I figured this card was about as good as the sky ruin, if it is, this would be awesome, there are ways to make it work, toss in green for excel for example, harrow and the expidition are great for this and the white one, and someone will figure out how to abuse it, just give it some time
PeterRabit
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Only way I can think to abuse it is by turn 5 having used a harrow to get rid of a forest, bringing you up to 5 mountains, having 4 expeditions in play with 3 counters already and playing your valakut, sacrificing all of your expeditions and getting 8 mountains in play dealing 24 damage... lol

I can think of a way to abuse this... using Fastbond and Meloku. XP
Ok, so that's ridiculous.
How would this work with Realm Razer? (add a Blood Moon so all those lands are mountains.) Obviously not a functional combo, just curious how it'd work.

Blood Moon wouldn't work because Valakut itself would become a normal Mountain. Realm Razor would destroy face.

Someone just used Scapeshift and searched for 6 mountains, besides Valakut. As they entered play, he said that i just lost, and that every mountain triggers to others simultaneously, and so i took 18 damage. Is this legal? This part of the oracle is rather on my side:
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle's triggered ability has an "intervening 'if' clause." That means (1) the ability won't trigger at all unless, at the time a Mountain enters the battlefield under your control, you control five or more Mountains other than that new one, and (2) the ability will do nothing if you control fewer than five Mountains other than that new one by the time it resolves.
But, then this part makes me wonder if that was legal:
If multiple Mountains enter the battlefield under your control at the same time, Valakut's second ability could trigger that many times. Each ability takes into consideration the other Mountains that entered the battlefield at the same time as the one that caused it to trigger.
As i read it i tend to confirm that what they guy was just plain bullsht, as the oracle says 'the hability won't trigger AT ALL unless at the time the mountain enters the battlefield you control 5 or more mountains'.
As the hability triggers, he has no mountains at all, so what do you think?

I think that this land was only created to make Manabarbs even more useful. I'd play Terramorphic Expanses but hold on to them like ticking time bombs.

If you changed the wording of this card to say Swamp instead of Mountain with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in play, things could get crazy ugly fast.

@BelloAbril
Your opponent had it correct, when you use Scapeshift all the mountains enter the battlefield at the same time and then the Valakut triggers. since Valakut triggers whenever a mountain comes into play it triggers for each mountain and when valakut checks to see if there are enough mountains in play it sees all six each time it checks doing a total of 18 damage.
Ben Stark was the first person to really play this combo, he played it at Worlds in Rome. It works.
Ratoly
★★★☆☆ (3.2/5.0)(4 votes)
@BelloAbril: That combo works. The lands enter play simultaneously for Scapeshift, meaning that as they enter all at once, Valakut sets up a trigger for each since the 6+ mountains enter simultaneously so when Valakut checks, there are in fact 5 other mountains for each. Once Scapeshift resolves, Valakut's triggers all check to see if there are still 5 other mountains for each, if there are, Valakut deals 3 to a target for each trigger that successfully resolved.

Even if you're not making a valakut deck, this still seems like an alright card to put into a mono red deck. It turns your topdecked lands into lightning bolts. You don't want too many of these though because it comes into play tapped, which sucks if this is in your starting hand. So maybe like 1-2.

★☆☆☆☆ (1.2/5.0)(3 votes)
Terrible for red burn, since your opponent is either dead by the time it would be useful, or your deck locked you down completely and Valakut wouldn't make much of a difference anyway.
On the other hand, it rocks in combos I've seen Red/Green decks destroy with Valakut in Standard, and in Extended...

Harrow/Khalni heart/rampant growth/fetch lands and expedition maps get this combo really rocking. plus all the mana accel allows you a land advantage.
You can easily turn 2 khalni heart, play a land turn 3, play harrow, and gain 3 lands at the cost of 1. Cascade from bloodbraids will (if you are lucky) roll into a harrow or rampant growth, or a lightning bolt. Rock excellent burns like Lightning bolt, searing blaze, comet storm (the ramp really works nice with that).
4 Siege gangs of course, lots of blocking/burn power. This deck works really well.

I always figured that if you got multiples of a card like that, it either got more powerful or you just formed a mana bond with the other side of the mountain...for example, flavor wise, if I have two Howling Mines, I just figure in my mind that I just discovered more treasure in the first one
BTW, if you have four mountaains and put two mountains into play at the same time, they bot trigger for 3 damage each. They both enter play at the same time, therefore see eachother and trigger. Don't believe me, just hit up MTGO, I play a Valakut deck on there.

As to why its not legendary... I do not understand their reasoning on lands being legendary or not. Many lands seem to indicate one, unique place that does not have any others, yet it is not legendary. Other lands that indicate a unique place are. Nonetheless, I really think this should have been legendary because multiples of it are a nightmare.

Way to many lands required for it to be usable imo. In my red aggro deck I almost always win/lose the game with less then 5 mountains in play.
Maybe if you played a very defensive mono-red deck using this, Hellfire mongrel, Obsidian Firehearth and several Wall of Fire to slowly whittle down your opponents health that it could work.

I think Primeval Titan has the market cornered on the proper way to enable valakut based strategies.
Oddly enough, this card doesn't really work in mono-red, since mono red generally doesn't want to get to the sixth land. Not that it isnt a 1-2 of in mono red, its just sub-optimal.

This card is the bomb. You build around it, you don't put it into a random red deck. Cultivate, harrow, expedition Map, firggin Primeval titan, throw in Koth as a fail safe and your ready to friggin roll. This card is a bomb and anyone who says differently isn't quuite using it right. Theoretically, You can make a kickass valakut deck for relatively cheap. Drop the titans and it aint bad. Of course the titans and koth make it uber and theyre like 50 bucks a piece.. so its like 20 or so bucks for a good valakut deck, 250 for a damn good one haha 4.5/5 only because it ISNT good in most decks outside of itself.

I know some people were surprised not to find this card in FtV:R, and get Grove of the Burnwillows as one of the red lands instead. Keep in mind FtV:R was released in August and they announced Valakut would be unbanned in September. Wizards is constantly trying to build on Modern (rightfully so, in my opinion), and even the date of this post there is a Modern tournament. So rather than reprint a card banned in Modern they reprinted a staple for UrzaTron decks (from Modern). I don't think it's too much of an issue.
