Seems it would work with Guile. 7 merfolk is a lot to get into play, but it is a soft-lock once you have it.

Nighthawk42: No, this will not synergize with Guile. When Guile is on the field, it's actually literally impossible to counter anything; Guile's triggered ability replaces countering with exiling the card and then letting you play it for free if you want, and so, Lullmage Mentor's ability will actually never trigger while you control Guile.

This guy is cool with followed footsteps for a casual combo. Gets crazy if you have more. Seems like Zendikar scales in very fun ways.

I'm sorry Lullmage Mentor, counterspell is just about dead, all your synergy merfolk from lorwyn are gone, and the entire color of blue is completely crippled. You have two options, sit in a box of unused cards and cry, or play in extended.

How would this card work with Grimoire Thief? Would the ability trigger once for each spell the Thief counters or only once, period?

this is an interesting card, atm there are not many merfolk in standard, so this card is better in extended, casual, and legacy, unless they print a lot more in the rest of the block
that said, you can make this an awesome card, a rites of replication, (even unkicked), will allow for more hurt in counters, so turn 8, you have used most of your counter spells, drop this, next turn, rites it, kicked, now, when you counter their spell on their turn, that also gives you 6 merfolk, add 1 more of these guys and you have the 7 to counter another spell, it can quickly become that they cant lay anything and you have come back to form an army of merfolk

@Dingo, i agree as well. it is an interesting card if you can get some of them on the field early on. if you already have 4 lullmage mentors out on the field, if you counter one spell, you have enough Merfolk to counter another spell in the same turn (the four tokens, and the four lullmages).
Definately a card that has inspired me to create a mono merfolk deck.

Once you get 7 Merfolk out and an Intruder Alarm, you can counter an unlimited number of spells only with your merfolks. You tap seven of them to counter the spell, the Intruder Alarm triggers when you put another token in play and untaps all creatures. This could be the most idiotic way to counter Storm. I can see some weird synergy when Lullmage Mentor is combined with Eldrazi Monument from the same set and Dovescape. Your oppenent will have a ton of 1/1 flying birds, but you will have an army of 2/2 indestructible flying merfolk. I should try thinking of some other combo.

I want to know what this card does when you play Swift Silence with a healthy pile of spells on the stack. How many merfolk do you get, just one, or one per spell countered?

Both like, yet dislike how this card works, seeing as you have to ring up 7 merfolk to use the ability that actually counts (the tapping seven merfolk to counter any spell), the other ability is nice, but wont even function unless you have a counter spell to use, and multiples of them. It's still possible to get the use of it, and I can certainly see control and merfolk decks having fun building around it, but it's not going to fit in other types of decks.

This guy is good completely on its own. It makes each of your counter spells read, "Counter target spell. Put a 1/1 blue merfolk token into play," effetively making each of your counterspells two-for-ones. Now you can chumps with your new 1/1, or they are threats your opponent has to deal with. And if you counter six spells, your opponent is definitely in trouble.

Awesome card. being able to counter a spell by tapping seven creatures is strong, even if they are restricted to Merfolk. It would take a while to build up the merfolk, since you would need alot fo counter spells and have Lullmage Mentor in play for a while, but if it can be use, I see it being strong.

@clefaria; what he meant was, apparently, that if you have seven merfolk, its good to have guile to do something with the spell you are countering.

Not many Merfolk token generators, this is the only one which makes straight Merfolk tokens, not Merfolk Wizard tokens. Come on, WotC, make more Merfolk token generators, and finally give us a use for all those millions of Merfolk of the Pearl Trident cards you printed.

It's unlikely that you're going to get seven Merfolk on the board in Standard (even with an aggressive curve starting with Cosi's Trickster and Enclave Cryptologist), but if you drop Mentor on turn five with Mana Leak or Deprive backup, you'll get a token. Maybe that token chump-blocks, maybe it gets bigger thanks to Coralhelm Commander and Merfolk Sovereign. Who can say? This fishwizard's okay in my books.
ummm... I just think it's amazing that he gives you a bonus for countering spells... The fact that the bonus is a 1/1 merfolk tolken is... amazing? Combine that with the two merfolk lords we have in standard right now and, well i'm just surpised I haven't seen a tier one deck with him... 1/1 tolkens for doing what control does best seems awesome

When I saw this, the first thing I saw was this in a Myr deck with lots of tokens (Master's Call, Myr Turbine, etc.) with Xenograft. Once you got enough merfolk/myr, you could leave them open to counter spells oruse the turbine's second ability!

I wish it made Merfolk Wizard tokens, just for Patron Wizard....
- Play cheap instant (one cost, doesn't matter WHAT it is) - Remand it with an Isochron Scepter - Untap the scepter with a Voltaic Key - Repeat for as much mana (and/or voltaic keys) as you possess
Do this on your opponent's end step as a mana sink for any mana left over. Nets you a card and a token per iteration.

As far as I'm concerned this guy is proof that WotC designs cards purely for casual, legacy, and modern builders. In block and Standard this guy doesn't have enough support to warrant his rarity, however, Lorwyn totally makes this guy for the lullz. Stonybrook Schoolmaster, Judge of the Currents, and Summon the School are where this guy gets his lullz.
I saw someone else mention that they wish his cost was only UU instead of 1UU, throw in a Stonybrook Banneret and he does only cost UU!

Seven Lullmage Mentors, due to Clones or Rite of Replication, and you win the game forever.
Brutal, just brutal. A playset for any merfolk deck that even considers control options. Merrow Commerce will guarantee that this option is always open during your opponent's turn.
I wish Infinite Reflection worked with tokens, because then you could enchant this guy and make a geometrically-increasing number of copies every time you counter something. Oh well.

I use him with Judge of Currents and Stonybrook Schoolmaster in my modern merfolk deck. I get seven life and at least two tokens if I have those two out when I counter.

Combine this guy with Talrand, Sky Summoner to get both a Merfolk Wizard AND a Drake token from your counterspells. Imagine a mono-blue counterspell/token deck with those guys at the core! Sounds pretty fun, right?
Also, I'm sad that the tokens he makes aren't "Merfolk Wizard" tokens, like with all the other Merfolk token producers. =( If that were the case, this guy would have been absolutely PERFECT in a Wizard deck, with Patron Wizard and Voidmage Prodigy!
