he's a sweet addition to a shard convergence deck, and is a shoe in with said card. he can dish out some major punishment

A meh mythic rare. By the time you actually get to play him, you won't have much of a hand, unless you're running some heavy card draw, so he kinda lacks in the tricks department, though a 6/6 flyer for 6 isn't too bad.

I enjoy this card, especially in multiplayer. I combine Malfegor with all sorts of stuff: Reliquary Tower to maximize discard potential, Font of Mythos to accelerate hand size easily ahead of your opponents' maximum number of creatures they may have in play at the time.

Now use aforementioned combos with certain creature that benefit from the resulting genocide, like I use Deathbringer Thoctar, Thraximundar, and Mortivore as damaging potential after using Malfegor's effect.

My favorite legendary card...a demon dragon really deserve to be this powerful...jst back up with some card draws and Reliquary Towers and discard army and ul be unstoppable... oh i forgot...it can kill Progenitus too...not actually kill but to jst neutralize it coz it jst bounces back to the deck...the brother of Rakdos the Defiler, wen they get into the battlefield, everything is in chaos, oh how i love it...

An amazingly enjoyable card to play; I love to watch the opponents entire board disappear before my eyes. Although the art work for the pre-release version is far better (and more shiny).

I use Malfegor in a blue red black reanimator deck, and with an ancestral vision suspended, this card is just insane. And by the way, I made a friend of mine sacrifice is Akroma with him, it's too cool to have a red-black card deal with Akroma!

I might be missing something, but he looks like a (potential) Day of Judgement that gives you a 6/6 flier in exchange for sacrificing your hand. The only thing it may have over DoJ is that it can get indestructible creatures, but then, so can the 3 drop (2 + kicker) Gatekeeper of Malakir.

However, that 6/6 flier dies very easily to Celestial Purge, Terminate, Path to Exile, and some others with the right setup (ie. Dark Temper, Wretched Banquet).

However, if you were to first use some sort of hand discard (given that you need red and black, Mind Shatter looks like the way to go, or some Blightnings leading up to his cast) you'd then clear the board with him (potentially), and have a 6/6 flier with your opponent free of spot removal as they have almost no hand. It has potential, but only in the same way a lot of strong creatures have potential when there's no spot removal around.

Rakdos and Malfegor are brothers. Rakdos got all the extra squashing abilities and flavor text, while Malfegor got the awesome CIP ability.

Lol with BANESLAYER ANGEL out there it seems like it's best to run Everlasting Torment with him lol, other wise when ATTACKING with him, he'll just get blocked while their life goes up, but this way baneslayer will be slain without possibility of life gain! XD ... And he'll be reduced to a 1/1 but whatever lol... Ends justify the means.

@ SavageBrain89 (7/9/2009 6:03:53 PM)

I have to agree! The pre-release version was the best one XD
But then again the pre-release image USUALLY seems to be the cooler looking card :D

@JaxsonBateman (11/12/2009 4:33:30 AM)

Yes, but note Doom Blade and Terror which are some of the common removal to see wont work on him since he's a black creature, so he's got in a sense some removal protection lol :P

nice in a rakdos deck, since rakdos decks actually reward you for having 0 cards in hand.

even without the rakdos deck its still a pretty nice card

@sethddickness: How is a 6/6 flying for 2RRBB a waste? With enough cards in hand, he decimates your opponents, especially in multiplayer. Playing him on turn 6 is usually a win, playing him on turn 4 with Dark Ritual is definitely a win.

@metaevolence I agree discarding your hand usually ain't great at the best of times. However, great in any deck where you draw cards faster than you know what to do with as you can usually keep back a few unneeeded cards. Plus it can remove ANY creature no matter how shrouded or indestructable and thats the beauty of this card. M@ssive creature removal of the highest quality. I love this card.

I run this guy in my "Remnants of Kamigawa" Ogre/Demon deck. Generally I keep back two or three cards as soon as I draw this guy, cast, and attack for the win the turn he comes out. Shame I didn't put any lightning greaves in the deck...

Malfegor KILLS Baneslayer, in the most ironic kill move ever. He is mostly a one-sided board wipe in trade for your hand, along with a 6/6 flyer, who will hit a few times before they recover a field position. Did I mention that he kills Baneslayer?

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (7 votes)
@Jay13x: You do NOT want to play this guy on turn 4 with a Dark Ritual. You wait until your opponent's number of creatures is high enough and the number of cards in your hand (minus Malfegor himself) is low enough for the two to be equal, THEN you cast him. Even turn 6 is probably too early in most cases.

On the other hand, if you have Chandra Ablaze out you can easily discard down to the desired number of cards with her Flame Javelin ability.

I love this card, I managed to get a shiny promo. My usual victims dislike this card to a high degree. One has threatened that they are making a blue deck and wish to Clone Malfegor. I must ask, anyone know if the discard ability works if it's cloned?

nobody seems to recognize that "discard your hand" is about the hugest drawback anything has ever had besides outright losing. Against any kind of controlling strategy Malfegor is a good way to completely *** yourself.

That said, he's pretty awesome.

There are two kinds of Magic players: those who look at Malfegor and say "Discard my hand? No, thanks!" and those who look at him and say "Each opponent sacrifices a creature for each card discarded this way? That's savage, man!"

I fall in the latter category. That's why he's currently my favorite EDH general.

The tech with him is Library of Leng. You can put that Rage Reflection on top of your deck for next turn, and your opponents still have to sacrifice creatures for it. Anthem of Rakdos is also sweet. 16 (or more) general damage per attack? That's pretty favorable.

This card saved my butt once. I was playing against a blue deck.. my opponent used traumatize and it just so happens that my best cards were lost... then he made me discard my hand (forgot the card he used), theeeen he pulled out Stormtide Leviathan and half a dozen other assorted creatures. I had 4 life left and the card I pulled was mr. demon dragon here. Surprise! I won that game.

His name is not "Malfegor the Demon Dragon", it is simply "MALFEGOR"
a name that sounds simply powerful
your opponent will pull a "Wait...what?" everytime

R&D guy 1: "Hey guys, so, you know how Rakdos the Defiler was demon tribal in a set without demon tribal?"
R&D guy 2:"uh... yeah"
R&D guy 1:"Well it's a little too late, but I think we should make a replacement guild leader, ya'know, with self discard effects?"
R&D guy 2:"Yeah. Let's make him a dragon too."
Stoner in corner: "Coooool"

Also, I kind of prefer Malfegor's look to Rakdos's bull head. I love how the flavor text mentions how awesome his creature types are. He's no dragon wizard, but still.

I'm loving this guy as my commander. The way he sits in the command zone waiting to demolish any opposing creatures is very intimidating and flavoursome. If I have a slow start he is great at pulling things back.
If only there was a way to solve the loss of all my hand... a way that still followed my dragon theme.... If only red had some card-draw creatures, something like a wizard that's also a dragon. They could call it Dragon Mage or something...

My favorite play with Malfegor so far has been recasting him in a multiplayer game after my first copy got slapped with Faith's Fetters, wiping the board for a second time in the process.

The funny thing is Malfegor doesn't worl that well in a Hellbent deck, besides a few creatures like Rakdos Pit Dragon. Hellbent wants you to burn through your hand as soon as possible, while Malf wants you to have cards in hand until turn 6.
He's still one of my favourite EDH generals. Play him the turn after a Bloodgift Demon or Harvester of Souls, with a Blood Speaker for shenanigans (when Malf ETB with Speaker on your grave, you may resolve Speaker's trigger first and get an extra sacrifice).

Even without the bit that makes enemies sacrifice, he's {2}{B}{R}{R} for a 6/6 flier with a One with Nothing stapled to him! =D

Malfegor just screams to be put in a reanimator deck. Just think, a hand full of high cost creatures and a suspended Ancestral Visions or Font of Mythos out. Play him, kill the everyone's field then next turn draw a few Animate Deads and bring back your hand. I love this card. He is the nuclear bomb in my demon reanimator deck. It turns his big drawback into huge grave advantage.

I feel a lot of player are forgetting about reanimator decks. You usually want to get rid of anything you have in your hand and this card is one of the best packages for that.
You get a 6/6 flying, you get to put your creatures in the grave and your opponent just sacked their own defenses. And NOT just one player but ALL OPPONENTS.

These card seems to be fairly underrated, i give it a 4-4.5.

My friend had a creature that had indestructibility, shroud, and pro from some combination of colors on the field and boasted that there was no way I was killing it. Despite it being a terrible move and costing me the game, I cast Malfegor just to throw that boast right back in his face. It felt good. Damn white cards.

Baneslayer Angel- Pro Demons and Dragons
Malfegor- Demon Dragon: only creature in the history of magic that is both of Baneslayer's protections. Can kill Baneslayer.
