekeeper of Malikir ;)

For once have no bad thing to say on the con side of a card, this is legitimally pretty much a 100% pro. It's true if your facing red it can still be lightning bolted, but for a green card that's only 3 mana, it's just wow. Uncounterable and protection blue and black dodges a lot of removal, and since its not huge or carrying a gigantic mana cost your not tearing your hair out if it does somehow die. Could see it being a real terror in a simple green white deck with a behemoth sledge in it, making a 3 mana 3/3 into a 5/5 trample lifelink uncounterable protection blue and black. Besides if your playing it in green you can use bant colors, for bant charm to counter those lightning bolts.

This is just obnoxious. How in the hell is a Blue or Black deck supposed to deal with this? Unless you happen to be packing a colorless artifact creature with three power (how many of those are around and worth playing) this usually means GG on turn three.

An excellent card on its own merits, but really ridiculous in most match-ups.

Umm... Chill the *** out? Sorry if he doesn't like your card, don't go into a nerd-rage and somehow call him a dork. And not that I can say for certain, you probably don't hunt either.
Also, cammel-casing when spaces aren't available = ok
Cammel-casing w/ spaces = annoying
I love this thing, your clearly it's lover, and he doesn't like it.

Altogether :
Magic elk are tough to deal with and nerd rages are unnecessary

Phah! Blue's got three easy answers already at the spell stage: Ertai's Trickery, Time Stop and Mindbreak Trap.

And Black, needless to say, has a plethora of options for getting rid of this "doe'fuss" long before it even reaches their opponent's hand.

Long live Blue or Black!

Great card. But the good news, verse any other colors its just a Trained Armodon. Definitely maindeck worthy, because its so good against BlueBlack, and a 3/3 for 3 is still playable.
Lord_of_Tresserhorn
★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (2 votes)
@Tiggurix: You mean Ertai's Meddling. Ertai's Trickery is just a narrow nigh-useless counterspell against kicked cards.

Anyway, that's three cards in the entire game. Not THAT easy an answer...
